In reply to: Several issues after upgrading to 1.6
Tammie Lister
ModeratorHi Kris3d, first up you’ve probably seen it but can you confirm you’ve followed the steps in this thread? https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/transitioning-from-1-5-x-to-1-6/ Just want to know what stage you are at in diagnosing. Can you also confirm you’ve checked and are using BuddyPress 1.6 versions of any theme or plugins you are using?
That all being said have you tried resaving your settings under settings > BuddyPress and resaving your permlinks under settings > permlinks? Are you using any caching plugins? If so have you tried clearing them? I know some hosting has cache enabled that may be causing issues for you here, it may of course not be the issue though.
Assuming all that is there anything in your error logs on your server that may shed some light? Rather than pasting the entire thing you can use something like https://gist.github.com/ and link in that way please?

ModeratorJust as as sanity check have you both looked at this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/transitioning-from-1-5-x-to-1-6/. I know it may not be relevant but trying to throw something into the mix that may help.
Assuming you’ve upgraded all themes / plugins to 1.6 versions also then I think what is needed here would be information on your setup.
For instance: what did you upgrade from? What theme / plugins are you using? Anything else in your error logs? You can use something like https://gist.github.com/ to paste then link to your error logs.

ModeratorHi lifemore, can you confirm you followed the steps in this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/transitioning-from-1-5-x-to-1-6/. Also what version of WordPress / BuddyPress did you upgrade from? I assume you’ve checked that both your theme and / or plugins using with BuddyPress are also upgraded to versions for BuddyPress 1.6?
Have you tried re-saving your settings for BuddyPress and permlinks under Settings >BuddyPress and Settings > Permlinks?
If all that is correct, could you please if possible provide a link or find out what path is being called for the images. Be helpful to see what the image is being listed as even if it’s a wrong file.

ModeratorJust to check have you updated to the latest version if one is out for 1.6 compatibility? Are you able to switch to the default theme for BuddyPress to test if you still get the error – that way we can determine if your theme or not? I understand though on live site you may not be able to do this.
If it does turn out to be the theme there is this forum https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/ for that theme on this site. It would hopefully mean the authors can see any issues you are having and respond.

ParticipantYou can probably get back into your admin panel by “deactivating” some or ALL of your plugins. You can deactivate all of them by just changing the name of the wp-content/plugins folder via an FTP software to something else (pluginz). If you are sure that it is Buddypress that is the offender, you can just go in and delete the wp-content/plugins/buddypress folder and see if that gets you back in (don’t worry: all your content from BP is stored in the MySQL table, which is separate from your plugins directory, so you won’t lose anything by deleting a plugin: you can always download another version through the plugin installer).
Alternatively, if you think it’s a theme issue, do the same thing only with the theme. Delete the Mingle folder in wp-content/themes and Buddypress should revert back to the BP-Default theme. If it doesn’t, delete Mingle and Buddpress (the plugin) and then re-download Buddypress and activate the default theme.
As Tammi pointed out, it looks like Mingle is compatible with 1.6. http://themeforest.net/item/mingle-multipurpose-wordpress-theme/235056

ParticipantIn your theme’s functions.php file, add this code:
`if (!current_user_can(‘manage_options’)) {
add_filter(‘show_admin_bar’, ‘__return_false’);
}`Can’t take the credit for this. Google is your friend:

Keymaster@mr_zog – There hasn’t been any significant changes to the bp-default theme since 1.5.7. What version of BP 1.5 were you using before?
Looks like you have narrowed this down to a child theme issue. Unfortunately, it’s hard to debug what’s happening. Are you using the “bp_is_current_component()” function in anyway? Did you disable the Extended Profiles component?
Try to pinpoint what pages this error shows up on and then figure out which custom template file is causing the problem.

ParticipantI have re-installed the Bp 1.5.7 via ftp …
waiting until the 1.6 is compatible with my theme ..

MemberAnd I use bp-default theme.

MemberI am using my own child theme based on the core theme. I just tried switching to the default buddypress theme and did not receive the error. I should have tried that.
Is there a specific reference for 1.6 theme changes? Or should I dig through the template files looking for the changes?I am running a large number of plugins and I have a handful of functions that I wrote for modifying the tabs on a user’s profile. I do not receive any errors if viewing another users profile, but only if “editing” or viewing the current users. I have a feeling it is one of my functions that is causing this failure.

ModeratorNo problem, there are a number of great getting started guides https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/ – also a great day to get BuddyPress as it’s just had a new version released today

ModeratorHi David, just to check can you provide a bit more information about your site? For instance what theme are you using and / or plugins? Have you checked they are all updated for BuddyPress 1.6? Or are you using a custom theme and have you updated that (if that is the case) for 1.6?

ModeratorHi Shemada, just as a check have you updated the Mingle theme to it’s 1.6 version? I see that they have released a version for BuddyPress 1.6 so wanted to check you are using it?
If you are – can you also confirm you have updated any plugins you are using along with BuddyPress?

MemberThanks Karma,
I’ve dug a little deeper and what your saying seems spot on. The theme says compatible with or without BP so the theme is installed. I don’t see “Members” “Groups” etc… and I was trying to find them but realized it looks like BP wasn’t installed, just the theme.
I guess from here I need to install BP to get the BP functionality.
Thanks for your response!

Moderator@sobuddy, have you updated your themes and plugin / plugins you are using to make sure they are compatible with BuddyPress 1.6?
August 6, 2012 at 6:41 pm #138514Tammie Lister
ModeratorThe only cases where themes for BuddyPress wouldn’t need to have BuddyPress would be if they have a check in them and say they work without BuddyPress. If you want the ‘BuddyPress functionality’ then yes you have to install BuddyPress. It sounds like you do if you say forums/members/groups.

ModeratorJust as a ‘sanity check’ have you resaved your pages / relinked them up under settings > BuddyPress?
I’d also suggest you check that you’ve updated your plugins and themes to versions for BuddyPress 1.6 – or if a custom theme checked you’ve got all the correct changes in it.
August 6, 2012 at 6:35 pm #138511Tammie Lister
ModeratorIt’s hard to say what has gone on exactly but lets take a look at some common things that can go wrong in upgrades.
When you say ‘not showing’ do you mean you see a white screen?
The first would be have you updated your theme and plugins (if using any)? You should always make sure both your theme and the plugins you use are updated to the version of BuddyPress – many will be issuing updated versions.
Assuming that is not your issue then do you have access to your server error logs? Can you see anything in those which may shed some light? If you do link them here please use gist (https://gist.github.com/) or something don’t add them all to this thread.

Participant‘add_filter(‘show_admin_bar’, ‘__return_false’);` in your functions.php file to turn off fully.
Alternatively, you can use:
‘Settings > BuddyPress : Toolbar Show the Toolbar for logged out users’
You can also select to show or hide the WordPress admin bar on your own profile.
If none of those work for you then you may need to look see if your theme is forcing something.
