Will the line contain the word ‘error’?
You need to look at the apache_error_log. Or whatever 1and1 has decided to call the Apache log file.
You do not need to paste the entire contents of that log file in a post. Since this is a new install, what you should do is clear out the log file then recreate the issue. Then go back to the log file and see what errors are reported. List those errors, just one copy of each unique error, here.
I can get to the log files. What am i looking for?
Thanks for your help, by the way.
With what you are experiencing, I would image that there is useful information in your server’s log files. How do you locate the log files?
This is a very old article, but perhaps still applies to 1and1:
http://www.devchunks.com/1and1/1and1-hosting-server-logs/
If that does not help, contact them and ask for assistance in locating your log files.
Also, tried uploading a php.ini file in wp-admin that contained:
memory=20MB
upload_max_filesize = 8M
Same error.

My host is 1and1.
Whenever you have issues with BuddyPress, the best course of action is to distill your setup down to the lowest common denominator. This means switching to the default BP themes (bphome and bpmember) that come with BuddyPress and deactivating all plugins except BP.
What happens then? If you do not have any more issues, then you know it has something to do with your custom theme, one of the plugins, or some combination.
You then start going back up the ladder one step at a time. Switch the default BP themes for your custom themes. Does the problem return? It not, then is has to do with your plugins. Activate one plugin at a time until the issue returns.

Hi everybody
Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately, as i mentioned, there isnt anything relevant in the buddypress submenu in wpmu.All i have is general settings, component setup and forums setup. And even in component setup, i dont have extended profiles, only activity streams, blog tracking, bbpress forums, friends, groups, private messaging. Why am i missing some of the fields you mention?I installed bp and wpmu 3 times already and its always the same.Are there some missing files or something?
Edit: yeah i went through and somehow i have missing files and directories. weird..
thanks
When I try to click on either “Activate” or “Site wide activate” for the BP-FBConnect plugin I get a white screen and I am preventing from using BuddyPress until I delete the plugins’ folder.
It freezes at this URL:
http://domain.com/wp-admin/plugins.php?action=activate&plugin=bp-fbconnect%2Fbp-fbconnect.php&_wpnonce=dd08462b40
I’d love to be able to use FB-Connect… is there a stable version?
I just uploaded the entire buddypress folder to plugins directory. Activated BuddyPress and not ANY page on my site renders as a white page.
Any ideas?
I am trying to install buddypress 1.0.2 to my WPMu 2.7.1 site.
I downloaded the zip file.
I tried to install using the installer on the admin panel. It failed. I tried uploading the zipped file using the installer on the admin panel. It failed.
I have no interest in trying to fix the browser plugin installer.
I just want to upload the files and folders to the right directories on my WPMu installation. The instructions in the downloaded readme file are woefully not adequate. It says to plug the plugin files in the plugins/buddypress director. Please tell me which files and while folders this refers to.
If these DETAILED instructions exist on this site, point it out, please.
Thanks for any assistance that can be provided.
Hey – I’m somewhat of a noob with all this but fairly technically adept and have been doing OK. I have installed events via your directions and also uninstalled (deleted with the plugin delete utility) and installed again with the new “browser auto install of zip files” feature. It looks like all functionality is there except for when you go to Events on the pull down menu for the user – you get “Not Found / No Access The page you are looking for either does not exist, or you do not have the permissions to access it.” I’ve been poking through the files and didn’t see any in the mu-plugins directory but when I added the files as instructed, I got that big gnarly “cannot redeclare events” error message that was a few posts back..This is a killer plugin that I’m excited about..can you help? My environment is latest versions of wpmu and buddypress as installed in the last few days. I’m running a test environment with the “buddydress” theme that incorporates the same look and feel for wp and bp..thanks in advance for your help.

To add additional profile fields, you need to navigate to the BuddyPress submenu grouping in WPMU’s backend. If BuddyPress is installed and activated, this submenu group is found at the very bottom of the menu column.
So, go to
BuddyPress > Profile Field Setup
and set up the additional fields you want.
By default, when you activate BuddyPress, all of its components are activated. To selectively disable a component, you go to
BuddyPress > Component Setup
You need to log into WPMU’s backend as site admin ( /wp-login.php), and then go to
Site Admin > Options > Allow new registrations
and set the options you want.
Also I am unable to create an extended profile like shown in some of the demos. It only allows me change the “base” and avatar. I can’t put birthday, location, etc.

Hey gang,
Has a plugin be created that would prevent a user to completely registering their account on a buddypress site until an admin has approved that user’s registration? I have a site that is meant for a small group of freinds to communicate and share on the buddypress portion of the site while having their blogs available to the world. However I would like to limit access to the site to only those in my community. It would be great to have an approval area in the dashboard that showed pending registrations with information such as the user’s name, username, blog name, and email address so that an admin can verify that person is a known community member and not just a spammer or unwanted outsider.
Great work to everyone that has contributed!!!
Thanks,
Somecallmemike
We exactly had the same question asked before.
You need to setup components from wp-admin’s buddypress menu on the left.

Hi
I just installed buddypress v102 but i’m struggling with a lot of things and i cant seem to find relevant documentation. My question is about extended profiles, which doesnt seem to be there. Even basic actions like uploading avatar does not appear in the profile page. Do i have to explicitly turn ext. prof. on and from where? There isnt anything relevant in the buddypress component setup. Thanks
Hello. I am new to BuddyPress and would like some help getting a few things figured out.
I recently updated the newest version of BP on 06/28/09 and started setting it up. I noticed however that when I tried to create a dummy account to see how things worked out it gave me a statement which read “Registration has been disable”.
I tried going through the backend and couldn’t find anything that would allow me to enable registration. I don’t have any widgets installed other than what came with the BP download.
Also I am unable to create an extended profile like shown in some of the demos. It only allows me change the “base” and avatar. I can’t put birthday, location, etc.
If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Lo all.
If you have a WPMU 2.8 trunk site running BuddyPress 1.0.2 or trunk, I’d appreciate if you would test a plugin I am working on; it’s called Draggables and you can download it here.
It’ll only work on your i.e. http://example.com/members/admin/ page. Drag the column headings (“My Activity”, “My Friends” etc) around. Only tested on Safari 4 and very briefly in Firefox 3, both on OS X.
If anyone knows some jquery/javascript, please take a look in the .js file in the archive; I’m stuck with a problem and any pointers would be appreciated.

Buddypress 1.0.2 just installed and the same issue exists please any help would be appreciated
If anyone is looking to hack the adminbar so that when users log in, they stay on the current blog they’re on, just edit the bp-core-adminbar.php file and change the reference to $bp->root_domain, under the “log in and sign up links” section, to $current_blog. Also, I took out the redirect as well. So, my login widget now looks like this:
// **** "Log In" and "Sign Up" links (Visible when not logged in) ********
function bp_adminbar_login_menu() {
global $bp;
if ( !is_user_logged_in() ) {
echo '<li class="bp-login no-arrow"><a href="' . $current_blog . '/wp-login.php">' . __( 'Log In', 'buddypress' ) . '</a></li>';
// Show "Sign Up" link if registrations are allowed
if ( get_site_option( 'registration' ) != 'none' ) {
echo '<li class="bp-signup no-arrow"><a href="' . bp_signup_page(false) . '">' . __( 'Sign Up', 'buddypress' ) . '</a></li>';
}
}
}
Sure thing. I was originally scared off by a “forbidden” message from trac, but discovered that I simply needed to log in there using my buddypress.org credentials.
