BuddyPress is a plugin FOR WordPress MU. Your question is, what does a WP plugin need to do to work in WPMU? The biggest differences I am aware of is that WPMU plugins don’t utilise the activation/deactivation functions that WP plugins do.
I suspect if you search the WPMU site or message board, someone will have asked this question before.
I’m just not sure what I even need to be looking for.

Gladsteins, there won’t be a /members directory in your structure.
Within your /bp-themes/ directory are there themes in there? Namely bpmember? If your /bp-themes/ directory is empty, then nothing will show up in your settings screen.

Okay, thanks for the updated information. From those error messages, it appears that PHP is having trouble saving session information. This will cause big issues. However, this is not a BuddyPress nor WordPress-specific issue. This is an issue with your web server.
I suggest that you contact your web hosting firm and ask them to help you.

I’m also getting 404 errors on the links to anything members/groups/etc. BUT my WordPress installation worked fine (with some users that I believe were imported from our other test system) before installing BP. We didn’t import any blogs, themes or plugins from our other install — just some user accounts.
I am looking at moving from Xoops to Buddypress. My major concern is converting the forum CBB to bbpress. I have a mediawiki integration which can be stand alone and a group blog that is wordpress based so that should not be an issue. It is the forum that is holding me back. Any suggestions or experience on this would be appreciated.

Adding to what jjj and TheEasyButton are saying, if you are still having issues then it is important to start from scratch. You must get WPMU functioning properly before installing BuddyPress. Then make sure BuddyPress is functioning properly before installing and integrating bbPress.
From what you are saying, it is not clear if you are upgrading WPMU from 2.6 or 2.7? Did you already have a working copy of WPMU installed? If so, what version?
If you are upgrading from 2.7 to 2.7.1 following these upgrading instructions, then make sure you finish the upgrading process by logging into WPMU’s backend as site admin and going to “Site Admin -> Upgrade”. Also, make sure you use the wp-config-sample.php file that comes with WPMU 2.7.1 and modify that version as needed. Do not use an older version of the wp-config.php file.
If you do not have an active site with real members and you are only in testing mode, then you can safely delete everything and perform a clean install. This means that you do not have any data in the MySQL DB that is worth saving.
If that is the case,save to a separate file any custom themes you may have created or installed. Also, save any 3rd-party plugins you may have installed for WPMU. Then, start from scratch. Delete everything including your MySQL DB. Once you have reinstalled WPMU succesfully, you can copy back your custom themes and 3rd-party plugins into their proper locations.
Finally, if you are still using BP RC2, it is time to switch to BuddyPress 1.0, the public release version of BP.

I bought the themes from StudioPress and see they have made a Grunge Buddypress theme for another client. I will try and contract them to do the same for myself.
Unfortunately since we will be using a purchased theme, I would not be able to make it open to everyone, however I will ask StudioPress to consider adding it to their product list for sale.
I will also look at the coding myself as I am generally good with be able to follow systems that are well documented. If this is the case I will look into creating themes using free/gpl wordpress themes. What my clients have been after is more of a wordpress modular feel than buddypress.
I am also looking into integrating phpMotion and will report back to this forum as my clients all want locally hosted/owned video/images site wide and on user profiles.

wpmu doesn’t have the option you are looking for. But you can use 2nd option with a plugin to moderate new blogs. To find out more, visit wpmu forums and wpmudev.
This has nothing to do with BuddyPress. 
All or most of wordpress plugins DO WORK on wpmu under /plugins/ folder. But for the case of /mu-plugins/ folder, you should only use the plugins that supports wpmu in general.

John, thanks for trying to help, I didn’t upgrade buddy press, well I did, but then just started from scratch with fresh install of wordpressmu 2.7.1 and installed buddypress and then installed theme, upgraded theme by modifying all the files directed to.
WordPress and bbPress use several cookies to ensure your identity across all directories and areas that are important to the applications. When those cookies are out of alignment, things start working strangely like you describe.
The best thing is to check the cookies that your site is dropping, review the information inside them (typically with Firefox) and see if there are any places that are obviously incorrect or pointing to the wrong locations. Then, you use those global variables to adjust the settings back into place.
This is one of those bugs that’s difficult to diagnose, difficult to direct you to a fix, and hard to explain where to even start.
It’s also PIVOTAL that all of your separate applications (WPMU, BP, bbP) are all correctly installed/upgraded to begin with. If you’ve never gotten to a point where they were playing nice together in the first place, it will be extremely hard to figure out what’s wrong.
The documentation/codex area provides a ton of documentation that can help you with all of these things, but there is no magic button you can press to make this happen.
There are dozens of functions and loops that need to be installed and addressed on several files and themes to make all of BuddyPress work the way it does. All we can do is document them for you, and let you give it a try yourself. It’s up to the growing audience of BP developers to start creating themes for 1.0, and that will eventually happen, I guarantee it.
If you’re in over your head and desperate for a theme asap, it may be time to hire someone to help you out. If you’re not looking for custom functionality and simply want a revamped BP theme, I might suggest joining the WordPress developers mailing lists and asking some WP professionals for assistance. Otherwise right now we’re pretty lenient about users asking for specific requests here (meaning we will lock the topic but we won’t delete it or spam it.)

I have bought some great premium wordpress themes and I want to upgrade one to use for Buddypress 1.0 post RC2 release. I can use the skeleton for the members profile.
What I need are the hooks to turn a wordpress theme into a Buddypress theme.
I think this was available for RC1 but with the changes to RC2+ we will need the updated hooks.
I have searched for this but can’t seem to find it.
Any suggestions.

I added the template tag ‘per_page’ inside of bp_has_posts() in recent-posts.php which changes the number of recent posts displayed on the page, but it does not add the “next posts’ / ‘previous posts’ on the page. I added the navigation class from index.php right after end while…..

There are a few multi-database WPMU plugins out there that help scale a website exactly like you’re talking about. I think the one that most people use is called HyperDB but I have no first hand experience with it. From what I understand, it’s also what wordpress.com uses to spread things around.
A few users here have some solid knowledge of this, and hopefully they’ll chime in to give you some more specific suggestions.
This is a cookie integration issue with bbPress. You should be using bbPress 1.0 Alpha 6 for the easiest login integration.
Basically WordPress isn’t dropping the bbPress admin cookie. You need the integration plugin for WordPress to drop those cookies, if I remember correctly.

Just a quick question. I want to have a section on my site using a contact form that sends information to my email address. At the moment, I have it set up just using Contact Form 7 plugin for WordPress. The problem is that this contact form requires the user to enter their name / email address etc and then send the form. Is there any way that I can just have a text area for contact text, and then the email is sent using the information of the person that is logged in?
Simply, when a user is logged in, they can type a title of their question, and then the text. I then receive an email saying, “User1 (email address) has asked a question!”.

Getting each one to have their own *separate* BP is the issue.
Why not just stick with the one install, have each troop make their own ground and their own blog? This way they have theor own sace, but can still interact with the entire site at large.
