KeymasterFirst change your home theme to a standard WordPress default theme, disable all other plugins, then try and delete.

ParticipantJfcarter-
The upgrade process will remove a few BuddyPress tables that are not needed anymore in RC2. Don’t worry, though. All the important data is safe. So, as long as you have a recent backup of your DB, you’ll be fine.
As far as shutting down your site during the upgrade, I usually make a post the day before stating that I’ll be performing upgrades. Since it is should take no more than 10 minutes, usually it is not an issue.
But part of the upgrade process has been to delete everything except your wp-config file, various files in /wp-content/ (and of course your database), if someone attempts to go to the site during the upgrade, there may be no files to serve. So, with more established sites, I’ll stick an index.html file in root so that it will be served if someone comes while I’m upgrading. In that file, I have the logo and a “be back soon” or something like that message. This is overkill for most sites though.
Finally, you could look at the Lock Outplugin. I’ve never used it and I do not know if it works with WPMU 2.7+.
Good luck!

KeymasterBuddyPress RC2 will consolidate your activity streams and merge the tables. It will also go through and add any additional settings that are missing and set them as default if for some reason they do not already exist.
As long as you have not hacked the core of your install, upgrading from RC1 to RC2 should not harm any of your existing data.
There is a built in maintenance mode when using the automatic update feature of WordPress, but for something manual (such as RC1 to RC2), I might recommend something like…

hyrxx
Participanti think the problem your having is the fact that p2 is not a “buddypress theme”
like in the main theme how it has a large widget area and 2 small ones, and also has a BLOG tab where the main blog is
the problem your having with p2 (and any other standard wordpress theme) is the BLOG tab is displayed on the main page rather than a large widget sidebar, as the recent blog posts thing is actually a widget, if you put this widget in your p2 sidebar you will see a direct comparison between the 2
currently you cant have a p2 “theme” that aggregates ALL blog posts like the buddypress widget does,
all the users will be posting to the main blog if you want them to use p2, and if you do then the current skin should be fine? it was designed to show comments
im sure you could add some nice jscript to add collapsing comments? this would probably bring better functionallity to your site if you didnt want the comments taking up the whole page?

Participantthere is a plugin to disable the dashboard but then obviously they cant edit the blog?
i think what your looking for is just plain wordpress (not mu / multi user) and buddypress which is upcoming, theres a thread about it in the forum if your interested, it would definately be worth a read and then base your decision on that

ParticipantOf course I know how to backup database and restore it. However, the normal database backup does not work for me. I get following error:
mysqldump: mysqldump: Couldn’t execute ‘show table status like ‘wp\_user\_999\_friends\_activity\_cached”: Out of memory (Needed 2093952 bytes) (5)
mysqldump: mysqldump: Couldn’t execute ‘show table status like ‘wp\_user\_999\_friends\_activity\_cached”: Out of memory (Needed 2093952 bytes) (5)
I tried restoring an older version of the backup of live site on my test site setup using XAMPP on my desktop. I get “Fatal Error”
>>Fatal Error
If your blog does not display, please contact the owner of this site.
If you are the owner of this site please check that MySQL is running properly and all tables are error free.
Could Not Find Blog!
Searched for localhost.localdomain/rkn/ in wordpressmu::wp_blogs table. Is that right?
What do I do now?
Read the bug report page. Some of the guidelines there may help you figure out what went wrong.
If you’re still stuck with this message, then check that your database contains the following tables:
wp_blogs
wp_users
wp_usermeta
wp_site
wp_sitemeta
wp_sitecategories
If you suspect a problem please report it to the support forums but you must include the information asked for in the WPMU bug reporting guidelines!

April 23, 2009 at 10:05 am #43303Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterHmm files have been both added and removed. Whilst you could just upload/overwrite, that wouldn’t remove the files that have been removed. You’d have to check very very carefully.
Ergo I suggest you delete all your existing files but keep the database. Upload the new files, then visit the admin pages and it should update the database.

ParticipantIt would be great to have an option for setting events permalink structures. WordPress can’t afford to display non English permalinks (slugs) that are long unlike Amazon. So for example, I need to use event ID rather than event titles.

or would it require a straight fresh install?

enlightenmental1
Participantok… after reading a bunch on some forums… this is possible with mod rewrite
(alot of cool things could be done with mod rewrite in .htaccess)
for example,
user types in
username.domain.com
and the user gets served
domain.com/members/username
or user types in
domain.com/username
and the user gets served
domain.com/members/username
so either way the domain gets entered, the user will still get served the same page
any mod rewrite gurus out there?
I envision a BP Admin option to select how member pages are viewed,
which would then add a condition to the mod rerwite in .htaccess
like choosing permalink structure in regular wordpress
this would be a great addition to BP

John James Jacoby
KeymasterThere are some plugins that exist to mimic this functionality, but no, nothing exactly like what you describe yet.
The problem is translating post content, like categories, post titles, and body copy. There would need to be multiple versions of each item with the same slug, which isn’t currently possible with WordPress at the core.

ParticipantDear John,
1. All my files now are virgins right now. I have not modified a line anywhere.
In my previous installation I had done some modification and thought it had somehow corrupted the alphabetical seraching. But it doesn’t work in the new installation too.
Can you please take a look at http://onlicone.com/cone/wordpress-mu/members ?
2. Yes, I meant Avatars. In my previous installation, friends who registered for test purpose had this problem — even after the uploaded avatar was successfully loaded and displayed correctly for hours or days.

KeymasterCandace81,
I’m going to guess that WordPress MU 2.7.1 doesn’t play nicely with BuddyPress RC1.
However, I’m going to try them out and see if I run into these same issues.
If you can give me a half-hour to install and configure and get back here, that would be awesome.
Worst case scenario, I’ll point you in the direction of how to download the trunk. BuddyPress RC2 will most likely be out by the end of the week (still have some minor things to test and clean-up before release.)
April 22, 2009 at 1:15 am #43176In reply to: No BP Admin Area
Burt Adsit
ParticipantThat would be wpmu from here: https://mu.wordpress.org/download/
And bp from here: https://buddypress.org/download/
Those two would be the latest official releases. Where did you put bp? That version of bp should go in /mu-plugins. You should have a bunch of files like bp-core.php, bp-<whatever>.php in that dir and also a bunch of subdirs like /mu-plugins/bp-activity, /mu-plugins/bp-<whatever>
That what you have running?
April 21, 2009 at 9:44 pm #43152Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterWell, how latest?
I mean, WPMU 2.7.1 came out a couple hours ago. https://mu.wordpress.org/download/.
BP rc2 is likely to come out in the next day or two. BP rc2 and the current trunk and the v1 release will need WPMU 2.7.1. I suggest you wait for BP rc2, then upgrade to WPMU 2.7.1 and BP rc2 and see if the problem remains.
There’s been so much stuff fixed since rc1..

I\’m running the latest WPMU (2.7)
Then you’re not running either WPMU 2.7.1-beta1 or -beta2?
If that is the case, then this is the issue. WPMU 2.7.1 has been required since BuddyPress r1303.
Fortunately, you’re in luck! WPMU 2.7.1 was just officially released this afternoon. Read this ( http://ocaoimh.ie/2009/04/21/wordpress-mu-271/ ) and get it here: https://mu.wordpress.org/download/
