It’s hard to answer this one, but if you remember to a word or a sentence from the thread you found earlier, you can try to use google operators to find it.
example google search: site:Buddypress.org “crop image”
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=site%3ABuddypress.org+%22crop+image%22
I have erliar started a thread in this forum about that i can’t crop profile images.

After a while I found an answer in the forum that solved the problem. My problem now is that I can’t find the answer in the forum. After a computer crash, I desperately need to find the answer to that problem again. I just needed to change a setting in my page’s admin backend, but it is impossible for me to find the setting.
Please, can anyone help me?
Best regards

Hi andhi,
Are you able to crop with just BuddyPress loaded and with a default theme such as 2017?
Now I can change profile picture, but I can not crop it
@samyliu thank you so much for posting this. I was not able to crop the uploaded Avatar file for my buddy press groups. I would upload a jpg file and it was be the size of a pin head.
I went in to Jetpack plugin settings and turned off load lazy images and it fixed it for me to be able to upload and crop the image.
Many questions about issue with updating group Avatar. I discover something and hope this will stop you from starching your head.
I found that when Jetpack Lazy image is activate, group avatar/photo cannot be shown and cannot crop image at all. Turned off Jetpack Lazy image option, crop image works alright, but upload always error.
I finally de-activate JetPack to be able to update my group Avatar.
Could you please, help to solve this issue. It’s Ok, when uploading avatar via desktop, but when loading avatar via mobile – cropping image is very poor quality.

After some testing we were able to reproduce the issue and we determined that this is an issue with BuddyPress, as this issue seems to happen with the default Twenty Nineteen theme as well. So unfortunately we cannot help you resolve this as we have no control over the way BuddyPress handles avatar uploads on mobile.
To go further, we invite you to contact BuddyPress support about this issue:
Thank you.
Is there any way that you can upload the profile image without having to crop it ? for example a automatically resized or something like that? I lose many users who try to register from the mobile phone just in this step.
Hi @henrywright,
I’m using “Buddypress Upload Avatar Ajax” (Version 1.0.1) and Buddypress (Version 4.1.0).
Since upload avatar plugin was not updated I’m experiencing the same problem as @chavodbharat has mentioned – I’m getting “There was a problem cropping your avatar, please try uploading it again” error.
I tried what he has suggested (edit directly wp-content\plugins\buddypress\bp-core\classes\class-bp-attachment-avatar.php) and I also tried your snippet, but I’m still getting the same problem.
Does something changed in latests Buddypress versions?
Quite a few of my users also wish to be able to crop their cover photos. Is there custom code I can add to allow users to do this? I haven’t found it on any of the forum posts so far and most are over a year old. This seems to be the most recent.
For those searching, here’s the codex of cover images (group and profile) and tells you how to customize the image size that you will accept for this area, but still not telling you how to allow cropping.

I’m on Version 4.1.0
Hello,
Hoping someone might be able to help me. I’m not able to get the avatar upload feature to work on any of my sites, it does the same thing on all of them, shows a small black box where the image uploads into and then only allows to crop a tiny part of the image resulting in very bad looking corner of an avatar.. Any help would be very much appreciated.
One of the pages I have the error on is: http://dev-greentv.pantheonsite.io/members/jaymcdonough/profile/change-avatar/ feel free to sign up to see the error on the profile that is created.
I’m using WordPress 5.0.2 and BuddyPress 4.1.0

Hi guys
I am trying to upload an avatar or profile pic in a group and the image is not appearing for cropping…I have tried it on a couple of themes and all that is coming up is 1px x 1px pic.
Can you help?
Krissmania
Thanks in advance
Kriss 🙂
this may be old but ive just ran into similar issue, when uploading a profile pic you get to crop but you cant see anything, just a tiny black blob on the screen.
Might be an idea to raise this as a feature request on Trac – https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ Maybe they can set the cropping window to max size as a solution?
Thank you. The problem is not in my understanding.
Because the professionals (creators of the theme) tell that the problem in buddypress core.
Mobile view. Small avatar size in cropping. Not correct button.
I got it to work! I have another question though, when the user goes to their profile page and tries to add their avatar picture, it crops the image without showing it.. how can I disable that?

Hi !
In my site if anyone want to upload avatar for their Buddy Press profile after uploading it’s preview not shown. So, without showing a preview they can’t crop.
Regards
I have the same issue, and have tried all the suggested solutions with no luck.
The issue occurs randomly, you can’t detect what is causing it. I have a suspicion it is the order plugins are installed but this is impossible to test with 30 plugins or more.
This is how it looks:

Hi, got the same problem, cannot upload picture on profile, crop doesn’t work and displays an error. I have imageMagick enabled. I read the above disabling plugins/changing theme but really… what is that? Profile photo upload used to work and now it is broken, the problem must be in BuddyPress no? I am using BuddyPress 3.1.0.
Also why do I have to crop the image? I upload a square picture, I would expect the backend to get this and do what it has to do with it, why asking me to crop??
I used a shorter name.. it worked.
does anyone know if there is a way to provide a link to the photo – just like it takes it from Gravatar.. can we provide a link from another picture to be able to accept it as Profile Photo
I am thinking this way we can avoid cropping GIF and be able to use GIF as profile photo
any help on this
?
I would wager that a plugin is conflicting with the image cropper size.
Can you try deactivating all your plugins except BuddyPress to see if the image cropper is the correct size? Afterwards, if the image cropper is indeed the correct size, can you activate each plugin one-by-one to determine which plugin is causing the tiny image cropper and let us know which one it is?
Hello Keymaster and y’all, I tried changing the theme to WP Twenty fifteen but I still got the same issue when I crop profile images… I get the image handles close together like a bold dot and when I try to expand the handles with the arrow handle the image size and handles get reduced to a tiny dot. Even the loader looks different with the upload button to the side instead of in the middle.
