The template pack approach is all but redundant now with the imminent release of BP 1.7 which will work with any theme without having to go through the template pack process – you will likely not have performed the third step where you need to match the copied BP files now in your theme to your themes standard markup structure.

So if you’re just starting to build your site please do so with the beta release of 1.7 more than likely by the time you’re ready 1.7 RC t will be ready and even if not the beta is very stable and won’t change much other than to fix any little bugs found.

    Great minds… 🙂

I think we should be de-emphasing a difference between group and site; BuddyPress supports just forums, and we add that if people want to add a tab to their groups, that they need to click a button inside bbPress.

@djpaul I have updated the forums info last Jan 3, 2013 using bbPress plugin only -> see forums component listed at https://codex.buddypress.org/component/forums/ onto the page https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/ Just need to complete Group Forums only section – have some questions there.

Your site is in maintenance mode, so we can’t see it. Further more, your question is best posted to bbPress.org as this element is part of bbPress, not BuddyPress 🙂

I have the same issue and have tried a bunch of different options. Most of the plugins that do this are old and don’t really work. I tried editing some of my php but without success.

Thank you for that GordonRe. I will be more detailed from now and on. At the time, i am using WordPress3.5.1 i have downloaded the buddypress 1.7 beta version with the elegantthemes-lucid. I have looked at some of the links you have mentioned and I will start to read these documents more…as I learn more.

    1. At the time, I am seeing that the installation is fine but I am getting widgets on the bottom of the screen. I would like to remove these widgets. Widgets in page

    2. When i click on the “activation” page, it prompts me to enter my activation key…
    activation page

    3. As of now, i am not seeing Buddypress on the home page, but i would like to add a community tab that will lead to all the buddy press features. Please see illustration. Is there a way to do this?
    Community Tab

I know I am asking for a lot at once but I would appreciate any help with any of the above!

    Thank you! =)

    Previous may have mislead:

IN addition to Dashboard/Settings/Buddypress there ought to be

    Dashboards/BuddyPress and so

Dashboard/BuddyPress/xxx is also possibl; perhaps that’s where you expected Courseware to be – but I don’t see that it’s a problem if it is at Settings/Courseware if you have access to the settings you need.

    HI

The correct place for the BuddyPress settings menu is Dashboards/Setting/BuddyPress

It may have been somewhere else in much earlier versions.

I don’t know anything about Courseware but I don’t see how it could be further nested under BuddyPress in the Dashboard – I’ve never seen any WP settings file except immediately under settings.

It would be up to the builder of the Courseware plug in to decide where to put it but the options would seem to my unsophisticated eyes to be Dashboard/ or Dashboard/Settings/

    Hi
Having been a newby 6 months ago and having set up a BP installation a couple of times now with a few months in between I would say that setting up Buddy Press involves following the instructions VERY carefully. BP 1.7 makes some of that easier but it is a touch more involved than installing and configuring a typical WP theme.

Your post above is not very clear about what is and isn’t working. For the more technie guys to help you you should also provide your WP version, the theme you are using and your URL.

One thing to check is if you have turned on the components that you need to do the things you want (given that BP 1.7 intstal leaves a good few of them turned off for the good reason that not everyone needs them).

Look at the topics on this page to see if one addresses your problem: https://codex.buddypress.org/version/1-7/

Sorry I can’t be more specific but a. I’m not an expert and b. you haven’t described in enough detail what you did, what you expected to see and what you aren’t seeing.

Sorry this is not too much help.

Two very important things as I am testing 1.7 but not finding

1 . How do I let a site member block another site member from posting to him/ seeing her profile and activities?

    2. How do a site member makes her blog post / photo viewable to a friend/friends only?

    3. How to post comment to a blog post from activity ( see oxwall.org) ?

@carmeetsroad Really? I would have paid four times that. I would pay $1,000 for a license to download WordPress and activate it. I think it came down from Heaven when no one was looking. 🙂 I enjoy learning WordPress and teaching myself code, but I can appreciate fine craftsmanship. JMHO I want to experience BuddyPress without worrying that something I coded wrong or that my theme is hindering it.

    Peace.

Does anyone know if there is anything pretty similar to BuddyPress Courseware? I like the courseware concept. What are my options with BuddyPress and Courseware to get them running together?

I had BuddyPress 1.6.4 installed and Courseware 0.9.7 installed and I had the same thing happen to me that I’ve been trying to fix. I wonder since Courseware says 1.6 it MEANS 1.6 capatible?

What did you do differently? I am very interested in knowing. To be honest, everything looks the same as I had it with BuddyPress. I just didn’t know what to expect as far as functionality. I’m still not seeing BuddyPress under the Dashboard which is the problem I was having.

I may need to go backwards in versions to get to where I need to be. Then it seems it is going to be a Theme incompatibility issue. I think…

@Chouf1 Thanks for your continued efforts.

I can confirm that I have followed the instructions and the video I mentioned is still very much in-line/tune with instructions you linked. Trust me, I have tried ‘ever’ which way in battle against this issue.

I also understand the slug errors that can arise from their conflicts.

I have stated in my opening post that this is a current/latest WP MU installation – It stands to reason BP will be the same.

I did mention much more in my first post: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/full-forum-url-string-in-activity-feed/ Unfortunately, I felt it necessary to open this thread due to that one drifting off topic and a lack of responses. (This thread began due to same issues I keep/currently having – When I tried to edit out all BP SQL tables for a fresh install, that caused just further issues)

My main problem here simply lies with a lack of edit-ability with site-wide forum posts, subscribed e-mails not being sent and registration troubles. Group forums function, but don’t mail.

Other than that, all is well. The purpose of my post is really all about these issues and trying to break down every aspect in my own head and the processes that leads to these problems arising. I really have no idea.

I have WPMU’s running fine on this server and I have WPBP sites running fine too, this really is just a WPMU  BP bbP issue I can’t get my head round.

    Thanks again.

    @mercime

Thanks. I opted for option 2. For the benefit of others, here’s what I did.

    (This was a new install)

Deactivated and deleted BP and BP compatibility opting to remove files.
Removed BP folders from child theme and header-bubbypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php. Thus making a clean start.

    Installed new BP beta.

Theme worked perfectly without any tweaking. So far no issues.

    Many thanks.

@flyveren Okay, I will do as you suggest. I did look around in my db and I couldn’t differentiate the buddypress tables from the rest of the tables. I’m going to read up on this.

A fella like me that’s new at all of this, I don’t need the Beta version. I have successfully re-installed 1.6.4 and everything is working great. I really like this BuddyBoss theme. My mother is going to like it, too, when she sees it.

I’m glad to hear that you have this theme as well. If I have any questions, I will send you a mention.

I do have one concern that although everything is fine now, when it comes time to upgrade to the newest BP version when that time comes, that everything will go as planned. I think there’s something to be said for allowing WordPress the chance to install plugins and themes on its own instead of using FileZilla. I would imagine the final version of BP will be slimmed down to clear entry into WP. Either that or WP will update just prior and relax the upload limitation a bit and allow a slightly bigger BP folder to come up and install.

I’m going to enjoy my new theme and get building my social site. If you, or anyone, thinks I should clear those tables and reload 1.6.4, please let me know. I’m not afraid to try it. If you think the tables are fine — because my site is running fine — I’ll leave then alone. I just hope when the day comes to upgrade that I’ll be okay. By then, I’ll have a great deal of time invested in my site.

Thanks for taking the time and helping!

    Kevin

Does one enable define ( ‘bp_enable_multiblog’ true ) prior to BP installation or directly afterward, or does it not matter.

Doesn’t matter. BP is a plugin who went on a single or on a network enabled WP install. bbPress also.

Should one network enable BP & bbPress upon installation or not?

see previous answer. If your network is activated, you see under each installed plugin in your network admin the activation link who says “network activate”. Remeber also that with network activated, you have two dashboard as super-admin. One is your main blog and a single WP admin, the other one is the network admin where your BP and bbPress plugins are/should be installed.

I have followed The Definitive Guide To BuddyPress & bbPress Configuration

This (good) tutorial was updated for bbPress 2.2+ and BuddyPress 1.6.1+ But time and things changes rapidly on the WP Planet….

Actually we have 1.6.4 and we are close to 1.7 ! It’s better you read here:
    https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/
Be aware with the group forum page slug and the bbP plugin forum page slug – this is really important.

Before you came accross with new questions, can you please indicate your BP/WP version and your main blog theme name & version ? Or much better, your site url ?

I would backup you db and then delete the buddypress tables. Delete the files and upload them all over.. before trying to aktivate agian.

I would also go for the stable version 😉 and not the beta version
