Here’s what I think you’d have to do:
—
There is a lot of bp-friends code that you’d have to duplicate.
/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-friends/ (entire directory)
/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-friends.php
You’d have to rename each function, class and file for your “enemies” functionality.
Then, you’d have to hack the core as well (or write filters or functions that won’t hack the core):
/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/ (many files in this directory, not all)
Like I said, it’s ambitious. It’s not impossible. But you’d have to test it out.
(I’m not a programmer either… I do a little front-end and a little back-end. I’m not especially good at one particular thing! Hopefully a real programmer can respond and give their input!)
I’ve a WPMU (2.8.2) + Buddpress (1.0.3) installed and am using the default buddypress-home theme for the the main site, domain.com, as well as for another blog created under domain.com, say domain.com/blog.
When I try viewing the Members, Groups list etc., on domain.com it works fine. However, when I try clicking on the “Members”, “Groups” tab on the top of domain.com/blog, all that gets displayed is a blank page with just the “search” box. Further, the “Members” tab always remains highlighted, no matter which tab I click (Members/Groups/Blogs..).
How do I fix this issue? Thank you.
Sorry to see nobodies felt the need to comment on this thread for a week friend. I’m having the same problem trying to figure this out. Without a fairly straightforward way to customize the default site page I’m going to be forced to look at alternatives to WPMU/Buddypress.
I’m sure theres got to be a way – i’ve seen examples of some cool buddypress sites – but my dream of MU and Buddypress being even close to as easy and straightforward as WP is are fading fast. It seems, still, like this set up is very much a patched together affair.
I don’t mind putting in some time…..Every script or combination of scripts has some learning curve. Maybe wordpress (just the blog) has spoiled me with its most excellent documentation and straightforward usage, styling, etc.. but I’ve been having drupal flashbacks for the last 24 hrs since trying to set up a WPMU/BP test site.
Figured it out. Well, it kind of figured itself out. Thanks anyway!
This is surely not a problem with BuddyPress, but with something I did I’m sure. The submenu’s on my site are not dropping. The menu’s are dropping, but, for example, the link to access the dashboard is not available because the menu won’t drop. Has anyone else had this happen?
I can’t track down the problem and any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot for the help in advance.
Roy
There is a bug in WPMU 2.8.2 that will not allow site wide plugins to be deactivated:
https://trac.mu.wordpress.org/ticket/1071
Today I have a news-type website (http://www.techsentry.org) built on the standard WP.org setup. We have categories for different types of posts, pages, etc. We also have a WPMU install (http://blogs.techsentry.org) running separate from the main site, powering our user blogs.
After hearing about the additional community-building features of BuddyPress and how it allows members to engage in more interactions with one another, I would like to move to that platform. However, I am unsure of how I should proceed.
Here are the options I am considering:
- keep the WP blog, ditch current WPMU and set up new BP at http://my.techsentry.org
- migrate current WP blog and current WPMU blogs into a single new install of WPMU with BP
For #1, that still leaves me two separate installs, which will probably be a pain.
If I go with #2, running everything under a single WPMU install, can I still manage my main site content under the root directory? I realize I won’t be able to keep our user blogs under the blogs.techsentry.org subdomain, but I want the main site content permalinks to stay the same as they were originally.
Also, if I want my front end to look much like it does today, can I take advantage of the “community” page from BuddyPress by assigning it to a page under the root?
I appreciate anyone help/feedback you can give me. I am anxious to pull the trigger on this, but need these basic questions answered first.
Thanks.
Any updates on this situation? I am in the same situation as Dansalmon, where I would like to have all member blogs under a subdirectory of their own.
Today we are running a standard WP.org blog at http://www.domain.com and running WPMU to power http://blogs.domain.com in order to achieve this effect, but it means people can potentially have two logins. I would much rather prefer to move to BuddyPress and take advantage of all the other features, but the addresses for user blogs is the only thing that bothers me. I would prefer that they be indicated as such in the URL string.
I am using wpmu 2.8.1, bp 1.0.3, bbpress 1.0.1. I have deep integration and all is working fine.
The problem is that when I want to login on the front page of the forum, I get “page not found” error, and when I refresh or go to any other page after, it shows that I am actually logged in!
On any other page of the forum or buddypress, I can login without any problem, it is just the /forum (front) page with the problem.
I experienced a similar problem as well.
Did you edit a BuddyPress core file using a bpGroups function?
You should let Burt Adsit know of your fix, so maybe he can provide a cleaner solution using his plugin instead of editing the core:

Try adding this to line 161 of /wp-content/mu-plugins/oci_bp_group_forums.php
add_action( 'groups_create_group_step2_save', 'oci_bb_group_updated', 10, 1 );
See if that does the same thing.
This topic mentioned the same issue of not being able to deactivate buddypress 1.0.3 plugin after upgrade. https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/fatal-error-after-upgrading-to-wordpress-mu-282-and-buddypress-103
ok, I had one member with user name “Korhan”, I guess I did this by mistake in the forum profile edit area and could not somehow change it back to “korhan”. So I went inside the database and changed it manually. Posting works now.
I also changed all profile links in forums to buddypress /member/username way, so that there are no 2 places where users play with their profiles but just one and that should be buddypress profile pages.
I know this is going off topic, but here is what I did so that others can use it. I use the looks-like-buddypress theme for my forums:
I changed the logged-in.php file:
<div id="logout-link">
<?php bp_loggedinuser_avatar_thumbnail( 20, 20 ) ?>
<?php bp_loggedinuser_link() ?>
<?php bb_admin_link( 'before= / ' );?>
/ <?php bb_logout_link(); ?>
</div>
Also added the css
#logout-link {
float: right;
}
#logout-link img {
vertical-align: middle;
}
This way the looks are the same as bp
I also changed the sign-up page link to bp’s. I replaced the sign-up button in login-form.php with this:
<input type="button" name="signup-submit" id="signup-submit" value="<?php _e( 'Sign Up', 'buddypress' ) ?>" onclick="location.href='<?php echo bp_signup_page() ?>'" />
Nope, Im afraid there´s not a newer version.
1.1 was coded by Andy himself, and there are no signs that it is going to be updated. He has made clear many times that its up to Buddypress community to continue with the update of Facebook connect plugin.
If I had coding skills, I would have updated it a long time ago, but I am still busy understanding how BP works ! ;-(
Very nice, congratulations !
What about integrating bbPress stats ? For those who have bbP setups might come handy.
I ALready created a ticket (although my english is bad and I not enough of a programmer to narrow down the problem…):
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/865
Make sure you have the themes in the proper locationI haven’t been following these forums too closely recently and I haven’t seen this error, but I went straight up 2.7.1 to 2.8.1 then 2.8.2. try this.. make sure you’re not refreshing a ?action=”*&^^” page.. just the plugins.php, delete out of the mu-plugins folder. refresh.. you should see NO Buddypress. drop it in the regular plugins folder.. refresh and then ‘activate site wide’.
I tried as per your suggestion but it doesn’t work. BuddyPress ver 1.0.3 still cannot be deactivated.
After deleting the entire BuddyPress directory and refreshing the plugins panel, the plugin didn’t shows up (display blank) but the word “Deactivate” is still shown and upon putting the cursor over it, it is “www.mydomain.com/wp-admin/wpmu-sitewide-plugins.php?action=deactivate&plugin=buddypress/bp-loader.php&_wpnonce=1a9adedb1e”
I tried on another domain with an upgrade of wpmu 2.7.1 to 2.8.2 followed by a fresh install of BuddyPress 1.0.3 and the same fatal error happened when I tried to deactivate BuddyPress in plugins panel. I did the same suggested recovery/resolution but the error persists.
Any other approaches I can try? Thanks.
the fbc_get_avatar() error is from the facebook connect… it’s been addressed somewhere else in the forums. ..it’s been fixed. The spam.. the user “LnddMiles” is not just on buddypress sites, so it’s a spambot that looks for open registrations.
You should add a captcha or math problem to your registration page to divert these.
I think that’s very nicely done! simple, effective, 300 lines…. publicly +1, forum +1, the api..maybe just some jquery flot

Hi everyone
I’ve had WordPressMU/BuddyPress installed for several months now. Recently I upgraded to WordPressMU v2.8.2 and BuddyPress v1.0.3. I’ve always had registrations disabled and recently I installed the latest version of Askimet.
Everything has been installed by-the-book and everything has worked perfectly until this morning when I awoke to see that someone had registered with the user name “LnddMiles” – despite registrations being disabled and having Askimet installed.
A Google search quickly showed that this same user has registered on thousands of other BuddyPress sites.
Additionally, I am now getting the following error each time I access my admin center…
Warning: Missing argument 5 for fbc_get_avatar() in /home/azonez/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bp-fbconnect/includes/wp-facebookconnect/fbconnect.php on line 529
What does this mean and what can I do about this?.
Thanks for any help and have a great day!.
– Steve
More specifically, I’m wondering:
- Is it a good idea to add fancy graphs using the Google Maps API (each user would have to use their own API key, naturally)?
- Should there be an option to display all or some of these graphs publicly, that is, not in the administration panel? If so, where and which?
- What more graphs would you like? I’m thinking about adding Wire and Forum stats, good/bad?
using Buddypress as a minor feature in a project and I’m tinkering with the page load times and overall code aesthetics… thinking I want to only load the core and widget (.js/css) files (enqueue_script() in bp-core-cssjs.php) to the head for certain template pages? still dependent on bp for other pages, don’t want to hack the core, don’t want to do it on a template level with wp_head. i searched the mu and wp forums to see if it’s been done for another plugin… has anyone done/seen anything similar and wanna get me started this morning?
In my first stunt ever as a “real” WordPress/BuddyPress plugin developer, I’ve hacked together a simple stats plugin.
It generates the following graphs:
- (all “multiselectbox”, “selectbox”, “checkbox” and “radio” fields have one bar graph each) (Xprofile)
- Most friends (Friends)
- Most group members (Groups)
- Most actions (Activity)
- Most popular component_action (Activity)
It is available in the WordPress plugin directory. Please try it out and come with suggestions for improvement!
delete the entire Buddypress directory, refresh you plugins panel… upload it again, get your BP 1.0.3 themes in place.. refresh plugins.. activate it. i too.. always forget to deactivate plugins for upgrades ;o
I used the WP.MU “Community Start Up” package service and the setup was done 4 days ago.
Today, I upgraded automatically to WPMU 2.8.2 and then automatically to BuddyPress 1.0.3 (without deactivating BuddyPress 1.0.2 – only realized I need to do that after encountering fatal error and found this page http://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/upgrading-from-10x)
Buddypress 1.0.3 appears to be installed, however the plugin can not be deactivated. When I click Deactivate, it says “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Please advise, thank you.
