If you don’t need to install BuddyPress and make sure it works for all WP and BP upgrades including BP plugins, then you can stay in that setup.
If you do want BP in your setup, backup database and server files and save to hard drive then reverse the process you went through “giving WP it’s own directory”, you can then reinstall WP at domain root.

But I want it to display their usernames instead of their RealNames.

@mercime
ParticipantIf you are going to use an external forum software, then you can just go to dashboard > BuddyPress > Component Set up > Groups – Disabled. Note that if you go this route, you would have to create a plugin to integrate your forum software with BuddyPress.
If you want to use the internal bbPress forum which you install via BuddyPress > Forums Setup , then you have to keep the groups enabled because the default forums are connected to groups. https://codex.buddypress.org/buddypress-site-administration/buddypress-forum/ In this scenario, you could rename and use Groups as the Main Forum sections like https://wordpress.org/support/ and adjust navigation in BP Admin Bar, Main Navigation and Item Navigation accordingly.

Note that I just created the bp-custom.php file. Oh, and, how can I add a search bar in the adminbar? but not the BP searchbar, i want to add the wordpress default searchbar. Thanks!

Member@mercime Yes I was talking to PCWriter about this issue. The strange thing is, the admin bar displayed once the site was firts set up, and was there for about a week then it went? I used Softaculous on cPanel to install WordPress to my site, then I downloaded the BuddyPress plug in from the WordPress admin. Here is the website in question.

The last time I tested https://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory a year ago and installed BP, it just didn’t work. Since you just created your site, why not start from scratch and install WordPress in domain root?

ParticipantGreg, I am using W3TC for object caching (xcache opcode) and browser caching. Along with that I am using MAXCDN as the CDN (was prior using Amazon S3). MAXCDN is set now to cache almost all of my graphics, css, and javascripts -including plugins and child-themes. One of the two sites I was referring to is a straight WordPress site: http://mustech.net and the other is a BUDDYPRESS, non-multi-site (single site), site (htttp://musicpln.org – registration only).
I’ve set up a different pullzone for each of the sites using maxcdn.

@mercime
ParticipantYou should do some research. Maybe I missed it but I don’t see any links for pre-sales support at http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting/ esp. mod_rewrite? PHP 5+? GD library bundled with PHP? at least 32MB memory? etc.
There are many issues with WordPress alone on Yahoo! hosting, adding a poweful plugin like BuddyPress …

ParticipantHi,
Sorry about my english
I am not a native…It more about the 2nd option: is the “old plugin” a BP-compatible plugin which needs updating to be compatible with BuddyPress 1.2.8 / WordPress 3.1
I have asked someone to do it in France two years ago but this person just disappears now..
And to be honest I don’t think I will be able to update it, my knowledge in php could be sum up by those three letters..So maybe I am gonna post on this link you sent me..
Anyway, thanks a lot for the answer

ParticipantOk, I see the screenshot now. And yes, you have links to the Pages (text so small I can’t read them all) at the footer of your theme.
In actual site (home page) looking at page source, I see the empty div
``
wp_nav_menu is being called but not rendered. This is because the function is not supported in your theme.Open up functions.php file of your theme https://themes.svn.wordpress.org/bp-columns/1.2/functions.php
and add the following line just above closing `?>``add_action( ‘init’, ‘register_goldbrick_menus’ );
function register_goldbrick_menus() {
register_nav_menus(
array(
‘footer-menu’ => __( ‘Footer Menu’ )
)
);
}`
Then save and upload.Open up your footer.php and replace:
`<?php wp_nav_menu(
array(
‘theme_location’ => ”,
‘menu’ => ”,
‘container’ => ”,
‘container_class’ => ”,
‘container_id’ => ”,
‘menu_class’ => ”,
‘menu_id’ => ”
)
); ?>`with
` ‘footer-menu’ ) ); ?>`
Then save and upload.
In dashboard Appearance > Menus. Choose Footer Menu and add the links.

Participant== I have an old plugin that someone developped for my project ==
Your post title says BP 1.0.3 plugin. So that “old plugin” you’re referring is BuddyPress 1.0.3, right? Or is the “old plugin” a BP-compatible plugin which needs updating to be compatible with BuddyPress 1.2.8 / WordPress 3.1?
If you need to hire somebody, post here: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-jobs-board/
If you want to explore upgrading the installation yourself:
– backup database and server files
– deactivate all plugins and change theme to default theme
– version upgrades of BP/WPMU and later BP WPMS
– download BP versions from here: https://trac.buddypress.org/browser/tags
– download WordPress WPMU/WP from here: https://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/
(MU versions in last table of webpage)Better yet, if that install has not been used at all, drop tables and delete .htaccess and wp-config (after DB backup of course), and start from scratch – WP 3.1 and BP 1.2.8

Still not clear. If you’ve added template codes to “call” Pages in specific areas of the site, then you should see the Pages whether you’re admin or not, unless you’ve added a conditional statement `if (is_super_admin)` in front of the code … did you?
It would help if you posted a link to a screenshot of what you see as Super Admin or Site Admin along with site URL or another screenshot of what’s happened next. What theme are you using?

Participant@goldbrick said in my profile update
Hi Mercime
Thanks for the reply, i did post over at buddypress but did not get a response so i thought i would try here.
By Footer pages i mean i have created pages in wordpress called terms, privacy, about us, blog etc. and they oonly show up in the footer area of the site when i am logged in as admin, if you where to view the site now in the footer there is just a copywrite text in the footer.
Even if i type the URL of the page into the browser the page does not display it comes up with a 404 error. If i then log in as admin and do the same the page will display?
I hope i have explained it ok.
Thanks

ParticipantThanks for the replies guys.
It’s my own dedicated server, and I run 10+ wordpress sites from it, so I’m sure it’s not a problem with the GD library (images a generated no problem). I also checked to make sure that php safe mode wasn’t enabled.
All current avatars fail to show, indicating that buddypress is looking in the wrong location (they have been uploaded). It fails at the upload, not the generation stage.
I’m sure it’s something to do with the transfer, as I’m sure buddypress would run fine on my server from a standard installation.
My new DOCUMENT_ROOT is /var/www/vhosts/paintballpimp.co.uk/httpdocs .. which is different from the other server, and I suspect this might be causing the problem. This value must be stored somewhere in the database or settings?
Thanks again guys

Participant@imon275 Before installing BuddyPress see requirements including WordPress configuration https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/
You should create a network (go multisite) https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network and resolve any issues at WP.org multisite forum https://wordpress.org/support/forum/multisite first.
