ParticipantThanks for helping jeff.
Say I have a site containing some of the same sections as on this site and the standard buddypress theme:
Home | About | Blog | Members | Groups | Blogs | Profile (users profile)
The BP-home theme (regular wordpress theme) would that be controlling the ‘Home’, ‘About’ and ‘Blog’ sections?
While Bp-member theme would be controlling sections like ‘Members’, ‘Groups, ‘Blogs’ and the ‘Profile’ section for each user?
Or is it the bp-home theme that controls all the sections. Meaning ill just have to integrate buddypress tags/loops to the different pages that I create on my bp-home theme?

Andy Peatling
KeymasterThe span is used to inject the actual time-since, as this is not stored in the database. If you remove the span it’s going to break the output (which is why you won’t find it in any template files).
Is there another way you can do this? There is a filter on the output if you know how to use WordPress filters.

ParticipantNo, wpmu is in english.. I renamed the files to buddypress-el_GR.po and buddypress-el_GR.mo but still no change. The country code and language code are correct, because I found them in wordpress documentation.
I still don’t know what’s wrong, though..

ParticipantI figured out that if you set the time settings in Settings / General and you have another language installed, it is getting resetted. When its default its fine by me, as soon as I adjust WPLANG into nl_NL the notice is back again.
edit: I uploaded the dutch pack to wordpress MU and got all fixed, only the Members widget (New tab) is showing [Adjust Time Zone]

KeymasterNo, not yet. Future versions you would be able to, but I’m not aware of any timescale for this yet.

KeymasterPossible user error.
@Arturo – check this from the readme. You might have missed it to.To install in WordPress MU (Forced Activation/Site-Wide):
1. Upload the
wp-recaptchafolder to the/wp-content/mu-pluginsdirectory1. **Move** the
wp-recaptcha.phpfile out of thewp-recaptchafolder so that it is in/wp-content/mu-plugins1. Now you should have
/wp-content/mu-plugins/wp-recaptcha.phpand/wp-content/mu-plugins/wp-recaptcha/1. Go to the administrator menu and then go to **Site Admin > reCAPTCHA**
1. Get the reCAPTCHA keys [here](http://recaptcha.net/api/getkey?domain=www.blaenkdenum.com&app=wordpress \”reCAPTCHA API keys\”) and/or the MailHide keys [here](http://mailhide.recaptcha.net/apikey \”MailHide keys\”)

May 2, 2009 at 5:02 pm #44131In reply to: get_site_option() not found, fatal error triggered
Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterYou are trying to use BuddyPress with WordPress. BuddyPress needs WordPress MU which you can get from https://mu.wordpress.org/download/. In future versions, BuddyPress will work with regular WordPress but at the moment it doesn’t.
And before you ask ‘how long’, I suspect it will be quite a while before BuddyPress supports WordPress.

The primary resource for learning about translating WordPress files is here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Translating_WordPress
Also, some helpful forum threads:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=171

Finally, when you’ve completed your translation, it would nice if you would add and link in the codex: https://codex.buddypress.org/translations/
May 2, 2009 at 2:57 pm #44119In reply to: reducing the width of buddypress theme
Jeff Sayre
ParticipantIs the height parameter a must, or can you leave it like (800, )?
No. You cannot leave the parameter blank. You could pass a variable into the space if you wanted, but it must have something.
When I tried to remove one WPMU folder I got the error message
“500 Can’t Remove Directory. Permission denied”.
A few questions:
- Have you checked the files / folder permission on your WPMU install? You should be able to delete everything that you personally upload to your public_html. Although, with shard hosting, there could be issues with apache owning certain files and folders.
- Are you using an automatic WordPress Mu install option from your hosting company? I’m not sure if any hosting companies offer that option for WPMU, but it’s worth asking.
The answer I got was WPMU does something at the Apache level and that I can’t do much about it unless mine is a dedicated hosting service.
- Have you contacted tech support for your hosting service provider and asked for their help? This WPMU forum post may prove useful in talking with tech support: https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=3173&replies=3#post-19388
- Have you considered changing hosting companies or upgrading to a more robust hosting plan? A VPS perhaps?
WPMU really does not do too well on a cheap hosting plan. Here is sage advice from andrea_r, a WPMU guru: http://wpmututorials.com/news/choosing-a-host/
I have a new installation now.
I think the width problem is to be fixed elsewhere.
Please consider these:
As far as figuring out what’s going on with your CSS, this is where the Firebug tool comes in very handy! It takes awhile to learn how to use it. But once you do, you can determine where a given div or class is pulling its instructions from and then temporarily override those selector parameters within Firebug and see how that affects the overall layout. It is a very powerful and useful tool!
Concerning CSS issues with IE6: my personal opinion is to not worry about supporting that browser anymore. It is just a big pain and too much work for too little return–less than 20% usage ( http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp ). Again, that is just my opinion.

Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterImporting blogs (your second bullet point) is part of WPMU and nothing to do with Buddypress. You can do this by visiting /wp-admin/import.php on your site as an admin user.
The first bullet point is something that at least person is working on, but I don’t expect to see anything released for a long time yet.
I will eat my hat if their isn’t an existing RSS widget for WordPress. Have a look through https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/.

ParticipantMaythil-
You’re welcome–although I don’t know how helpful I’ve been.
With FTP, you should be able to go into your web root and do pretty much anything you want–that is assuming your hosting firm gives you FTP access privileges.
ie6 only displays 800px screens. is there a way to trick firefox or chrome into behaving like that?
Well, it seems that you are trying to do just that via the CSS. I’m not sure what the issue is though?
I suppose you could use JavaScript to force a resize of the browser window but this would only work for users you have javascript enable (most do) and have not set the Firefox Option that prevents a script from moving or resizing a window. Look here: http://schleichermann.wordpress.com/2009/02/04/javascript-resize-window/
Another great FireFox Add-on is the Web Developer Tools. It may help you gain more insight into what is going on!

ParticipantHi there,
when following the upgrading instructions I forgot to activate the new plugins after uploading them manually. Instead I continued with all the theme changes right away [edit: on the ftp-server].
After all, I can not log into my MU installation at all – there is just a blank screen. I tried to bring the old files back in place – without success.
Is there any way that I do not have to re-install all of WordPress MU in order to get back my admin panel??? *argh*

ParticipantOkay thanks. What I did last time i created a theme was pretty much following these instructions: http://www.jestro.com/web-design/convert-xhtml-css-to-wordpress/
So the theme I create for buddypress has to have the same kind of structure with a header, content, footer ect. And then eventually after i’ve structured it like that I can implement buddypress tags/loops into the layout and style with CSS.

belogical
ParticipantAs I think about this more, I might have made an incorrect assumption. I assumed that the home theme could be used for each new users home theme as well. Now looking at the demo site, it looks like Andy just used the home theme for the main site, then set the default theme as WordPress Classic.
Did I make an incorrect assumption, or was the home theme intended for all users default blog as well?

ParticipantThis is what i have in my main blog theme that works nicely.. in the wordpress header..
http://buddypress.pastebin.com/m63552cf1
I just want to do the same thing on the buddy press side of things..
the above code doesnt work on the buddy press side.
I have been trying things like..
<?php echo bp_the_site_member_name(); ?>
The idea is to just alow for a quick create group button that takes dynamically adds the users username based on this url..
http://spotskenya.com/spotters/!!!!!username!!!!!/spots/create/
does that make sense??

ParticipantHi Jeff,
I once designed a theme for wordpress yes. Been a while thou. I know CSS pretty well.

Anyways, ill probably figure it out once ive played around with the skeleton theme for a week or two. I guess its like designing a wordpress theme just that now you have buddypress tags to play with as well.
Do you know why the 3 sections Members, Groups and Blogs looks like they arnt connected to any css file in the skeleton theme?

ParticipantEzd-
Have you worked much with CSS before? Have you designed a custom WordPress theme before?
If not, here are some resources I recommend for starters:
- First, if you’re not using the Firefox browser, do so. Also, install the FireBug Add-on.
- Second, the WordPress Codex is a great resource for theme designers
- Finally, BuddyPress themes are unique themes in the WP family. Andy has written a great BuddyPress Codex on BP theme loops

Participant@Squashroby & @Tyviris-
It appears that both of you are using WordPress single user version. BuddyPress must be used with WordPress Multi-User version (WPMU).
You can download it here: https://mu.wordpress.org/download/
Start over from scratch. First, delete all the files (except any custom themes you may have created or downloaded). Create a new MySQL database. Them go though the install process again:
- Install WPMU — the multi-user version! Follow these instructions
- Next, install BuddyPress following these instructions

KeymasterThreaded comments were introduced in wordpress 2.7 and is an option in the admin settings. A theme has to have been written to support that version of wordpress due to changes in how themes were done.

Participant@Jeff Sayre
Also having the same problem as Squashroby.
I installed 2.7.1 from the wordpress website twice and it both didn’t have:
‘define(‘SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE’, 1);’
I’ve replaced it in the area you mentioned and I still get the same error.
If possible, could you provide the new WPMU 2.7.1 download that you downloaded or a correct version of the wp-config-sample.php file? The one I downloaded from here: https://wordpress.org/download/ didn’t have: ‘define(‘SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE’, 1);’. in the wp-config-sample.php file.

He doesn’t have a threaded forum, it’s a threaded comment system. Better yet, it’s available to you if you use the P2 theme!
