    Hey Hugo! Sorry for the late response back.

    – I have gone through the set up process several times to ensure forums are activated
    – bb-config file is in site root
    – Some details were different here, (the data basename, user name & pw) I changed them to match the wp-config file

    After checking these 3 things off I am again left frustrated. I am sure it is something small and I have been playing with it for a few hours. I can’t seem to get this to work. Id love to rebuild my site and style it again but I need to get this taken care of first

    any insight would be appreciated, if you need any information just let me know

    @mercine, i have buddypress default theme and have de-activated all plugins except Suffusion BuddyPress Pack. i have the same problem as the guys above. (same wp and bp versions as above.) if i have understood correctly, in the email i received, the string

    http://www.mywebsitename.org/activate/?key=9f664b72a0b703fe63a4f61fc2066175

    contains the activation key at:

    9f664b72a0b703fe63a4f61fc2066175

    but when i paste this in the Activation Code box, i stay on the same page and nothing happens.

    You have not indicated whether you perform basic troubleshooting procedures like:
    – First way to address this is to check whether the same behavior applies when you change to bp-default theme.
    – To further isolate the issue, if changing to bp-default doesn’t work, is to deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress and see if issue is corrected.

    I’ve done everything at point 1 and 2 of your list.
    I haven’t deactivated bp-custom.php since I never set up this file and never changed. No idea where it is or if it exists. But I don’t think so since I suppose this is a file you manually set up and I didn’t

    Now I am running WP only with BP plugin using BP-default them having reset the permalinks. Now luck!
    The problem persist! :)

    Any idea?

    My crop tool wasn’t working and it ended up being an error with the way I had enqueued the scripts and a JS error. After upload I was just seeing two versions of the image I had uploaded but no crop tool and nothing was interactive.

    Be sure that jquery and jcrop are actually being called.
    And check out those type errors. It could be stoping JS on those breaks.

    I had wp-activate-users installed and there was a big typo in the JS that ended up being my main culprit for breaking a few other things as well.

    WP/BP versions?

    Have you:
    1. re-run Settings > Permalinks and Set to something other than default permalink?
    2. done basic troubleshooting like changing to bp-default theme and deactivating all plugins except BuddyPress?
    3. deactivated bp-custom.php (if you have one) by renaming the file?

    Another detail I realised, on wp-signups table, I found my 2 tests, with activation key and all. I got the info from the site holder, that ppl arent able to register since september, 2011.

    On the wp-signup, I see 767 entries for new user, none of them activated, all of them have suspicious email accounts and the dates started mid september.

    You can safely delete each Group you’ve created in each Group’s admin settings.
    You can uninstall the Forums for groups in dashboard menu BuddyPress > Forums > uninstall group forums.
    You can uninstall Sitewide Forums in dashboard menu BuddyPress > Forums > uninstall sitewide forums.
    Then, go to BuddyPress > Components > remove checks for User Groups and Discussion Forums

    2) Re: if you look at my site http://www.sweepbook.com/rate-this/ you will notice the menu items are on top of each other

    – I don’t see that in your site. So it’s either you’ve changed the theme to bp-default theme or you’ve decided to use bp-default’s custom menus to organize your links.

    3) Re: The logos on my site, redirects to http://www.sweepbook.com/rate-this

    – Right now I see that you have HTML pages at domain root http://www.sweepbook.com/
    So where did you install WP/BP, in subdirectory rate-this? and the redirect is to

    WP Settings > General > Site Address URI/WordPress Address URI was changed without proper checks and this is not a BuddyPress issue at all.

    Hello,
    I think i have the same issue. With Wp 3.3.1, BuddyPress 1.5.4 and bbPress 2.0.2, when a user try to edit his profile, the nickname is deleted. I try to deactivate all my plugins and change to bp-default theme and no difference. I have no proble with the wp-admin.

    Speaking from experience I suggest WPMU, Networks+ ($$), and BP Multi Network. (You may wanna include the Domain Mapping plugin to map sites to domains.)
    Install WordPress and configure networking, WPMU as a subdirectory installation. (Default)
    Create your mu-plugins folder and upload Networks+. From here you’ll be able to create your different org networks. Each org network can offer blogs which can be created using the BP-Groupblog plugin. This way the group, whether public, private, or hidden, can be associated with the blog.
    Create each of your org networks.
    Install and activate BuddyPress on the main site first.
    Upload your bp multi network plugin to your mu-plugins folder.
    Activate BP on one of your org networks. Once activated your users will be shared across the entire network but your groups and blogs are specific to that org network.

    Right… i have that working, my final ‘issue’ is the way it doesnt like spaces.

    If you register with bp deactivated, you can use spaces in your name. If you then reactivate buddypress you can log in with the name (using spaces) and it just puts the -‘s in the mention part, which is fine.

    However if i register with buddypress installed, the confirmation email is sent with my username and spaces filled with -‘s. So i register with 1 2 3, then my username becomes 1-2-3…

    Any ideas on that one?

    Setting up sitewide forums can be a bit tricky. After you install and activate bbPress, you’ll need to add the bbPress shortcode for your forums index to that page:

    Check your bbPress settings page in the dashboard to see if you’ve got a page/slug conflict with BuddyPress. If you have any trouble, you may want to try unticking the Discussion Forum box in the Components setup page. I’ve found that this helps users who are getting the error: “The forums component has not been set up yet.” I’m sure this process will be smoother in the future, but for now that hint may come in handy.

    I was running into the same issue as you, and this solved it.

    It all depends on what’s happening here.

    Could you go into your wp-config.php file and look for the line
    `define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false);`

    Make sure this is set to true.

    Re-visit your activation page and post the last error message you see (if any).

    Also, in your BuddyPress theme could you find the file located here

    wp-content/themes/your-theme/registration/activate.php

    and post the code that’s within it please.

    I am thinking that this issue may have been caused by some sort of issue caused by either the W3 Total Cache or WP-Optimize plugins, but cannot put my finger upon it. I had deactivated all plugins for a bit to see if that helped correct this issue, but it still hasn’t.

    It seems that after a while, BuddyPress will then collect the information and record it, but the timing isn’t necessarily correct. When users immediately login, it shows ‘active sometime ago’ instead of recording when they were ‘most recently active’.

    – WP/BP versions?
    – did you switch back to bp-default theme and check if issue is corrected?
    – did you deactivate all plugins except BP and see if issue is corrected?

    @davidveldt -This sounds like something that I have yet to do… what exactly should I be changing these things to? This is where my ‘newbie’ status’ comes into play. I have deactivated all plugins and went to the default theme, and still recieved the ‘forum not setup’ error again for the groups…

    I am thinking that this may be exactly what I need to update, but don’t know what I should update my wp-config.php file to exactly? (as in my BBDB_NAME, BBDB_USER, BBDB_PASSWORD and BBDB_HOST files).

    Your help is damn appreciated with all of this!

    Should I be putting my own information or is there something special that goes here? :)

    I just installed WP3.3 & buddypress. Now when a new user register, he/she could receive an email activation link, but when they click, they were just directed to the “blog” page and not login.

    So I have to activate their user status manually … anything wrong?

    I think the “Fourms” code is buggy. I have an install with WP MU multisite and when I try and activate the Forums groups it says I don not have permissions. Works on my local machine but not on my hosted machine. it could be an access user permissions issue.

    If you look at this sites “forums” it too suffers from lack of functionality and the BBpress authors developers cannot fix it or refuse to. This is an indication of bugs in the code.

    i have the same issue. i have also in the wp admin menu only settings, profile fields, components and pages! i use wp 3,2,1 and buddypress 1,5,1 with sitewide forum. forum is simple press. bbpress didnt worked out. so i deactivated it. in the user bar i cant find the genaral groups page. as user or as admin. i have to put site.com/groups manually to see the groups listing page and create link! activitypage also. i mean the genaral pages. there are menus for member releated groups and activity. but genaral member list link is also missing: site.com/members. whats wrong?

    My apologies, yes it used to be call WPMU they have now made it part of the main WordPress install and call it Multisite.

    So yes I have an install of WordPress with Multisite activated. I have not seen anything that says the latest version of Buddypress is not compatible with WordPress Multisite.

    UPDATE
    I have tried a fresh install of WordPress with Buddypress installed. I now have the following happening…

    The settings page still stays the same on a save but if you refresh the page your changes are now visible (This was not happening before). So it seems that the save is now happening it just still shows you the old data first after you press the save button. This seems to make it confusing as you think the save did not complete.

    Further to this, if you use the default buddypress theme the save works first time everytime correctly. The above only seems to happen if I am using a different theme with the buddypress template pack to make the theme compatible.

    So does this mean there is a bug in the template pack? If so any suggestions on how I can make the form display your newly saved data right after the save.

    Check out the `groups_record_activity()` function located in /bp-groups/bp-groups-activity.php.

    You’ll want to hook into the registration or activation actions.

    If you want to hook into the activation action when someone activates via email, check out the “bp_core_activated_user” hook located in /bp-members/bp-members-signup.php.

    I have not encountered that activation issue before. To troubleshoot, I would:
    – Deactivate all plugins including BuddyPress and change to Twenty Eleven theme. Check registration on regular WordPress install. If activation doesn’t work, resolve this first in WP forums and with webhost. If registration/activation works proceed to next step.
    – Activate BuddyPress plugin only and change to bp-default theme. Check registration/activation here. If it doesn;t work, file ticket at https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/newticket (log in with same username and password). It activation works, proceed to activate your theme and other plugins then test again.
