    I’m not sure I understand what setup you’ve got. Are you using BP 1.1 and also deep integration with bbPress?

    What linking is it that you want?

    In short – I don’t know of any linking between forums in groups and the “external” bbPress forums (with deep integration). If that’s what you’re asking?

    As a rule of thumb, it’s always best to state what version numbers you’re using when asking for troubleshooting support, as well as a clear explanation of what you did.

    How did you install bbPress?

    If you’re using BuddyPress 1.1, there should be a one-click install for bbPress; you shouldn’t have to install bbPress separately.

    More info about bbPress in BP 1.1 can be found here:

    https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/

    Sorry if that wasn’t much help!

    I’m not on BP 1.1+ yet!

    Thanks for the extra education Jeff! I had no idea akismet would bozo – I’ll need to check my buddypress and bbpress sites for that to see if anyone has been perhaps – I had no idea.

    Please note that I was not singling anyone out, I was just frustrated by some short answers on posts that I was looking for the same answer as some other noob.

    I have been scouring the forums trying to figure everything mu related out for years, since pre-version1.3 – and still get confused. I also think that technically any BP question is an MU question since you need the MU to run BP – LOL

    Thanks for listening, and perhaps with so much crossover between the two, a little sidebar search that shows MU forums posts when we search the BP forums would enlighten some of us as to answers found elsewhere.

    I am anxious to see if the new bp 1.1.1 has features built in to adapt the signup email that is sent to new users, and redirects them to a more social page rather then the WP dashboard, or maybe that is still an MU setting and I need to fiddle over on that side of this. I wonder if the redirect stuff that was written here a while back is no longer needed to get that function. I am afraid to upgrade my BP site, as I can’t find instructions for moving the origial BP that was setup in “mu-plugins”.

    I totally understand the mod thing, I mod a couple other sites myself, and I try to answer questions I find in WP and MU forums if I know the answer, and post details as much as possible. Thanks for your help, and everyone else that contributes to this project! I couldn’t do 1% of what everyone it doing here!

    @Bolonki, I’m going to play devils advocate for a second and probably take the wrong side of this conversation, but the problem with query reduction in a social networking platform is that the only way to do it is to limit the available run-time data, or rearrange data structures to the point where other plugins can’t tap into them or repurpose them.

    BuddyPress itself is a core set of 9 plugins, an abstraction layer for WPMU blogs, an API for bbPress, and comes with an elaborate set of functions and API to retrieve that data and use it in a theme; and most of this is accessible on almost every page of your website. If you need the functionality that BuddyPress provides, then hopefully you’re prepared for the overhead it takes to have all of those resources available. If you don’t need parts of it, you can turn them off and reduce queries.

    This isn’t to say that BuddyPress doesn’t strive to be efficient, and in future versions you can bet that as more people become actively involved in the project that it will only get better.

    Everyone has parts of web development that they’re passionate about. Some people dig SEO, some love web standards, others are worried about queries, and others are worried about server speed. There’s a lot of roles and lots of talent paying attention to all of the different aspects of what makes this all work. Remember that this is an open project, and we welcome you or anyone else to take a look at ways to make the platform better and are genuinely excited for anyone to contribute in any way.

    I’m curious how many queries other social network sites use on a single page load. Can you imagine how many servers Facebook must use? Or wordpress.com? Must be pretty intense to manage all that data and traffic.

    Hi snagfly. I’m the author of that plugin. It sounds like the problem is that you activated the bbPress trigger plugin inside of WordPress. As is stated in the readme files, this part of the plugin is only needed if you are running a separate installation of bbPress with BuddyPress 1.0.

    If you are running BuddyPress 1.1+, you can safely delete the file bb-group-forum-subscription.php, keeping and activating only bp-group-forum-subscription.php.

    I’m not sure about a solution to #1. If you don’t have a lot of forum topics, just edit them in bbPress or edit them in the BP Groups forums thanks to the new edit capabilities for site admins.

    But for #2, you could use CSS to override the inline style – I added the following to my custom.css file just as a temporary solution.

    #forums-directory-tags a:nth-child(-n+4)[style]{
    font-size: 24px !important;
    }

    This CSS3 solution keeps my first four tags a standard size and keeps them from overlapping. This won’t work for browsers that don’t support CSS3 but you could simplify the solution above by removing “:nth-child(-n+4)” and still over-ride the inline style to have a standard font-size that would work on just about any browser but IE6.

    #forums-directory-tags a[style]{
    font-size: 18px !important;
    }

    Or, if you must, check out the bp_forums_tag_heat_map function around line 967 in bp-forums-templatetags.php.

    #54552

    I’m going to unstick this topic from the front of the forums since bbPress is now an included part of BuddyPress.

    Anyone wishing to integrate their forums the old fashioned way should still use this topic as a reference since most of the methods here still work.

    @tonyaccardo – We have spent the past 5 or 6 months now working on a new vb/wpmu/bp system and it’s getting close to completion. I have no plans of releasing the software, but I can give you a little insight into why no-one has responded to your request.

    Bottom line:

    It’s a HUGE job. It has taken the coders hundreds of hours of work to complete the project. The amount of code is actually rivaling the core of bp itself. You REALLY have to have a specific reason for wanting to take on wpmu-bp-vb.

    What we’ve built:

    Well I also run a number of very large vb communities, and while vb has ‘blogs’ they suck, and many members asked to have blogs and social networking. The ‘easiest’ solution would have been to simply dump vb for bbpress, and migrate all of the data over to bbpress.

    However bbpress is nowhere near what vb is, not even close. Yeah it’s nice code, but vb has years and years of development behind it and bbpress is just beginning. So for us dumping vb was not an option.

    So we needed a real plan and decided to bridge the programs together, but the bridge is the smallest part of the equation. Not only did I want one registration/session setting for the users, I also wanted auto vb forum creation upon group creation within bp. I also wanted automatic vb forum creation upon new blog creation within wpmu.

    Simply put, if you signup and create a blog, a new vb forum is created behind the scenes that belongs to that blog. The same thing goes if you create a group within bp.

    Well that’s all and good, but as vb is commercial software, there is no way I wanted to have to install new copies of vb for each blog. I wanted to run only one copy of vb, just like bbpress does. That is where the HUGE amount of work came into play.

    Not only did I want each blog to have their own vb forum, but we also had to deal with member roles and forum creation. So we built the system so that ‘technically’ each blog is able to manage every single aspect of vb from styles, to membership, to permissions, heck you name it. As far as the blog owner is concerned, they are running their own full blown copy of vb, fully integrated.

    There are many other things to consider as well. Many of the function names within the programs are the same, so you can’t just call functions from bp within vb. Even including things as simple as your wordpress header within a vb template took a bit of work. You see, wordpress header navigation is dynamic, add a page/category, and you have a new link. Obviously you do not want to have to manually change your header in vb to match wp everytime a navigation button is added, so you have to automate that part. Well the function names are the same in both, so now you have to create your own header nav functions so it stays dynamic. Not hard but still more work.

    If all you are after is bridging wp/vb together, there is a basic bridge script you can use from vb.org. It does not work with wpmu, but can be modded to work. We started out with this route and after making the changes it worked perfectly.

    However, it is designed to use vb for reg/sessions, and this caused some major issues that we had not thought of in the beginning. Think about hosting ‘paid’ blogs on your network, and telling them that their members have to go to another site forum to register, yeah that went over real well. LOL.

    So that is where we are at now. We are rewriting the bridge code to use wpmu reg/sess so that users signup on whatever wpmu blog they come across and they are registered into the entire system (even having the ability for a visitor to signup directly from a sub-blog in wpmu took a bit of custom code which is done). I expect the coders to have this part finished shortly.

    Once that code is finished then we begin work on bringing in the vb posts into the wire and activity streams of bp. There seems to be little to no documentation on doing this within bp so I can imagine it’s gonna be an interesting project.

    We will then begin work on filtering out the pm system within bp and replacing it with the pm system from vb. (I’d rather use bp pm system, but it’s a kiddy toy compared to vb right now, and I don’t care to wait years for bp to catch up).

    We are not touching the core code of either wp, bp, or vb so future upgrades are not going to be a problem. That is another thing you have to really consider.

    Bottom line is, it was a massive job that took months of work, but we’ve mu’d vbulletin and should have the perfect deep integration replacement for bbpress shortly.

    I hope now you can see why you are not getting any responses. Even in it’s ‘simplest’ form, what you are asking is going to take someone hundreds of hours to build, and that’s only if your coders know vb/wpmu/bp code inside and out.

    anyhow, hope it helps.

    ok…well I have been trying for the past couple of hours, just right after I posted this I found the solution..all new members in bbpress are ‘inactive’. The user mapping in bbpress is correct though, so I’m not sure how to fix this (except for manually changing it).

    Hi guys, I’m having the same problems. When I do not add the $bb->bb_xmlrpc_allow_user_switching = true; line to the bb-config file it works, but just for the admin. After adding it, bbpress keeps coming up with the famous ‘There was an error posting that topic.’ notification. Since it’s dificult to debug a message like that I just can’t find out what can be wrong…I just updated the BBPress installation to 1.0.2, but I still have the same problem.

    I hope somebody can help me out, thanks :).
