MemberThanks!
I understand the reasoning behind having it only on the last page, but I think the confusion that may result is a bigger factor than people not reading to the end before posting.

KeymasterThis is a template issue.
Open up your /wp-content/themes/YOUR-THEME/groups/single/forum/topic.php template.
Look for this line:
` `And delete it.
Also delete the corresponding “ line.

MemberI had the same issue. I found BP hadn’t created bb-config.php at root directory. I just created it and it worked fine.
You have to define some lines like wp-config.php:
define( ‘BBDB_NAME’, ‘dbname’ );
define( ‘BBDB_USER’, ‘dbuser’ );
define( ‘BBDB_PASSWORD’, ‘dbpass’ );
define( ‘BBDB_HOST’, ‘dbhost’ );
define( ‘BBDB_NAME’, ‘myGLOBALDB’ );
$bb_table_prefix = ‘wp_bb_’;
$bb->custom_user_table = ‘wp_users’;
$bb->custom_user_meta_table = ‘wp_usermeta’;I also had to copy those following lines from wp-config.php:
define(‘AUTH_KEY’,”);
define(‘SECURE_AUTH_KEY’, ”);
define(‘LOGGED_IN_KEY’, ”);
define(‘NONCE_KEY’, ”);
define(‘AUTH_SALT’, ”);
define(‘SECURE_AUTH_SALT’, ”);
define(‘LOGGED_IN_SALT’, ”);
define(‘NONCE_SALT’, ”);January 8, 2012 at 4:34 pm #127660In reply to: Problems with site wide forums

Participant@ChrisClayton — Thanks for pointing that out! Yeah that was just bad wording on my part. Originally I should have wrote:
“you SHOULD disable the Discussion Forums component” vs “you need…”
Sorry for the confusing wording!

Anyway, yeah I understand you can run both at the same time. I’m just saying if you’re not using Group forums, then it’s less hassle to simply disable that component. And that it should be included in the codex to only tick the Discussion component if you’re going to be using Group forums .

@ChrisClayton
Participant@filmoreha – I’m slightly confused,
“I think the codex needs to be updated to say that if you’re only using Site Wide Forums, you need to disable the Discussion Forums component since this is meant for Groups integration.”
As @djpaul said, you dont NEED to disable the group forum component… to have both running at the same time you simply need to ensure their not fighting with each other by ensuring that one of the slugs have been changed.
“Yes I understand you can map the forum’s component to a different page or change the bbPress settings away from “forums” but that isn’t necessary if you ONLY want site wide forums. It’s just easier to disable the Discussion Forum component in BuddyPress settings since that only affects Group Forums.”
This is where i’m confused. Before, you mentioned (or implied?) that the forum component is required to be disabled inorder to use the sitewide forum, but now your stating that you disabled it because of simplicity?
Did i get read this thread the wrong way? Could you clarify what you mean, as i think i ended up in the wrong street…

@isisathletics if all you want are site wide forums, then first turn off the Discussion Forum component in BuddyPress settings since this option is for group forums, then continue with site wide forum installation.

@mercime
Participant-bbPress has been a stand-alone forum software for many years and there is still a stand-alone version to date. Not sure how long the stand-alone version will be supported though.
– bbPress the WP plugin came about with JJJ involvement. Stable version rolled out sometime WP 3.2.1 and it has been made compatible with BuddyPress 1.5
– BuddyPress uses internal (fork of the standalone) bbPress as forums for groups since version 1.0 stable and now you can also install bbPress 2.0.2 as the sitewide forums. https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/
– There are plans to migrate the forums for groups to the sitewide forums sometime soon.You’re not likely to lose any forum posts. Always suscribe to backup backup backup database and server files. I would suggest that you set up a test installation ideally with the same server configuration as your current site is in and install WP and bbPress, import database, When you’ve got that going, install BuddyPress. https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/
January 7, 2012 at 2:49 am #127571r-a-y
KeymasterNot sure. You might want to bring it up with the authors of the plugin here:
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-group-email-subscription/forum/You might also want to try WP Better Emails about making WP emails HTML-compatible:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-better-emails/Bonus is it allows you to style the email template. Not sure how that gels with the digests in the Group Email Subscription plugin.

Successful installation of forums for groups would create a bb-config.php file at level where your wp-config.php is located. Double-check that the database information in the bb-config.php file is correct. If not, correct the information and run the forums for groups again. Also check that there are 7 new bbPress tables created in your database, they should be there.

MemberOk, I figured out some of it on my own. If anyone else runs into trouble setting up the multisite blogging (i.e. creating a network), the answer is that you need to set up the network on WordPress first, then set up BuddyPress. Here’s a link to the WP instructions: https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network
As for why my forums tab isn’t appearing, I still haven’t solved that one. If anyone has suggestions, I’d appreciate it.

ParticipantI didn’t find one so far. Thought somebody here should now it as it should be somewhat often used in communities… that’s at least what i thought

Sidenote: any chance to get a notification when someone answers my forum posts here?

@mercime
ParticipantBuddyPress works with bbPress – same Lead Developer for both, JohnJamesJacoby. You don’t need to migrate anything. What kind of bbPress installation do you have? The stand-alone bbPress or bbPress 2.0+ the plugin? You should migrate stand-alone bbPress to bbPress the plugin first https://bbpress.org/forums/

MemberOkay – Paul, I have read what you have said here before, but I could not get sitewide forums to work that way. I set the slug to another page, but no forums showed on that page, even though I had installed them and set up several. Could you give me a bit more of a step by step on the changing of the base slug in the bbPress settings? I want ONLY sitewide forums – have no need for forums within a group. Thanks!

ParticipantI too am having similar problems since upgrading to BP 1.5.. I have a WP 3.3 setup using BP 1.5.2 in a mulitsite ENABLED platform. Sometimes the links work properly…but in other areas of the network, links don’t.
Background – the ‘main’ site in our multisite platform is called “networkit.com”. One of our subsites is “tvhra” found at networkit.com/tvhra
Overall, links seem to work fine within that site when linking to member profiles, activity, forum topics, etc….all good.
However, from the main site (and i’m signed in as the site admin) – BP members section (found here http://www.networkit.com/community/members/ ) – if I click on a member name, such as “Betty Kidd” who signed up originally on the networkit.com/tvhra blog site, her link tries to go to: http://www.networkit.com/community/members/bkidd/ – instead it just refreshs back to the designated home page for networkit.com
The url is wrong…should be going to http://www.networkit.com/tvhra/our-community/members/bkidd/
Note that in the main site, all BP components are under parent page “community’, but in the subsite, the BP components are under parent page “our-community”…don’t think that’s the problem, but thought I’d point it out.
Any thoughts on why this is acting this way and what I need to do to fix the problem? Much thanks.

ParticipantAs leader of this project, you have a difficult role. Lots of people have complaints. Many have merit and many don’t. Whether they have merit or not, every complaint is *real* to the complainer.
You have put a huge part of your life into BuddyPress, so its hard not to take complaints personally. At the same time, you have people who develop plugins which they have invested a huge part of their life into, so its hard for them not to take it personally when they feel their complaints are discounted.
This project is a community of human beings all working their asses off. As leader of the community you must be the most tempered, the most humble, the most gracious. I feel that sometimes you react in a bit of a combative way, instead of trying to diffuse things and let a healthy debate ensue. This leads to lots of frustration in the people which the project depends on for its life.
I am thankful for all of the hard work you put into the project, and without you the project would not be where it is today. Don’t tear it all down by alienating people who have made large (or small for that matter) contributions over the past years.

KeymasterThat’s not true. You need to either map the Forums component to a page with a slug other than “forums”, or change the base slug in the bbPress settings away from “forums”.
