I’m having the same problem. I will provide as MUCH information as I can per the list.

    Website here: http://test.risdarchitecture.net

I’ve moved the BP themes to the wp-content/themes directory.

This is the third clean install of WPMU and BP (including new SQL database, etc).

I host with 1and1, so I’ve had to add a .htaccess file to the root directory to change to php5.

    1. Which version of WPMU are you running? WordPress MU 2.8.4

    2. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install? Directory

    3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? It is in the root, however the root URL itself is a subdirectory.

    4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WPMU? If so, from which version? No.

    5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress? Yes.

    6. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running? Version 1.1.2

    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? No.

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? No.

    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Yes.

    10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No.

    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No.

    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? BP came with an install of bbPress installed (I think).

    13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. My site is hosted by 1and1. I don’t think they provide log files.

Please help! I’ve read and read this forum and there doesn’t seem to be a definitive solution anywhere.

    THIS HAS BEEN RESOLVED.

First of all, thank you for trying to help out. I didn’t mean to abandon my own issue when everyone stepped up to help, but I was wildly distracted and just found time to work on this some more.

Long story short: Another WordPress Classifieds Plugin breaks BuddyPress groups. I just spent two hours going through everything, and it’s absolutely, undoubtedly AWPCP.

The odd thing is that I had it installed before this issue was happening. I even upgraded tonight, thinking it was nothing. I deactivated every BP plugin I was using weeks ago — groups, welcome pack, auto-join-groups, external-group-blogs, achievements — thinking they were the most likely culprits. I re-installed them tonight, then de-activated all of them again in case something was corrupted or went bad. Nothing changed.

Based on DJPaul’s advice, I went for both cforms and AWPCP out of sheer desperation. I’ve tested it 100 times now, and as it turns out, AWPCP breaks the avatar upload functionality.

It’s worth noting that I don’t know why. I even tested the events avatar functionality, and it worked just fine.

I googled this before I posted, and I haven’t seen any other mention of this conflict, so I’m posting this here in hopes that it may help someone else. I currently have version 1.0.5.9 installed, but like I said, I just upgraded tonight, so the previous version was an issue too. Older versions may well not cause a conflict.

Anyway, thank you all again for your help on this and your work with BP.

    Greetings,

I have just installed a fresh WordPress/bbPress/buddypress site. However I want to use my original bbPress installation and not the buddypress version.

I would like my URLs to look more like mysite/blogs and mysite/forums. Before I am thrown to subdomains as a solution, that is not an option.

    Regards,

    D

If I set a forum in a hiddend BuddyPress group it will be hidden in BBPress too?.

    @sacom, not necessarily.

Look into Burt Adsit’s bp Groups plugin:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bpgroups/

This is what I’m using on BP < 1.1 (yeah I know I got to play catch-up!)

I’m not sure how compatible it is with BP 1.1+…

I’ve installed the most current versions of WordPress MU (2.8.4) and BuddyPress (1.1). My Facebook Connect plugin appeared to install correctly (set up the API key and the like). When I click the login button, I get a login window — after entering login data, I get a “page not found” error.

Anybody know what I’m doing wrong?

    Test site is at http://tribblogs.com/sandy/

tcesco, I recently ported over a version of the more general bbPress attachments plugin by _ck_: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/. The downside is that I haven’t yet gotten inline images to work, which means that people can upload and download images but they don’t appear as images in the posts (just downloadable file links). Thus it might not work for your purpose, but it’s worth a look.

    Hello all,

So I figured out what was breaking my autocomplete.

First off, I am using wpmu 2.84a and buddypress 1.1.1.

I have two blogs set up on mu using virtual sub-directories instead of subdomains.

The first blog is on the root using the wordpress default theme and acts as an outside blog (blog id=1) and the buddypress theme is on another blog acting as a private area (blog id=2). By doing this, I can have one wp-admin with a public and private area.

However, by changing the blog id in the bp-core file from 1 to 2 on line 20 for buddypress to work properly, it breaks the autocomplete; but everything else works fine.

    i believe this is a bug …

I´ve got exactly the same problem. I´ve got a fresh install of WPMU 2.8.4a and BuddyPress 1.1.1, no separate bbPress as I thought BuddyPress would perform that install for me.

    This is what I get:

    ====

bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly. If you are having problems you can re-install

NOTE: The forums directory will only work if your bbPress tables are in the same database as your WordPress tables. If you are not using an existing bbPress install you can ignore this message.

    ====

When I try to post a new topic in any of the forums I get:

“There was an error when creating the topic”

So I guess bbPress isn´t installed after all? :-)

We just put the first version of a BuddyPress location-based member directory into the repository. It can be used for distance based member searches and/or business directories.

It hasn’t seen a lot of real world testing, so if anyone wants to take it for a spin, that would be appreciated. It will probably only work on a very recent version of BP. If anyone has any issues, please drop a comment here and I’ll try and resolve them in short order.

I tested my site with ie7 and ie8. I could not recreate the issue of the home page left column appearing below the middle and right column on my site (but I did observe this behavior with ie7 on buddypress.org). No other issue mentioned above was observed on my site (except for the one noted below). As I mentioned, I did see this behavior on a public computer/kiosk using IE (given my comments below, it seems more likely that it was ie7).

You can see (or at least I can) a similar issue regarding the left column loading below the right column when using IE7 at http://buddypress.org (this site). Visit the ‘About’ and ‘Demo’ links (not the actual demo site). There are only 2 columns but the left appears under the right column with ie7.

The one issue I was able to recreate on my site was the floating submenu when using the WordPress Default 1.6 Blog Theme. No problem with ie8 but with ie7 the buddybar submenus under ‘My Account’ or ‘My Blogs’ float to the right. I logged into http://testbp.org and created a blog with the default theme and found the same behavior when using ie7.

I don’t think my specific site offers any insight since the issues that can be recreated are evident on buddypress.org and testbp.org (when logged in and using the default blog theme). I find it curious that others aren’t reporting this behavior as it should be easy to replicate.

If you haven’t already, copy bp-themes/bp-default and /bp-sn-parent to the normal WordPress theme directory (/wp-content/themes).

/wp-content/bp-themes/ is for a previous version of BP themes. Unless you know why you might still want to use it, make sure that /wp-content/bp-themes/ does not exist (i.e. delete the folder) else BP will get confused.

Activate the bp-default theme, put it on your main WPMU blog and it should work.

    EDIT: Jeff won!

    Hello,

I am brand new to buddy press, and wordpress MU, but have been working with wordpress for many years. I’ve managed to get the latest versions of MU and Buddy press installed on my server with very little problems, except for one.

When I enter the buddy press section of my admin panel, i get this message at the top, below the header.

“Your currently active theme is not BuddyPress enabled.

Visit http://buddypress.org/extend/themes/ to browse themes that include support for BuddyPress features.”

When i go to “Site Admin – Themes” i only have the following three options.

    WordPress classic

    Wordpress default

    Wordpress mu homepage

    I have them all activated.

IN my research to figure out what to do next, I found this blog. http://www.bestwpthemez.com/wordpress/how-to-use-buddypress-themes-3290/

If I’m not mistaken, it appears I’m missing a the buddypress-home theme, and I’m not sure where to get it.

    To quote the blog

    “Default WordPress Home Theme

The WordPress Home theme bundled with BuddyPress is just a standard WordPress blog theme. The theme does look slightly different from your standard WordPress theme however. It actually moves the “Blog” part from the front page, and instead places it under a /blog sub-directory. On the front page, there are spaces where you can drop widgets, allowing you to display lots of dynamic, social content for your visitors to interact with.

The WordPress home theme is installed in the usual WordPress theme folder, along with all other BuddyPress themes.

    <root>/wp-content/themes/buddypress-home/”

Any idea where i’ve gone wrong, or what direction i need to head in? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I’m afraid if the developer of that plugin is not responding to your questions, then that may very well indicate that they have stopped supporting the plugin. You should post (if you have not already) on the WPMU forums and see if anyone has information.

Perhaps someone there may know of an alternative or will adopt the plugin and bring it up to code. Make sure you mention that you want to use this plugin in BuddyPress.

    For Ousep’s post:

Do I really have to use the bp-sn-whatever template to be able to use any of buddypress's functionality?

No. Just like WordPress has its famouse “Loop”, BuddyPress implements its own Loops for all of the core components and features. See https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/.

There is a range of different theme information on the Codex, but you are able to copy all of the templates from the BuddyPress parent theme into any WordPress theme and it will work. You will need to add custom CSS to style those elements, obviously.

I’m not sure how Facebook connect works… but allowing sign up or not is simply another configuration setting. I think it’s under the WPMU settings menu.

    Hi

i have just install wordpress mu and was trying to install buddypress. i was following a guide on how to install and had just uploaded the buddypress files to the mu-plugins folder and when i went to refresh the site i got this error.

Warning: require(BP_PLUGIN_DIR/bp-activity/bp-activity-classes.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /public_html/wpmu/wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-activity.php on line 9

now i have since looked through the code and everything appears to be correct.

I saw my site on a kiosk with IE8 today. The home page looked as you described. I didn’t know if was a result of IE8 or the resolution of the monitor.

I also saw that buddybar menus on the bp home page did not appear ‘in front’ of the upper left members, groups, blogs search box and picklist. I didn’t look at all my blog themes but I did notice that WordPress Default 1.6 Theme by Michael Heilemann breaks with BP. The sub menus under “My Blogs”, > Dashboard- New Post- etc, are all disconnected from the menu. They float over to the right. I’ll check it with testbp.org. Is any one else seeing this IE8 buddybar menu behavior on the bp home and default blog theme?

It appears to be build around BP1.0. To bad, though, I think most folks would benefit from BP1.1 as WordPress users are used to quick updates, so I’m not sure how much attention the plugin will receive. Hopefully it won’t be to long for a BP1.1 and higher version.

Looks like a good start though on the demo.

    #55175

Using BuddyPress will ensure constant, future-proof development. I think using it instead of a random authors plugin is probably the best thing to do.

You’re still going to need to adapt to WordPress being a slave to BuddyPress for all of the ways that BP hooks into and filters things like themes.

BP assumes that you’re going to use most of its components, and if you turn them off it’s kind of up to you as the site author/admin to adjust accordingly.

This script is most likely out of date with WPMU. Post a comment to the developer of the script in the link in the OP.
