Yes, uploading local media would have seemed like the logical first step – before building support for external providers.

I suspect though, that it all comes down to the lack of support for media uploads in core BuddyPress.

I’m curious why the standard WordPress core media uploads / gallery handling / thumb-nailing etc. haven’t been integrated with the BuddyPress member profiles. Is there something fundamental that stops those existing routines from being utilised and mapped to profiles instead of posts? I feel that in this area, 3rd party plugins are unnecessarily re-inventing the wheel.

this might be a daft suggestion and I am by no means an expert but after being logged in and returning to the homepage have you tried typing sitename.com/wp-admin into the address bar?

There sure ought to be. It’d be a great feature for both user update streams and groups. Maybe using the “float to the top” method that has been used to re-highlight commented on activity items

    hi,
i have a website where members / users could insert bio / description to their profile based on the author bio field.
now i added buddypress. is there a way to import the data from wp_usermeta into buddypress or an alternative way to tell buddypress to work with WP bio / description?

    thanks

I’m too learing on how to achieve this process, there is a wonderfull tutorial at http://cleverness.org/2010/08/08/add-user-types-to-wordpress-and-buddypress/ Cindy did a really good job there

If your WP is running well in that same server, permalinks are set to other than default, and only BuddyPress plugin is activated in your install, then I would venture that you might also need to increase PHP memory limit

I started off with a blank theme and no plug ins. After I try to go to sitename/wp-login.php and login, I can not access the wordpress admin anymore.

There are no plug ins running except for buddypress. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? This is really annoying.

    Thanks bye.

Hello, couple questions: Is there a way to have buddypress not use the wordpress UI for logging in? It looks horrible for a member site.

And, why isn’t there a register button anywhere when before logging in?

Last question I wanted to throw in here, do users need to ever do a bbpress install? I noticed there was no forum button anywhere.

    Thanks.

I have copied the default theme and modity it. I add some codes in the home page. (index.php) in the theme folder.
But when I add a input button “ and set it to the index.php, it can not run well.
such as first, the home page is http://localhost/wordpress/
When I click the input button ,the url change to :’http://localhost/wordpress/index.php’
And it show: ‘Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.’ and the index.php display not the first page, but a page like login statement page.
I copy the ‘http://localhost/wordpress/index.php’ to my new ie windows and open it, It also shows the original home page.
What is the reason, how to solve? Thanks.

In reply to: Log IP addresses

Paul – Yes, the server logs IPs, but battling trolls would be a LOT easier if you could just go and look at an IP for account creation in the User Table or something similar.

https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/register-ip/ helps, though it doesn’t put the IP in the MultiSite users menu…

I have noticed this problem too.

A fresh setup …5min WordPress install, add BuddyPress Plugin etc etc…

I can not yet confirm if it only occurs for hotmail users (yuck) and it needs more testing!

But here are some obscured excerpts from my mail logs…

    Node1 webserver and BuddyPress:
    `Oct 19 13:02:42 node1 postfix/smtp[23717]: D67EA2802A: to=, relay=192.168.###.###[192.168.###.###]:25, delay=40, delays=0.33/0.01/0.05/40, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as 5967C292C1)`

Relayed to my Mail Server at Node2:
    `Oct 19 13:02:43 node2 postfix/smtp[27458]: F2173292C4: to=, relay=mx3.hotmail.com[65.55.37.120]:25, delay=0.23, delays=0.01/0.02/0.08/0.12, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Queued mail for delivery)`

I have a pretty good knowledge of Linux and webservices, but this indicates the mail was sent to hotmail… but the user in question never received it – not even in their spam box.

My servers even have a correct SPF text record in the DNS but so far it seems all the hotmail sign ups are not being seen by the end user.

I can only guess that st00pid Microsoft’s hotmail is sending them into a black hole – perhaps they have got fussy about the confirmation link or something?

Even though it would seem it is not a BuddyPress problem, perhaps some tests should be done to find out why this happens (to be honest, I hate hotmail – but a lot of people use it).

If it is something todo with the confirmation link, then maybe there is some kind of work around?

It will be interesting to hear peoples thoughts on this!

Have a look at this page:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/bloginfo

you want bloginfo(‘stylesheet_directory’) instead of TEMPLATEPATH

If you are not familiar with building child themes in WordPress / BuddyPress – you should read this page before beginning:

Before doing that – disable all your plugins back to just base WordPress

Can you post again now without problem?

If you can post ok, add your plugins back one at a time, testing until you find the one causing the problem.

Theoretically it’s possible, but I would really discourage it at this point. You’re basically contemplating taking some 100+ files (I’m guestimating that number, it might actually be closer to 200) from a BuddyPress compatible theme and making them all accessible in the WordPress theme editor. It would be an absolute nightmare.

It sounds like you would need create another folder in your root install of wordpress and title it something like “community”. Then create a bran-new WordPress install in the folder and then install BuddyPress. You’ll effectively have 2 WordPress installs. The one on your “main” site will just be what people look at. But the 2nd install in your community folder will be where people will create accounts, interact, i.e. basically everything else that BuddyPress does.

    Hello all,

First of all, let me say, Im a total newby to all of this WordPress stuff and Im learning FAST!!! Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!! I hope I dont get beat up here…. : (

My question is this: Is there a way to put BuddyPress (or some type of social network) on my WordPress based website but NOT use it as a theme? What I mean is, I wan to use BuddyPress as a social network for my companies website but I want it to be a clickable link at the top of the website as a menu link. Clicking the link would ultimately take them to the “Example Company Online Community”. Almost as if it were taking them to Facebook.

After I installed the BuddyPress plugin in my WordPress, it became PART of my actual website as a theme. Thats not what we want. Is there a way to get a social network “page” within my website without BuddyPress changing my whole website?

    Again, Im a newby here….. be gentle….
