@nipponmonkey: I tried your solution above, but now all my pages are blank and nothing is visible… I added it directly to my functions.php and changed/added absolutely nothing. Did I make an error?
@themeanwhile – you can enable or disable the various components so if you want Activities only, enable that and disable other components. After you activate BuddyPress, go to the new BuddyPress menu item on the left column of dashboard, and go to
a) General Settings – these are your choices
Base profile group name:
Full Name field name:
Disable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing?: Yes No
Hide admin bar for logged out users?: Yes No
Disable avatar uploads? (Gravatars will still work): Yes No
Disable user account deletion?: Yes No
Disable global forum directory?: Yes No
Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts?: Yes No
Default User Avatar – For users without a custom avatar of their own, you can either display a generic logo or a generated one based on their email address
b) Component Setup
Activity Streams – Allow users to post activity updates and track all activity across the entire site.
Enabled Disabled
Blog Tracking – Tracks blogs, blog posts and blogs comments for a user across a WPMU installation.
Enabled Disabled
bbPress Forums – Activates bbPress forum support within BuddyPress groups or any other custom component.
Enabled Disabled
Friends – Allows the creation of friend connections between users.
Enabled Disabled
Groups – Let users create, join and participate in groups.
Enabled Disabled
Private Messaging – Let users send private messages to one another. Site admins can also send site-wide notices.
Enabled Disabled
Extended Profiles – Activates customizable profiles and avatars for site users.
Enabled Disabled
I would suggest you set up a test install so you can check the features for yourself.
“Of course, activity filters, profile page, friends page, settings page, etc, would also need to be migrated to display in the backend.”
Why? If you want to make the BP Activity section private, you can add conditional tags for is_user_logged_in …
A few days ago I released BP Group Control (http://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-group-control/), a plugin that lets users pick a group to show up next to their name on their profile and in directories. Also it lets group admins add users directly to their groups, and create new users for the site. It adds eject user and delete user options as well.
If you don’t want or need certain features, you can turn them off pretty much one by one. You can set different rules for public groups vs. private, and adjust the permissions of group admins and regular users.
Basically this is a beta version – it has been tested but there could still be bugs. Please report them so I can fix. Also, if you have an idea for something to put in the next version, feel free to speak your mind. Thanks everyone, and I hope you all enjoy the plugin!
P.S. Stop by http://danpolant.com/bp-group-control-usability-test/ to see a usability test that I did a few weeks ago.
I am trying to connect multiple BP sites in a Grandparent- Parent- Child- Grandchild format so that if a member registers and joins a lower site (Grandchild site) they will automatically be registered in the higher sites.
Example: For an educational site we would like to have a Global Site (Grandparent) a Country Site (Parent) and City Site (Child) and a Organization Site (Grandchild). In this case if someone registered for a private organizational site, lets say a Church, they would automatically be registered in three other sites (City, Country and Global) and would be able to have their information auto populated in these other sites and use the same user name and password that they used in the first site.
Any thoughts on how to do this could be done?
Hello, When i Send a Private Message, the time says “Sent 7 hours ago”, but regular activity feeds have the correct time. Does anyone know how to resolve this?
thanks.
Ok got this back to the right section…
Original patch worked time wise the first time, then didn’t allow me to receive messages…
Tried altering the 7 files in the the 002 .diff file here: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2203
It ended stating that the messages sent were 10 years 6 months ago… Double checked to make sure I applied code correct.
Removed Code and now it’s back to saying private messeages, just sent, were sent 5 hours ago.
@piphut
Yes private messages… using the included ticket “patch”
@pisanojm
What kind of messages are you referring to? Private messages?
Please add your issue in here so someone can look into it
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2405
You can login using the same username/password.
Having the same problem on one of my websites. I made of copy of my database, installed it on another site and the problem was gone. And I don’t know what is the difference between the two.
I’m trying this again. I’ll let you know if it works.
So I sent a private message to someone on my site and noticed immediately after it was sent that the timestamp said “4 hours and 1 minute ago”. I clicked on a few more messages and sure enough all of them are tacking on 4 hours to the actual sent time.
I don’t think it was always like this but I didn’t notice when it started happening.
Any suggestions to fix this?

With the “Friends” component disabled, autocomplete on the “Send To” field in “Messages > Compose” should work for all members. Otherwise there’s no way to choose a recipient. You can write a message but you can’t send it. The only way to send a message is to visit the recipient’s profile and click “Send Private Message”. If you can message anyone by visiting their profile, why not be able to message anyone by visiting “Messages > Compose”? With “Friends” turned on, autocomplete could go back to using just friends. But with “Friends” turned off, autocomplete should work for all members.
Essentially, turning off “Friends” should be like saying that everyone is a friend… rather than like saying that no one is a friend. You can see all members in the member directory anyway.
My only fall back right now (I refuse to enable friending) is to simply hide the autocomplete box completely. So you’ll only be able to message one person at a time by going to their profile and clicking “send private message”
Hi
Has anyone else experienced this or know of a fix I can’t find any fix for this
Thanks
I just tried that as well. Still getting the same “Sorry, you must be invited to join” message. Driving me nuts. I think it has something to do with another plugin i have installed. The registered only plugin. When I disable that things seem to run smoothly.. gotta test it out again tho. Gonna have to find another way to keep the site private.
thanks,
eor
BP would benefit from some table reduction.
Andy and I talked at WordCamp San Fran about how some components would benefit greatly from using the posts table, like Private Messages and Groups. Other components like XProfile would be more tricky and may not see any performance improvements, but would still be doable similar to the WP3.0 Menus.
So, it’s a likely direction, but don’t quote me yet.
I was trying to add a new to a fresh buddypress install and when I got to the second page to set the type of group I selected Private and then clicked next. I get a display of a page with a # and message from IE that says it modified the page.
The group did get add.
I then tried FireFox to update the group settings and got an page not found error clicking on save the setting page as it tried to display /admin/group-settings

I too would like the ability to have forums separate from groups. I think those of us who need this are generally building very niche communities, and are not trying to create the next Facebook. Mine for example is based all around a specific era of the Ford Mustang. Nearly every topic that will be discussed on my site is relevant to every user. I don’t like the idea of any of my users, not being able to read a topic because another user created it within a private group.
On a side note: I would like the ability to retain group functions, with the ability to have forums within groups. But I would also like the ability for users to move topics between forums. This way, if some one creates a group called California Mustang Owners, and a topic is started with a question regarding Mustang Suspension, a user will be able to move that topic to the Tech section of the forums which will yield a much better return for the original poster when everyone is able to help answer his question.
I upgraded from 1.2.3 to 1.2.4.1 and I have 2 problems (that I have found so far)
Not MU and using default theme
These 2 faults did not exist with 1.2.3
1. The time stamps have gone crazy they seem to be 8 hours ago – send a message to someone and it says message sent 8 hours ago
Postings have replies before the original posts – it says post 0 seconds ago – refresh then 8 hours ago
2. I have a private group and when I accept the user to the group, in the groups activity feed, I am the new user NOT the other person!!! Also my avatar is replaced with a default avatar image
Do you know what is causing these problems and how to fix them
Thanks

MORE INFO
I know this worked fine before updating from 1.2.3
1.2.4.1 / 2.9.2 NOT MU default theme
When I accept a new member to a private group the activity feed for the group says I am the new member NOT the person who requested to join..
This is a BIG bug…
Help please….
Is there somewhere a piece of php code that shows me how to create a group via php?
What I want is that as soon as someone uses in his text “#whatever” that #whatever turns in a link to a new group “whatever”.
I think that Twitter’s #’s then nicely align with BuddyPress groups. (and nice to use with rss feed groups fillings)
It will auto extend my groups and that other groups will be auto-filled with twitter rss feeds from #’s. It means that it can really fast become a copy of twitter

I can then use track of the #’s used in a specific group to show “related groups”
To limit this a bit I could set it so that only #’s from some prime groups create new groups and NOT that #’s from #’s create new groups.
Hmmm… i think i need to write a plugin for it
(i think that # in twitter = tag page in wordpress = group in buddypress) (unfortunately tag pages in wordpress do not allow conversations unless on specific posts, maybe with some tweaking of the p2 theme it can) (but groups are nicer).
(a next step is look for related #’s / tags in delicious/stumbleupon etc… to find a nice set of related tags/groups)
{what Im trying to achieve is replace my related tags code in my private weblog with a buddypress followup see e.g.: http://edward.de.leau.net/about/wordpress for each tag i display the related tags, for some tags I have created a special layout e.g. http://edward.de.leau.net/about/music what is a next step is to add some conversations and buddy press groups would be cool to somehow mix into that posts with a custom sidebar and heading)
@djpaul
at Private-Messaging it says “send between username and _”
the _ means blank
Thanks for the reply @r-a-y
I wasn’t expecting one so soon …
I tried that…but it did not work….My understanding is that this text-box would not allow me to paste code….so Here is the link….
http://pastie.org/private/8mymveqb0x5l04cvlm6aqa
I am trying to just fetch the avatar, name of group based on slugs….as u can see, i echoed the $slug_params to see if that bit was working fine…it is… Help appreciated…
@owrede – Ping! Please read from here on. See if this resolves your issue.
[EDIT]
Just reading your issue again… doesn’t seem like this is a related issue.
Does your problem occur when using the default BP theme? You might want to start a separate thread in order to avoid confusion.
@r-a-y I changed it in the DB.
