Great plugin! Personally I am using it ONLY for the email subscription. I would like to see integration with Campaign Monitor, as it’s my email tool of choice, but in the meantime I’ve created a MailChimp account to gather email addresses.

Thanks for the answers which answered the same question for me. However I don’t get the message in an orange box – cut and pasted the code into widget in my theme but had to take a couple of bits out – do I need to put anything back in?

    <a class="button" href="”>

I had a problem with a xxxxxx[at]live.com address–as @liveview said, it never appeared in the junk folder even. But then I had no problem with a xxxxxx[at]hotmail.com address a few days later. So it’s not even entirely consistent for me. I have yet to create more accounts to do further testing.

It’s very simple as long as you are running WP MU or WP 3.0 and if WP 3.0 you must have manually configured it for Multi site functionality (You don’t say what you’re running on!)

Then you simply need to set the option allow users to register accounts and blogs in main admin options.

Its very simple, but it took some time to figure out, and several visits here, that taught me nothing.
Go to the menu My Account > Groups > My Groups
You’ll get a long URL with /my-groups/ at the end of it.
Replace “my-groups” with “create”, hit return, and you’re good to go.

How do I redirect to the wordpress login page and not the buddypress registration page? I want to create all the user accounts myself and prevent random people registering for my site. Thanks!

It is just a list item with the class “bp-signup no-arrow”. It doesn’t work pasting it directly into the bp-core-adminbar.php file, if you paste that into your header it creates a navigation bar just the same but only with the links you put in it. I’m still working on figuring out the php to generate the “My Account” and “Notification” links.

For my PRIVATE groups, I did the following to enable forums.

First, I reinstalled the forums from the dashboard (superadmin )

Then, from the buddypress nav bar, I followed
    My Account > Groups > Admin >

Under the Admin submenu, I selected Group Settings and did the following:

UNchecked the “Enable discussion forum” checkbox
    Clicked save
Checked the “Enable discussion forum” box
    Clicked save AGAIN

That enabled forums in the private groups.

Still trying to figure out why these posts are not showing up in the main forum tab though…. ((scratches head))
    Hope this helps someone else.

EDITED: Duh! The forums of private groups do not show up in the general forums page! Related, the site Pressography.com posted the phpMyAdmin version of the fix I outlined above: http://pressography.com/wordpress/daily-tip-fix-for-buddypress-group-forums-error-when-creating-a-new-topic/

The code I’ve posted is actually quite simple when you get right down to it. Simple yet powerful. It does everything you want a dropdown menu to do, and it does it all automatically behind the scenes.

It starts by identifying what links belong to dynamically generated BP directories and adds those to the adminbar in a Community dropdown. To that same dropdown, It then adds all BP directories that are created by any BP plugins you may have installed.

It then identifies all WP pages and adds them to the adminbar also. The really cool part is no matter how you’ve set up your WP page hierarchy and page order in your dashboard, that will be preserved in hierarchical dropdowns like the following example:

    Parent page 1
    – Child page 1
    — Grand-child page 1
    – Child page 2
    – Child page 3…

Go ahead, give it a whirl. Copy the code to bp-custom.php and upload to your plugins folder. No need to activate anything; Buddypress will recognize and execute the code.

Take a look at my homepage: http://nowrecovery.com/

The first dropdown is all Buddypress. The ones after it are all WP. If you create an account and login, you’ll see all the adminbar goodies appear to the left and bump everything else to the right.

    Hi there,
Seems to me that I have similar problem. Installed the last version of WP and BP. Whenever I try to create new group, (or to send a message to some member) I get “There was an error saving group details, please try again.” Also get error msg when is set request for friendship; in my profile can’t edit my profile ( send’s me to the Home page), I can only upload avator. And not to forget, new members can’t create account because they are redirected to a Home page after clicking the button Complete Sing Up, without getting email with the user details. “The hidden trick to creating groups is to enter yourdomain/groups/” wouldn’t help. So if anybody can help, please do it!

I think I may have found the culprit plugins. I set up a new account, and then went in to set up a new blog. All went OK till the final step, and then I got an error message to do with the Eventbrite plugin, so I disabled it, and tried again. This time I got the following error message when I tried to create a new blog:

Catchable fatal error: Object of class WP_Error could not be converted to string in /home/goldber3/public_html/MMQG/wp-content/plugins/the-events-calendar/the-events-calendar.class.php on line 812

I’m going to deactivate this plugin too, and see what happens next.

I am using WP 3.0.1 and BP 1.2.5.2
I am definitely sure that others can see my admin, and not just some parts of it. One fo the other users and I were trying to sort this out, and she coudl see exactly what I see. She actually accessed my admin where she could see the Super Admin links, and she accessed these through one of the other member’s admin area. I suspect the problem lies in that when users register, they end up not as independent users, but as users on the main site ie. mine. When I look at the “sites” area in my admin, i can see that there are many users whose site address is http://melbournemodernquiltguild.com, and then there are a few (ie. a minority) with site addresses as http://melbournemodernquiltguild.com/username. The only thing we’ve been able to establish as to how come this is, is that it seems that if users create a blog at the same time as when they first create their account, they end up with their own site address, ie. http://site/username. Otherwise, if they first create their account, then at a later time create a blog, they end up as a user on http://sitename.com. And I cannot figure out why that is.

These are the plugins I have currently have activated:

    Akismet
    BP Blog Author Profile Link
    BuddyPress
    BuddyPress Chat Component
    BuddyPress Follow
    BuddyPress Group Email Subscription
    BuddyPress Like
    BuddyPress Profile Privacy
    Eventbrite for The Events Calendar
    Fast and Secure Contact Form
    Invite Anyone
    More Privacy Options
    Network Privacy
    One Quick Post
    The Events Calendar
    TinyMCE Advanced
    Welcome Pack

It looks like this could possibly be done. Technically speaking, each profile must correspond to a user account. But conceivably, you could build a piece of functionality that allows one user to edit another user’s profile. The key function is bp_is_my_profile(), which is checked when the profile edit screen is brought up. By default, bp_is_my_profile() only returns true if the profile belongs to the logged in account. But the output of the function is filtered. So you could do the following two things to work around the default limitation: (1) Create some sort of interface that allows other individual accounts to “own” (or be “authorized editors of”) other accounts’ profiles, probably storing that information in a piece of user metadata; (2) Filter the output of bp_is_my_profile to check against that user metadata and return true if the logged_user is an authorized editor of the displayed_user.

I noticed with database caching on in W3 Total Cache that if someone registered on a BP site, two additional accounts would be created with the same username, but their user ID for each of these new accounts would be different. So unfortunately I had to disable database caching.

Haven’t tried W3 Total Cache 0.9 to see if this is fixed.

Forums belong to groups, so you create a group, and make sure the forum box is ticked. There are no sub-forums as far as I know.

The hidden trick to creating groups is to enter yourdomain/groups/

This brings up a form with a create group button. Once the group is created, you can edit it through the top menu bar (My Account – Groups – Admin).

The “Mail From” plugin does indeed work. In the Dashboard I had to go to the Settings menu, in there was listed the “Mail From” plugin. The sender email was a nonexistent account, which was the problem. I changed it to an existing account. I just created a new user account in the website, and the activation email was sent out, immediately. And it worked, too.

    Problem solved.

I am very interested in this plugin.

I would like to use it to create Groups in the Admin site and have the users automatically added to the group based upon a response to a question in their account creation screen. Then the users would be able to create sub groups and have control over those sub groups.

It would also be nice to be able limit access to categories based upon the Main group the subscriber is assigned to.

So Nicola, did you ever create the plugin?

I would like to see the ability to create Groups in the Admin site and have the users automatically added to the group based upon a response to a question in their account creation screen. Then the users would be able to create sub groups and have control over those sub groups.

It would also be nice to be able limit access to categories based upon the Main group the subscriber is assigned to.

@nonegiven I too have this issue but only when I am logged in on an account that has joined thousands of groups.

I have 2000 groups on my site. Admin is a member of all of them and has multiple topics in each. When I log in as admin the page is a little slower to load as the page fetches the number of topics that are admins.

If I log in on an account that has only created a few dozen topics then the page loads quickly. I imagine it is something to do with MYSQL queries.

Hi folks. I fixed it! If you are having this problem, make sure the “anyone can register” box is checked in the general settings. Then, be sure to empty the cache.

Glad it’s solved, I was planning to create an account this morning to have a look but sounds like things are now ok.

Best place to start – if you haven’t already – is the ‘Creating a child theme’ page

I had to do this recently. Here’s a few hints.

    – First, you have to create an interface for changing the usermeta in question. Here’s a simple example, where I added a dropdown to the WP Dashboard Edit User page. the dropdown contains the options “Teacher” and “Student”, and when the profile is saved, the account type is stored in the wp_usermeta table, keyed as ‘acct_type’. (You’ll notice that I’ve only made it available to blog admins – you can change that if you want) http://pastebin.com/n3whEtjd You could just as easily store this information as a piece of BP xprofile data, which has the advantage that you don’t need to worry about the functions for creating the dropdown UI or storing the data on the page. In that case, just add a profile field at Dashboard > BuddyPress > Profile Field Setup
    – Then you’ll need a utility function that you can use in your theme templates to check which account type you’re dealing with, and then to display different stuff depending on the account type. Here’s an example from the same project, where I’m checking whether the *logged in* user is a teacher. http://pastebin.com/MqMksYTD If you’re dealing with xprofile data rather than usermeta, you’ll have to use the xprofile tags instead (see especially xprofile_get_field_data() in bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-templatetags.php). And if you want to check whether the *displayed* user meets a certain criterion (as opposed to the *logged in* user, just call the $bp global (instead of $current_user) and set $user_id = $bp->displayed_user->id (see https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/the-bp-global/ for more details on $bp).

At that point, you can differentiate between the content shown to/about one account type by using conditionals, eg if ( bbg_is_teacher ) { /*blah blah blah*/ } else { /*blah blah blah*/ }. This can happen mostly at the template level.

    Good luck!

    1. There is number of discussion on this forum about issues signing up… most likely they didn’t get the activation e-mail …check spam/junk folder…. I tried to register for your site and did not recieve the e-mail so it may be you are having trouble sending mail from your server? Can you get it to send you an e-mail?

    2. This has be solved here:
    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/fatal-error-when-trying-to-delete-user/
    3. If they have created member accounts and have not “verified”… it may not show as they are listed as “spammer users” until they register…so I’ve read here.
