bbPress is going to be turned into a WP plugin which would mesh well hopefully with BuddyPress as lead dev for bbPress is also one of leads for BuddyPress.
    https://trac.bbpress.org/roadmap

Some have used SimplePress Forums, Mingle Forums, or BP Global Forums ($30) for what you want.

Anyone can sell BuddyPress or WordPress themes. License must be GPL.

if you want to allow your members to create blogs and go multisite, then yeah the members will have access to the backends of respective blogs. For site where BP is installed, members cannot access Add New Post unless you elevate their roles from anything other than Suscriber level which is default set in Super Admin Options.

For front end posting compatible with BP, https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/one-quick-post/

This isn’t BP specific. Google is your friend. There a ton of tutorials about WordPress plugin creation.

Welp, too late for the OP but in case anyone else gets this error when trying to get the BP Compatibility Pack working, here’s what fixed it for me.
    1. Multisite enabled on your WP installation. You need to add a line to your wpconfig.php file to do so (unless there’s an admin menu I’ve missed). Here’s the directions: https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network.
    2. Buddypress installed and activated. However, if you’re using the BP Compatibility Pack, it’s because you want to use your WP theme, so do not enable the Buddysite-specific theme.
    3. BP Compatibility Pack installed and enabled, then you can do the walkthrough to set up BPCP and you won’t get the error.

Even though having installed both properly. Having in bbpress set up correctly the wordpress integration settings as well as in buddypress having setup the forum to the bbpress.

When I log into buddypress, and then click on my forum tab that points to the bbpress forums I set up. a user has to log in again! Is there a way that when I log in through the buddypress side the bbpress also gets logged in also?

    Thank you for your help!

Is there a way to automatically enable a plugin for all current users, and have it be automatically added for new users aswell?

Same for widgets, is there a way to create a standard set of widgets that are enabled on all blogs? (i have the same theme on all blogs across my site).

I want to give my members the possibility to user certain plugins (if they like) that are available on wordpress (multisite), although i am currently running Buddypress ontop of my Wp 3.1 install.

I´d like to provide functionality like “disqus” “backtype”, post to facebook, post to twitter.. there are alot of plugins to do this, but they are all for wordpress, and not for buddypress, is this going to be a problem?

Is there an update for this fix? 1.2.7 broke this solution on our site and I can’t find an alternative so far.

Really, it’s extremely annoying that BuddyPress keeps making changes to the themes in minor updates. Every update (1.2.7 also saw us gain an unwanted admin bar menu item with links to the WordPress backend) sees us having to chase down the little changes they made which break our layout.

Regarding the ‘export’/’import’ of WordPress. At some point in the future when BuddyPress (may) use custom post types for (some of) its components, I hope that those components can also be exported without any extra work on our part. “For free.”

As and when we get closer to doing this work, we’ll see best what the situation is.

I think there should be an option to have an export of some type similar to wordpress to avoid backing up old or junk databases. This will allow to get a clean install. I think @DJPaul has this on his to-do.

I have a WordPress site utilizing a magazine theme [ http://www.bluesasianetwork.com ]. I am considering building a fully developed BuddyPress installation as a subdomain, i.e. community.bluesasianetwork.com — but I am not sure if this is an advisable route. I guess that would make for an awkward structure for blogs within the community, with a blog having a URL like blog.community.bluesasianetwork.com

I would appreciate any advice from others who have installed a BuddyPress site as a sub-domain.

    THANKS.

I would like to add a custom page template (a specialized online payment form) that I can use in the BP-compatible theme I am using (Custom Community). I don’t want to mess with the theme itself, so am attempting the Child Template functionality of WordPress.

When I enable my extended theme, I get much of the Custom Community theme functionality, but things like menus are messed up.

Is there something beyond the normal Child Template functionality required to make this page template? Or, is there another way to make a new page template available in an existing theme, while still following the good development practice of separating my custom work from the theme itself?

What I have done so far:
    * added a new folder to the themes directory, and in this folder…
    * added a style.css whose template name is “custom-community”
    * added a file online-payments.php with the normal WP comment header (including “Template Name: Online Payments”), then
    * activated my child theme — much functionality works, I can see my page template in the list when creating a new page but the header image, menu customizations, etc. of my buddypress theme are missing.

I actually just want a new page template type, not necessarily a new child theme. Is there a way to retain the functionality of the Custom Community template while adding a custom page type that I can create?

    Thanks all!

Wonderful solution, but it only partially import comments and blog posts. When I try to hit the button again I did import a few more, but the third time I ended up with just this message and no import:

    Blog name: WordPress Dimensie

    Blog name: WordPress Dimensie

    Blog name: WordPress Dimensie
    Importing: ""
    Importing: ""
    Importing: ""

Any clue as to what’s going on here? Because I’m stumped and I would appreciate any and all help :)
Working with 3.1beta2 and BP 1.2.7 btw..

You do not answer my question …
It is possible manually resend the message? It can be validated by the admin manually?
The subjective responses of the merits of wordpress is not useful …
Management accounts BuddyPress if you can not do that is not terrible in this case … There is a plugin to do what I want?

“specifically designed for wpmu or buddypress”

There doesn’t need to be – just pick one of the many that grabs *all* the database tables.

Hi @boonebgorges, that sounds so great! It disappointed me, that it is so difficult to give group members the possibility to just write articles in a group. WordPress started as a Bloggingsystem, and the missing possibility to write articles in groups is for me like something is really missing there.

Of course there is the groupblog plugin, but I think it’s a bit overloaded, to create a blog for every group, just to have some articles in this place.

There is another plugin from Brajesh Singh http://buddydev.com/buddypress/blog-categories-for-groups-plugin/. But nothing like a framework, to build your own component on it.

At the moment, the only easy starting point is on quick post plugin, but this plugin turned of buddypress support in the latest versions.

To have a framework for custom post type support in BP (front end editing, integration into nav menus, etc) to build custom post type components for buddypress with the possibility, to write articles from the frontend with the same functionality like the backend offers, would make buddypress application field much more powerful. Groups could be such a beautifully bloging tool.

Thanks for that news, and Happy Christmas

I posted the ticket at: http://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2968

Though this bug exsists in BP1.2.7, I chose 1.2.6 in creating the ticket as there was no choice of 1.2.7.

Avatars that users uploaded for themselves are stored in /wp-content/uploads/. the upload_dir if settled at /wp-content/uploads for the primary site(= buddypress site) by WordPress 3.x.

Looking at the line 570 of /bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php:
    `$upload_dir[ ‘baseurl’ ] = str_replace( get_blog_option( $current_blog->blog_id, ‘home’ ) , get_blog_option( BP_ROOT_BLOG, ‘home’ ), $upload_dir[ ‘baseurl’ ] );`

This points the upload_dir at /wp-content/blogs.dir/files/xxx, and absolutely wrong.

    Should be changed to:
    `$upload_dir[ ‘baseurl’ ] = get_home_url( BP_ROOT_BLOG, ‘/’ ) . get_blog_option( BP_ROOT_BLOG, ‘upload_path’);`

@hnla Ahhh yes. Will keep in mind … didn’t realize there was a distinction when on the BP homepage one of the specific features mentioned says “Even allow each of your users to start their own full powered WordPress blog.” It doesn’t say anything about Multi-site, so I thought this was a feature of BP. Maybe there needs to be some clarification on that feature description to avoid confusing folks.

Now, due to a problem with a photogallery, I had to change everyone from “Member” to Contributor which then allows members to post on on the site – just not on “their own full powered WordPress blog.” This may suffice for now.

@mercime I was aware of the difference between a real and a wildcard/virtual subdomain but not having had to create the wildcard functionality didn’t have a clue on how to implement. Suffice it to say I went to my hosting guys and got “Oh that’s easy. We’ll take care of that for you.” I’m about to dive in to the remaining instructions.

Thanks to all of you for your input and guidance!

I decided test this with the new version of buddypress (1.2.7) and a new install of wordpress. The problem still there.

    Steps:
    Upload test image
    do not move crop box
    click on crop image

    Default crop selection:
    http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/6979/changeavatar.png

    After clicking on crop image:

    Notice two different crop image?

    Hi there,

I want to customise a few things on the profile page, ie:
    – Change items in profile nav
    – Add cubepoints points

    etc..

But I have no idea which files I need to edit, and I keep reading that I shouldn’t touch the core files, but not sure how to edit otherwise (when I do find the right files that is…)

I am pretty comfortable with wordpress customisation, but with buddypress I feel like I am learning from scratch.

    thanks

    Kate

I’ve tried all the filters and same message. If I clear cache, cookies etc. and just the main activity page it showsup. But if I try a filter I get that message again. Then after that if I try a refresh it’s now broken…

If I go to group forums page, that’s fine. But members own filters and even GROUPS have the same issue… :( This broken filter is a huge problem … Any ideas?

    Wordpress 3.0.3
    BuddyPress 1.2.6

    [Update]

Looks like it crashed that bp_activity table, said repair failed. So I tried to repair just that table alone via phpMyAdmin and it fixed it. So just a FYI.

@thealchemist if your WP is multisite, you can use dsader’s plugin https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/user-activation-keys/
