ParticipantOur moderators recommend to focus here for buddypress and wpmu forums for wpmu. Buddypress doesn’t provide blog functions, it doesn’t provide user management, etc, etc, etc…
It’s recommended that you read documents carefully and understand the differences. So people here can focus on spending more time answering real problems than problems that could simply be answered on wpmu forum.
I understand your frustrations, but please respect all of us, both wpmu forum and buddypress forum.

ParticipantPlease note that this forum should only be used for buddypress matters. Post wpmu problems on wpmu forum.

ParticipantBut that did not work for me. And I need the events plugin more than a global forum. I was concerned more with a link taking someone to a page that does not work so I just disabled the global forum option.

ParticipantHi,Milan suggested code is not working on latest buddypress install. it is giving following fatal error
Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_forums_get_topics()
Please suggest the alternative if any. thanks.

ParticipantGreat find!
Yeah, I want group events, group forums, etc, AND I want the main links in the default BP install to work.
I hope, like you, that the events plugin author can get some time to make that into a great plugin! Not that it isn’t already, it just needs some debugging and I hope the author gets time to do that.

Participanthi there
well,so your subdomain style issue is solved.
For the random non existing subdomain behavior is expected by wpmu.since you are using buddypress default theme ,so you will not be able to see wp-signup.php and it is one of the most discussed topic here in forum.just search it.
If you are trying to create forums (as you may be thinking of standalone forum in bbpress),this is not implemented in that way in buddypress. In buddypress ,the bbpress (internal integration) is used for creating forums with groups and they do not have a separate admin. You can enable forum from group admin screen for a particular group.
As far as I know and my experiences with shared hosting, you won’t be able to install wordpress mu on addon domains. If you are able to install wpmu on addon domain ,then buddypress should work without any problem.

InactiveOk, it looks like it’s working after I did http://kb.siteground.com/article/How_to_enable_wildcard_subdomains.html
But then I now have a small issue. When I type in some random subdomain.mydomain.com it’s taking me to http://mydomain.com/wp-signup.php?new=subdomain but all blank!
What kind of a configuration did I miss? Also, I really have no idea hopw the bbForum works, I click on the “forum” and just can’t find a link to open up a new forum

Thanks a lot Brajesh! However, can you tell me how to uninstall the forum I have installed using BuddyPress and do a clean bbForum install and integrate them?
Also, one more big question
Let’s say I have a cPanel account, and have ability to Add On Domains. Say, I want my to install something like Joomla in my /public_html and then add a domain.com which means I also will have domain.com folder inside /public_html right? Can I install BuddyPress that way? Will it work just fine?

KeymasterMy unofficial opinion (which is subject to change at any point) is that it’s a great idea if you and your audience are okay with you not hosting that data on your server.
I’m selfish, so I like to have control over everything so I can take responsibility for it if I break it. I also like to be able to dive right in and fix a problem if something happens instead of making a telephone call or sending an email.
At the end of the day BuddyPress will have its own media management eventually, and BP developers can choose to use the built in one, or something like Kaltura. It’s the same as outsourcing your comments or forums to another service. If you trust the provider and it does what you need, then there’s no reason not to use it.

ParticipantSome form of media manager/gallery is a future BuddyPress feature. Until that is made available, you will have to look to 3rd-party solutions.
Just be aware of the issue of licensing when using Kaltura. Although Kaltura.org is self-described as open source video, and in fact its component code is licensed under GPL3, when you use the hosted solution–that is you are not storing your users’ media on your own server but instead on a Kaltura Media Network server–then all of your users’ content is automatically made available under the Creative Commons 3.0 license. See this Kaltura forum thread:
What does this mean? Well, it means you better clearly state to all your members that anything they upload via your site will automatically get licensed under CC 3.0. This means it will be freely available to anyone else to see and to use as they see fit within the CC licensing specifications.
That may not seem like a big deal to you if you are a fan of CC, but you should not assume that all your members will think the same way or necessarily want their content to be made available for free use.
Thankfully, there is a solution. If your using the self-hosted version of Kaltura.org–Kaltura Community Edition (CE)–then you can set the licensing rights for all member-submitted content. This means you can effectively control the privacy of your members’ content if that is important to you, your site, and your members.
If you choose to use Kaltura CE for your site, then you will need to make sure that you have sufficient storage and bandwidth to meet the needs of your site. Also, I have no idea of what kind of tech support Kaltura offers users of the CE version.
Finally, Kaltura is a for-profit company who is freely offering an open source media hosting solution via their kaltura.org site. They do offer premium services as well. So, if you have the budget, you can purchase a premium account to make all your users’ content private. At least that is what was indicated in the thread response in the first link above. You can visit http://corp.kaltura.com/solutions/video_solution for more information.
Note: look at the footer on the above Kaltura link to see how they handle the CC issue. I would argue that you would also want to make the CC issue very clear in any TOS and actually right under any media “Upload” link.

ParticipantIs it possible to use Kaltura in groups and other components if needed.
There must be a way to implement kaltura in other components so people are able to develop based on the kaltura plugin. Similar to the wire, forum components and so on.

chrisk2020
ParticipantHi,
I’m getting the same 500 error on activation of buddypress plugin. I’m not hosted on 1and1! I’ve checked file permissions as that was the suggestion of my host.
I’m on WPMU 2.8.5.2 and trying BP 1.1.2 I’ve been into php.ini and allocated 64mb memory as per other instructions on the forums.
my error log shows:
php-script: line 8: 13003 Segmentation fault
Premature end of script headers: php-script,
deleting the buddypress folder means that th MU site works again.
I’m stumped as I have installed previous versions of MU and BP on this domain/ server without problems. (it’s my development server) Any other suggestions? my host couldn’t think of anything beyond the permissions…

MrMaz
Participant@Bowe: Thanks, I put a ton of work into it!
@ Erich73: Originally I had that idea, but my site has 100s of groups and I could not come up with an easy way to quickly select which group(s) to associate with the link. In the future I plan to add a feature where you can “tag” a link with a group so they it can be associated in that way. Either way, I have plans for a lot of Link/Group/Forum synergy.
@Chouf1: According to the WordPress.org docs a .pot file is supposed to be generated automatically, but I appears that it wasn’t. I will make sure there is a .pot file in the next release. In the meantime if you want to generate your own, the text domain is ‘buddypress-links’
Thanks for the feedback everybody!

Participantawesome plug-in !
great job !
question:
is it possible to have the “link categories” the same as the “Groups” ?
so literally having “Links” asscoiated to each Group, same as we have a Forum associated to each Group ?
November 5, 2009 at 4:00 pm #55993abcde666
Participantguys:
keep it simple !
1)
if you talk about a “Dashboard”, then we are talking about the very ugly and un-handy Dashboard-interface which we do have currently for users writing their Blogs, etc.
I have actually disabled my Dashboard because this interface is just too complicated for a normal user not experienced with WP.
2) Friends:
as said: we do have the tabs “Groups”, “Members”, “Blogs”, “Forums” (some people will have “Events”, etc.).
Just make a simple tab named “Friends” and put all the friends information into this, like:
– “all friends currently online”
– “newest friends online”
– “most active friends online”
– “most popular friends online”
– “friend online since xx minutes”
– “friends status updates”
– etc.
3) Members:
for the information about “Members” which are not friends, we do have the tab named “Members” already. Put all the “Members” information into this page, like:
– “all members currently online”
– “newest members online”
– “most active members online”
– “most popular members online”
– “member online since xx minutes”
– “member status updates”
– etc.
4)
for the “Site Wide Activity” filters, we should have:
– Members
– Friends
– Blogs
– Groups
– Profile
– Status
– Events
5)

ParticipantI believe that all update functions don’t work perfectly in buddypress, just like the “last active” in this forum. It says you were last active 4 days ago, but you just posted a topic 10 minutes ago. Probably it’s the same with the other functions.
Or perhaps it’s just a bug..
November 5, 2009 at 1:28 pm #5597521cdb
Participant@Bpisimone: Don’t we have that already? Check testbp.org, log into your account and check “Activity” -> “My Friends”
AJAX live updating of site wide activity stream is on the roadmap for BP 1.4 (https://buddypress.org/about/roadmap/)
What i think would be really helpful for users is some kind of “Dashboard” component that appears as your landing page when you are logged in. It should include everything that is interesting for you and you normally would check manually, including:
– Last activities of your friends
– Your friends that are actually online
– Latest status updates of your friends
– Newest activities of groups that you are a member of
– Latest replies to your forum posts.
– Your last recieved messages
– A field where you can update YOUR status.
That would give an overview of nearly everything thats going on. A place where everything is aggregated. I’ll bet users would love this page.
