    If you are using the bp-default theme —

    All you have to do is login, visit someone’s profile, and the send message buttons are there

    Thanks once again Hugo, you always have the solution!

    I was doing the sort of digging you describe yesterday in fact and was able to find out how to add a “Follow” button which may interest users of Andy’s plugin BuddyPress Followers:

    bp_follow_add_follow_button( bp_displayed_user_id() );

    bp_member_add_friend_button() you would find that by looking in the bp-friends-tamplate.php and to find it was in that file meant looking at the members loop to see how the action buttons are handled and tracing the do_action handle back to that template file you’ll then realise ‘bp_member_add_friend_button()’ echoes bp_get_add_friend_button() with passed args so you then need to trace that function to see further how the friends button works.

    In the profile we trace back to functions.php and find ‘bp_add_friend_button()’ that traces to various files, bp-friends-template.php the one of interest again.

    OK i have managed to find

    bp_send_private_message_link and bp_send_private_message_link()

    This covers points 1 and 3 above.

    Does anyone know if there is a template tag for Add Friend button?

    On the profile page there are three buttons

    1. send private message
    2. add friend
    3. send public message

    Does anyone know if there are template tags for these? i’d like to be able to display each button individually in my theme.

    Thanks in advance!

    Looks like JS hiding all the buttons from this test user – though I can see all those links in source.

    Thanks for replying

    1. here is a test user account. Username: user1 Password: user1

    2. Not sure where the public message button went, although my thoughts are that its also overlapping with the others. In this theme they’re not buttons, but text links. so you can see a bunch of text on top of text. if that makes sense.

    When you log into http://www.writerscubed.com the home page won’t have much on it. click on a user image to the right and you should see the jumbled text on the top right of the profile page.

    Thanks for your help it’s much appreciated

    == ‘cancel friendship’ & ‘private message’ buttons overlap each other ==

    1. If you want volunteers to actually check out the issue, please provide test user username and password which you can delete later.

    2. What happened to the ‘public message’ button which in bp-default theme shows up between ‘cancel friendship’ and ‘private message’ buttons?

    3. In all probability, you would just need to add styles in your theme’s style.css file. something like:
    `#item-buttons a { margin-right: 15px; }`
    The above will work in bp-default theme. No guarantees this will work on your theme.

    The ‘cancel friendship’ & ‘private message’ buttons overlap each other on users profile pages. How can I move one over to one side so we can see and click on either one.

    == it looks so rubbish in IE. ==
    Yup, IE < 9 is bane of designer/developer :-) There are still at least 2 solutions as I pointed to above if you want to pursue the buttons later.

    == But please is there a way to wrap the Edit Profile link which is in the item-header so that it shows on your own profile alone and not when viewing others profile. instead of hiding it under private message button. ==

    Saw your new topic and answered you there https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/how-to-make-a-link-show-on-your-profile-alone/

    #132614

    @mercime, thanks so much for your help so far, have given up on the button. it looks so rubbish in IE. i dont even check it until you call my attention to it.

    But please is there a way to wrap the Edit Profile link which is in the item-header so that it shows on your own profile alone and not when viewing others profile. instead of hiding it under private message button.

    The code am using is :
    `<a class="edit-my"<a href="profile/edit”>Edit Profile`

    I mean may be a wrap to declare something like if is_ user_profile

    Regards

    @mercime, thanks so much. the problem has been solved. what i did was i declare them seprately and it works.

    div#item-header #send-private-message a{background: url(_inc/images/plus-icon.png)no-repeat 0 2px transparent;padding-left:16px;
    }
    div#item-header #send-private-message {background:#ededed;background:-webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(white), to(#ededed));background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, white, #ededed);filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr=’#ffffff’, endColorstr=’#ededed’);}

    There can only be normally one background image per element in CSS2 so when you add the icon, it will override the gradient background created in parent theme. You could add extra bg-img using pseudo-elements but that’s good for modern browsers and IE8+ only.

    You can use multiple background images for one element with CSS3 compatible with most modern browsers incl. IE9 above. But if you have users who use IE8 below, it will note show up at all.

    One solution for cross-browser compatibility down to IE7 is to create an image with the icon and the gradient background, e.g. activity-time-since-with-gradient-background.png, together and hook that to the link:
    `div#item-header #send-private-message a {
    background: transparent url(_inc/images/activity-time-since-with-gradient-background.png) left center no-repeat !important;
    padding-left: 25px;
    }`
    Of course your image name won’t be that long.

    The other solution is this: http://www.norestfortheweekend.com/2011/02/26/css3-gradients-multiple-backgrounds-and-ie7/ This is more involved but a great learning experience if you have the time.

    @naijaping Hook the background image to your link. Add this to your stylesheet
    `div#item-header #send-private-message a {
    background: transparent url(_inc/images/activity-time-since.png) left center no-repeat !important;
    padding-left: 25px;
    }`

    In addition, you have two styles for `div#item-header #send-private-message` and the second one overlaps and hides the Edit Profile link. So look for `div#item-header #send-private-message`

    Keep the first one below
    `div#item-header #send-private-message {
    float: left;
    position: absolute;
    right: 330px;
    top: 22px;
    }`

    Delete the second one below
    `div#item-header #send-private-message {
    right: 243px;
    }`

    I too am having this problem. I’m using a custom theme from RocketThemes. I looked in the member-header.php file and it has that line of code you listed.

    On my member profile pages it only lists “Add Friend” Public Message” & “Private Message.”

    #27916

    So i have developed a custom theme which is a child theme of the BP default (although most has been recreated so i’m not inheriting too much from the parent) In my theme it seems that I am unable to add friends, post activity updates or submit private messages. the buttons for messaging and friending don’t even show up on user profiles. (and they are turned on in the settings) I can see the “add friend” link in the member’s directory but clicking it just disables the button. It doesn’t seem to go through. And the private messaging always fails as well.

    I am sure that in creating my theme I may have left something out. And my hunch is it’s something to do with the AJAX process behind those features.

    I was wondering if anyone knew what dependencies were tied to the ajax submission of friend requests, activity updates and or private messaging. Or some sort of documentation for those?

    I realize these may be two separate issues but they seem linked to me.

    These scripts are enqueued in my head:
    `
    /wp-includes/js/comment-reply.js
    googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.0/jquery.min.js?ver=3.3.1
    /wp-content/plugins/bp-labs/beakers/js/jquery.mentions.js?ver=1.2
    /wp-content/plugins/bp-labs/beakers/js/autosuggest.js?ver=1.0
    /wp-content/themes/punchbowl/_inc/global.js?ver=20111013
    /wp-includes/js/json2.js?ver=2011-02-23
    /wp-content/plugins/bp-live-notification/bpln.js?ver=3.3.1

    var ajaxurl = “…/wp-load.php”;

    `

    And any other info I can give to help just let me know.

    Hi

    I am trying to add “Private Message” button to single.php so the readers can send the post author private message. Is that possible?

    Help!

    I have recently upgraded my site to WordPress. I’m using BuddyPress and s2Member to manage memberships. The BuddyPress part isn’t working properly. People can create a membership, yet nothing shows up for their profile data, nothing shows up for any other members’ profile info if you click on someone else, and the “change avatar” button also is not working for anyone.

    Basically none of the functions are working for profiles – the (should be) interactive screen that has an avatar, “add friend” “mention this user” “send private message”, then underneath has other tabs like “activity” “profile” “friends” “groups”, etc. Underneath that, there is nothing. Also, when those tabs are clicked, sub-functions come up (e.g. if you click on “profile” for your own account, other things come up underneath that say “edit profile” “change avatar”), but none work or show anything on the screen.

    As far as I can tell, I have settings set up correctly in the BuddyPress dashboard area for avatar uploads, etc.

    Desperately seeking answers…thank you in advance. http://www.KBWomen.com

    Howdy,

    I am running a sanbox install of WP and BP, both latest versions. I’m using the Suffusion theme and the minima skin. I ran into a situation where I get an infinite redirect loop.

    In my sandbox I have a user “charile” and a public group “X”. Charlie joined the public group and was in it for a while. Then I changed group X to be a private group. I had charlie leave the group and verified that no group X activity appears in his streams. So far so good.

    Now Charlie goes to the group directory at /groups. He sees group X in the list because it is a private group. He sees the “request to join” button. But does not click it. The group name X is a hyper link. For people who are in the group, the link will take them to the group’s home page. But when Charlie clicks the link, the browser hangs for a while and then gives an error message about multiple redirects.

    If a site visitor (not registered or logged in) goes the the /groups page and clicks the name of group X, it redirects him back to the home page. But when Charlie logs in and clicks it, he gets the infinite redirect problem.

    Not sure if this as anything to do with the fact that Charlie used to be a member of the group but left. Or if maybe there’s something wrong with the suffusion buddy pack. Also I have several plugins installed that add to the groups (BP Documents, U BuddyPress Editor, Events Manager, Photo Album, etc.)

    This is not an end-of-the-world problem, But I figured I’d report it in case anyone has seen any similar issues.

    I’m going to regenerate the BP Pack files and see if that helps. But I’m a little concerned they will blow away changes made by the other plugins. But we’ll see.

    Hey Chris,

    my mistake. You were right. All I had to do was paste the following into the functions.php (does not matter where):

    add_action( ‘bp_member_header_actions’, ‘bp_add_friend_button’ );
    add_action( ‘bp_member_header_actions’, ‘bp_send_public_message_button’ );
    add_action( ‘bp_member_header_actions’, ‘bp_send_private_message_button’ );

    Thank you again.

    Hey Chris thank you for the prompt response. So I found this code:

    if ( !is_admin() ) {
    // Register buttons for the relevant component templates
    // Friends button
    if ( bp_is_active( ‘friends’ ) )
    add_action( ‘bp_member_header_actions’, ‘bp_add_friend_button’ );

    // Activity button
    if ( bp_is_active( ‘activity’ ) )
    add_action( ‘bp_member_header_actions’, ‘bp_send_public_message_button’ );

    // Messages button
    if ( bp_is_active( ‘messages’ ) )
    add_action( ‘bp_member_header_actions’, ‘bp_send_private_message_button’ );

    // Group buttons
    if ( bp_is_active( ‘groups’ ) ) {
    add_action( ‘bp_group_header_actions’, ‘bp_group_join_button’ );
    add_action( ‘bp_group_header_actions’, ‘bp_group_new_topic_button’ );
    add_action( ‘bp_directory_groups_actions’, ‘bp_group_join_button’ );
    }

    // Blog button
    if ( bp_is_active( ‘blogs’ ) )
    add_action( ‘bp_directory_blogs_actions’, ‘bp_blogs_visit_blog_button’ );
    }
    }

    and added it to the bottom of my themes functions.php. I had to remove the code though because it crashed the website :

    Hi, I’m using the BP follow plugin (which rocks :)) but I came across a little surprise trying to extend it. As I posted on the plugin’s forum I want users to be able send each other PMs if the destinatary is following the sender. I managed to get that but the “Private message” button was still there. I made a little hook to remove if it’s not possible to send a message to the user but in order to make it I found out that the function used to get the following’s ids returns a string, instead of an array of ids (which was my guess).

    I’m not a programmer (I’m learning to code with BP) but I think bp_get_following_ids() returning an array would be much more useful. What do you think ?

    Thanks !

    Hello, I am new to buddypress, and am trying to build a page using the system, but am having trouble finding a couple solutions I would need. Maybe some of you know of a way to incorporate a row of skype hyperlinks to my member’s profiles. Here is basically a schematic of what I would need. I am not a php coder, but am looking into it just in case no one else can help me. It seems like it would be simple enough to create, but I havent found a plugin created yet.

    1. This plugin would need to have 4 buttons under the regular set of buttons on the User Profiles that include Follow, Private Message, Friend, Public Message.

    The buttons would be in a row under the above set of buttons and they would include:
    Call Me :-
    Add Me :-
    Chat :-
    Profile :-

    Now I would have to include a Profile Field in Buddypress labeled SkypeID, and this skype id would have to replace YourUsername above.

    Please help me, whether by teaching me how to do this or by creating it and sending it to me and sharing it with the rest of the Buddypress community. It sounds simple enough for someone who knows what they are doing.
