Here’s the challenge I’m facing.
I’ve been trying to figure out how to use group IDs instead of group titles when creating groups. I know I can change it anytime via phpmyadmin, but in this case I’m looking for php functions that control how groups are named.
This is because when group title contains Japanese, sometimes the permalink gets too long which exceeds wordpress’s capability and links don’t work.
I’m hoping to extend this to bp-events plugin, as it creates each events from titles. I just simply want to use group/events IDs than titles.

You can install the same old standard WordPress theme if you’d like, but keep in mind that it won\’t have any functions that tap into BuddyPress at all. Yes they will work, exactly like they did before.
You upload and install them in the same place you’re used to, wp-content/themes/
Then they must be activated in the Site Admin->Themes area.
(Hope you don’t mind, I renamed your topic title so it doesn’t confuse “Member Themes” with “Themes for Members” haha!)
With the BuddyPress RC-2 now using WordPress MU 2.7.1, we’ve found that the BuddyPress Home theme shows a white screen when previewing. Themes can still be activated, they just cannot be previewed.
This appears to be an issue with WordPress MU 2.7.1 disagreeing with the hyphen “-” in the directory name of the theme. Ticket number 965 has been opened on the WPMU Trac to alert their team to this issue.
In the meantime, for those of you looking for a temporary solution, simply rename the directory “buddypress-home” to “buddypress_home” and you’re theme preview will work as per normal.

I have BuddyPress RC2/WordPRessMU 2.7.1 installed and everything seems to work just fine so far.
I was just wondering what folder I should install any new themes in so that new members who wish to create a blog can choose from a variety of different themes.
Also, is it safe to use standard WordPress themes?.

I’m using WordPressMU 2.7.1 and all of the RC2 BuddyPress plugins. Everything is set up and working just fine (even the FB-Connect plugin) except for the fact that in IE 7 the FB avatar and the text in the light-yellow box that contains the name and reads “Registered 2 days, 4 hours ago” is out of alignment on the front page (under the default grey “Members” bar).

Incidentally, I noticed that their BuddyPress tutorial is out of date. They have not been keeping up with the changes in theme directories. Also, they state that:
As an addon to the official WordPress MU, BuddyPress is fully compatible with all the plugins and themes of WordPress and does not limit its functionality in any way
This is not true. There are several incorrect statements there. For instance, there are a number of steps that must be taken if you are using a custom WordPress theme with BuddyPress. I hope they’re good at tech support!
Yea i played around with it and got my users from my regular wordpress install into mu/bp and although it showed the users in admin the buddypress never showed them.
This could mean several things. You have an existing WP site and want to get those users into WPMU.
Or you have an existing WPMU site, but when you go the ‘members’ list pages on BuddyPress, most of them don’t appear.
I can’t help you with the first one as I don’t know and that question is more appropiate to the WPMU forums (not BuddyPress’). If it’s the second, the users won’t show up until they’ve logged in and done something. There was a script or so around the forums to get this done automatically, but I don’t know where I saw it. Hopefully someone will post.
Is there a way to import users to buddypress from a wordpress install?
That is not a BuddyPress problem. I suggest you search WordPress’ forums.
On the previous BuddyPress and WordPress 2.7 in the Admin backend there was a place where you could see all of the member blogs and I don\’t see anything for member blogs anymore. SO does Admin have to go into each blog from the front end if they need to help a member?
Also there was a way to set what templates were available to the different members and you had to activate templates. Is this gone? If so how do you limit the templates to the members??
This was all in the Options menu which is gone now.

I was running WordPress MU 2.7 before and have been manually upgrading ..
bp-themes contains the original buddypress RC2 theme.
I’ve backed up the entire wordpress directory, copied the database, downloaded the zip and overwritten everything. WordPress MU seems to work perfectly. I wonder if BuddyPress would break if I’d return it to it’s RC1 state with the newer WordPress MU installed?
OT: I also wonder why there is an \”Inactive\” above my name, bug?

Do you have by any chance the sunrise (domain mapping) or any redirect plugins installed?
I tried by disabling them but I know WordPress is a little bit persistent on it’s redirections; if you got the same installed, it might be a good idea to look towards the mapping since the SLUGS are not working at all.
First change your home theme to a standard WordPress default theme, disable all other plugins, then try and delete.

Group forums dont work at all.. keep getting an error when trying to post. The email notification have html tags in them, and i got to figure out how the heck to import my users from a regular wordpress install.

The upgrade process will remove a few BuddyPress tables that are not needed anymore in RC2. Don’t worry, though. All the important data is safe. So, as long as you have a recent backup of your DB, you’ll be fine.
As far as shutting down your site during the upgrade, I usually make a post the day before stating that I’ll be performing upgrades. Since it is should take no more than 10 minutes, usually it is not an issue.
But part of the upgrade process has been to delete everything except your wp-config file, various files in /wp-content/ (and of course your database), if someone attempts to go to the site during the upgrade, there may be no files to serve. So, with more established sites, I’ll stick an index.html file in root so that it will be served if someone comes while I’m upgrading. In that file, I have the logo and a “be back soon” or something like that message. This is overkill for most sites though.
Finally, you could look at the Lock Outplugin. I’ve never used it and I do not know if it works with WPMU 2.7+.

BuddyPress RC2 will consolidate your activity streams and merge the tables. It will also go through and add any additional settings that are missing and set them as default if for some reason they do not already exist.
As long as you have not hacked the core of your install, upgrading from RC1 to RC2 should not harm any of your existing data.
There is a built in maintenance mode when using the automatic update feature of WordPress, but for something manual (such as RC1 to RC2), I might recommend something like…

i think the problem your having is the fact that p2 is not a “buddypress theme”
like in the main theme how it has a large widget area and 2 small ones, and also has a BLOG tab where the main blog is
the problem your having with p2 (and any other standard wordpress theme) is the BLOG tab is displayed on the main page rather than a large widget sidebar, as the recent blog posts thing is actually a widget, if you put this widget in your p2 sidebar you will see a direct comparison between the 2
currently you cant have a p2 “theme” that aggregates ALL blog posts like the buddypress widget does,
all the users will be posting to the main blog if you want them to use p2, and if you do then the current skin should be fine? it was designed to show comments
im sure you could add some nice jscript to add collapsing comments? this would probably bring better functionallity to your site if you didnt want the comments taking up the whole page?
It is extremely important that you follow the upgrade guide if you are upgrading from 1.0 RC-1 to 1.0 RC-2 or 1.0 Release of BuddyPress.

there is a plugin to disable the dashboard but then obviously they cant edit the blog?
i think what your looking for is just plain wordpress (not mu / multi user) and buddypress which is upcoming, theres a thread about it in the forum if your interested, it would definately be worth a read and then base your decision on that
Anyway, updating to wpmu 2.7.1 first is ever better 
Hi everyone. Just installed WPMU 2.7.1 and BP trunk r1401 and it looks like it’s all running well.
I’d like to keep BP simple for users… as simple as possible. For example, I don’t want people to be able to see the WordPress backend as it will take them out from BP user experience. I don’t want to give people options for how their page looks, what they can add or subtract, etc. I want to control all of this from the main WPMU admin as the site grows and keep the site very simple for users to post, interact and share information.
Maybe there are some threads and tips I can be pointed to, other admins who are doing this. All comments and advise is very appreciated! Thank you to everyone who is working on BP, it is very slick!
