Participantit’s possible and I am sort of working on something like this but when I say working managing to map out all the problems I hadn’t envisaged. At the moment there is a manual-ish approach that can be taken where one (admin) can set profile fields check boxes that correspond to existing post tags, user makes a selection of the tags that interest them and then a post loop is run against the user id and the tags they have selected and posts displayed, I wanted to try and take that further and make it less manual but I may try to run up the widget first then try and build the rest around it

MemberHi beraike22
Thanks for this, unfortunately it doesnt really solve the problem. What this will do is allow users to register to a group on signup.
I want to store metadata in a users profile taken from a pre-populated custom field. So that I can use the same custom field to tag posts and therefore establishing a link between users and posts. So if a user says they are interested in science fiction books, then in theory I could present a list of pages tagged with science fiction can be displayed, etc,.. the dispalying isnt the hard part, its creating the metadata which is consistant throughout posts and users.
Thanks for your help

InactiveThe second coding round for routes is in. Routes can now be edited, activity comments can be posted on routes and routes can be included in blog posts (depending on the privacy setting). Also, coordinates can now be attached to blog posts and a map can then be displayed on the actual blog post. For both post and route maps, a shortcode creator has been integrated into the Add Media button on write/edit screens in the backend.

Thanks for All the suggestions Cube Points seems to have all I need for now but I have a couple of questions about it, if anyone knows how to solve it:Anyway here is a couple of questions:
1. Is there anyway to add a text popup or something that says “Congratulations you just earned x points!” (like Yahoo Answers)
2. I want to format ever users profile page like this: http://avatarthelastairbenderonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Profile.jpg As you can see I’m probably going to need a list of Template Tags, Like the points which should be like you mentioned, and I’ll also need to find the code to display their rank and possibly rank image.
3. This might be off topic, but how would I detect whether or not the user is a moderator on any forum on the profile page so I can display an image identifying them as a moderator?
4. I also want to display the users stats in the Forum Posts, and on the sidebar in their User Control Panel (A Custom area I made once a user logs in:) see here for an example of how I am trying to get the forum topic to look: http://avatarthelastairbenderonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Forum-Topic.jpgHas anyone tried that kind of thing.
Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

KeymasterHopefully someone else will chime in, but the only thing you may lose by not importing the bb_usermeta would be any customisation a user has done to their “display name” or “nice name”; it’d default back to that person’s username. They’d have to just type their preferred display name back in to WordPress or bbPress, so nothing tricky. So, I don’t think you need to.. probably.
I get the feeling you’re aware of this, but I’d suggest having a test-run of this to find out how well it works (or doesn’t) before doing it on your live database. Also, check that bb_usermeta and wp_usermeta have the same columns, you may need to massage the import a bit.
Once you get the users into WordPress, and you can log in as one of them, we can see about associating existing bbPress forum posts with a particular BuddyPress Group’s forum. I’ve not done that myself so hopefully someone who has can guide.

ParticipantThat sounds like you actually need a custom front page, but what do mean by ‘click it’ that’s a rather loose term click what?
Why does that page not simply have the text/content you want with a simple link to the registration page and also a simple login, registered users will login and be directed to their profile page by the plugin mentioned earlier. What you do with the main site home link is another question, suppose it’s possible to have that custom frontpage display your intro page to all logged out users and once logged in if a member navigates back to that page it will display ? activity loop / main site blog posts

Participant“Slowing down does not mean dying.
It means they get tired. Tired devs make mistakes. they also have a big job – half the users want faster dev, the other half doesn’t. Vocal people want this change, two months later, more vocal people want the last change ripped out. See the problem there?”Very understandable. Solution: Stop listening to all the feature requests and all the questions about forums/bbpress, event management, galleries, etc. Focus on the core: users, posts, comments. Make those solid and flexible, standardized as much as possible on what is already in WordPress, but with the member management and privacy/security you need for a social network. What are the minimum requirements to run a social network on top of WordPress? Boil it down. All the rest is for theme and plugin developers. Activity stream etc. is just one way to display data. Without a solid, coherent core it will only become a bigger mess as everybody piles on their hacks and ideas.

Participant“There is almost no benefit whatsoever of Friends within BuddyPress …”
Buddypress was supposed to be social networking added to blogging. Friends could form groups and work together in blogs. Friending itself is probably most relevant for internal email. The one thing you need to make that work is beefed up member management beyond default WordPress:
– full real names instead of anonymous meaningless usernames
– extendable, flexible member data fields
– ways to manage member lists
– ways to manage member roles
– ways to manage relations between members
– privacy and security controls on member data
– front-end functionality for members to manage their own profile data
– front-end functionality for members to manage their relationships
– etc.None of these points get the attention they deserve. Again, if you have the three solid elements (1) members (“users”), (2) posts, (3) comments, all the rest is just a matter of displaying the data in different views, including forum view.
The shift in focus from blogging to the old-fashioned bbpress forum structure further derailed the project. Adding social networking to blogging should have been the main focus.
“the best setup is having either Forums or Activity.”
I use neither. I’m trying to structure my custom 1.1.3-based theme around member profiles, blogs and groups with group blogs. My activity stream just reflects what’s happening on the profiles, blogs and groups; it’s not a discussion thread in itself – I think I originally broke the ajax and had to remove reply buttons etc…

Participant@r-a-y i have a tough time understanding it myself! just crazy tinkering I guess, there is probably a simple solution….
I think you’re right about super admin.
I’m talking more about other members, who have posted on other network blogs. If you look at my profile sidebar, you’ll see “my videos” and “my posts” links. Each should take you to the author template page for those members on the corresponding blogs.
My Videos ==> site.com/author/ray
My Posts ==> site2.com/author/rayget_blogs_of_user method works to display only the sites members have posted on sitewide – it will however show primary site of a member regardless of posts.
get_blog_details method forces all member profiles to display the links regardless of having posts or not. It will just link to the author page with “no posts for this author’ message as part of the author.php template.
the issue i’m having with get_blogs_of user, I have users who make one time posts by way of a frontend form. They own that post but they don’t have a role on the blog. I think that is the reason why on some users, the links don’t display even if they do have posts.
both methods are useful depending on how you want to use them.
i’d like to be able to use the get_blog_details method because it lets me define what links to display. and the issue i have with that is that the links are always present, I’d like for them to only show up if the user has posts.
make less sense now! hehe, anyway it is a very specific feature, some people may like to do something like this.

ParticipantThere is a lot of discussion about symptoms. I believe the core problem is the pile-up of similar features that all get their own database tables – blog posts AND forum posts etc.
You really only need three basic building blocks; users, posts, comments. Less is more. Most of the issues discussed in this thread are just different ways of displaying data from those three building blocks.
Because the confusion starts in the core, you can’t really fix it in custom themes. If Buddypress was more coherently architected it would be a lot easier to provide a forum view or a blog view or a group view etc.

though, if a family site – why not lock down the entire site only to logged in users? (a few threads floating around here how to do that)

Memberblog? website? microsite? Whats the difference with WP these days?
I’m getting confused. Are we talking about a system where …
1, A main site (ourcommunity.com) could display news/posts from it’s child sites (child1.ourcommunity.com).
2, Each child site would have its own exclusive BP functionality – with its own users (and the associated privelages). This sounds like …
A single installation
multi-site with full functionality
centralised plugins and themes
Individual sites could have permissions similar to users – master, parent, childWP3 & BP can’t be that far off this functionality – can it?

Participant@themeanwhile – you can enable or disable the various components so if you want Activities only, enable that and disable other components. After you activate BuddyPress, go to the new BuddyPress menu item on the left column of dashboard, and go to
a) General Settings – these are your choices
Base profile group name:
Full Name field name:
Disable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing?: Yes No
Hide admin bar for logged out users?: Yes No
Disable avatar uploads? (Gravatars will still work): Yes No
Disable user account deletion?: Yes No
Disable global forum directory?: Yes No
Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts?: Yes No
Default User Avatar – For users without a custom avatar of their own, you can either display a generic logo or a generated one based on their email addressb) Component Setup
Activity Streams – Allow users to post activity updates and track all activity across the entire site.
Enabled Disabled
Blog Tracking – Tracks blogs, blog posts and blogs comments for a user across a WPMU installation.
Enabled Disabled
bbPress Forums – Activates bbPress forum support within BuddyPress groups or any other custom component.
Enabled Disabled
Friends – Allows the creation of friend connections between users.
Enabled Disabled
Groups – Let users create, join and participate in groups.
Enabled Disabled
Private Messaging – Let users send private messages to one another. Site admins can also send site-wide notices.
Enabled Disabled
Extended Profiles – Activates customizable profiles and avatars for site users.

Participant@xevo Yes the same can be done with post types within the same blog I guess i was using a whole other sub blog to act like a “post type” in a way…it hasn’t really been too much work from my end to do it the way i said but yea I will be moving to post types and I imagine it would be the same amount of work with creating the frontend form for users to add videos and customizing post templates to display the posts and archives in more of a video layout….still would need to figure out how to show author’s video posts separate from other post types to display as “my-library” and customize video post archives templates different from other post-type archives to give you the video community look and feel that @cavamondo is referring to. you can see sample on the channel section of my page.
bpalbum could work as well in a limited way, I like the control and all the options of using Posts, archives and authors. You would have to put in all that work you talked about into figuring how to manipulate all the user bp album videos for the site to display them in other pages, sections and search, when you could just inherit that from wp and inherit plugins too like ratings.

ParticipantTo change the base profile field group name, go to your WP Dashboard. Under BuddyPress > General settings, you’ll see the first entry allows you to change this.
To set the Activity Stream as your home page, go to your WP Dashboard again. Scroll down to the bottom and, under Settings > Reading, you’ll see the first entry allows you to choose what to display on the front page. Click “A Static Page”, then from the dropdown, select “Activity Stream”. Note that you’ll have to create a page for your Posts Page.
To “lock people out” of certain content areas, you could customize your child-theme templates to display what you want to logged-in/non-logged-in users like here: http://pastebin.com/KFeEAh1Z. Or you could try the s2member plugin: http://www.primothemes.com/post/s2member-membership-plugin-with-paypal/
Hope this helps!

Keymaster“You keep telling me that real names are used through out the installation and I am telling you that they are not. The members directory, one of the most important sections of this thing for any organization, list users by their username.”
It doesn’t*. We’re looking at http://testbp.org/members/. ‘registered’ and ‘last active’ will order by those values, and it displays real names. If you order by ‘alphabetical’, however, I see a few issues:
*Page 1 of results is not sorting properly, at least on testbp.org; something weird is going on. But if you click through to page 5, for example, it does sort by real name correctly (“Aaron Brazell, Aaron Castaneda, Aaron Chaote”, etc). If you look at the link to their profile, that uses the username (as is designed), and in the case of Aaron Brazell, as an example, you see his username is nothing like his real name. But not on page 1.
This is obviously a bug, as the latter pages work, and this is useful feedback. The BuddyPress developers can only fix bugs if people report them (https://trac.buddypress.org/).
@peterverkooijen – as far as I know, none of your posts have been deleted. Some threads closed, yes, but not deleted. I’ve noticed too that some older forum posts are really hard to find since this site was updated a few weeks ago (so I look through Google, as BuddyPress search still sucks).

Participant@dennis_h, amen, preach it brother!
Yes, forums are very useful and popular, but they are just another way of displaying a conversation. The basic building blocks for blogs, forums or social networks are the same:
users
posts
commentsIf you want a traditional forum view, you could probably create that in your theme.
There is no reason to bolt an external forum script on to Buddypress, with its own database tables etc. It only creates synchronization problems and confusion for the end user.
I have argued this before here and elsewhere.

Just to be clear, on this account I agree wholeheartedly. Forum functionality is one thing, but a separate script all together to make a forum when you’ve already got WordPress and BuddyPress put together with their respective building blocks at your disposal, that seems like a flawed development practice to me.With WordPress, 3.0 and its custom post types in particular, we’ve got all we need already. This is what I tried to get across on my ‘rethinking posts’ thread.
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/miscellaneous/forum/topic/re-thinking-posts/May 12, 2010 at 9:18 pm #77882peterverkooijen
Participant@3sixty (“The irony of “BuddyPress shouldn’t be about forums”, and “if you want a forum, don’t use BP” and “bbPress is a parasite in BP…” is that the FORUM is the center point of activity here on buddypress.org”)
There’s nothing ironic about that. Traditional forums are very useful, but if you want a traditional forum you can install PunBB or bbPress. The point is that bolting a forum onto a social network derails the social networking structure. Mixing forum and social networking is the cause of a lot of the confusion and interface problems that this thread is about.
Social networking sites (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) imho evolved from traditional forums; they are a next generation paradigm in how to structure a web community, with more emphasis on individual members, less on forum topics. That’s also why I keep complaining about anonymous usernames and the underdeveloped member management in BP.
It has been depressing to see in recent months that people who primarily want a traditional forum are taking over Buddypress, pushing it back into the older forms. Mixing these different approaches to structuring a community does not make it a more versatile product. It’s the kitchen sink. It’s becomes an unwieldy mess.
As explained earlier in this thread, you can get forum-like functionality following existing Buddypress/Wordpress structures. You can display blog posts and comments in a forum structure. You could probably do it in a template. There is absolutely no need to bolt on an external forum, adding new database tables and functionality that partly overlaps/clashes with existing functionality.
Automattic needs to go back to the basic building blocks – users, posts, comments – and make sure they are solid, remove redundancies etc. And then develop different ways to connect those elements and display the data in different user interfaces; blog, social network, forum, microblogging, social bookmarking, etc.

ParticipantPART 2 – DEFEATING SPAMMERS
In the last post I covered why and how spammers attack BP installations. This post will cover how I propose to counter them.
Fast Attacks -vs- Slow Attacks
There are two basic kinds of spam attacks that get run on social networks: “fast” or “flood” attacks, and “slow” attacks.
In a fast attack, the spammer signs up for an account on the site, then sends thousands of messages as quickly as possible.
Obviously, the site admin will be deluged with complaints about the spam user and quickly delete their account …but in the hours (or days) it takes the admin to respond, hundreds and hundreds of people will read the spam messages. Then the spammer signs up for another account, and repeats the process.
In a “slow” attack, the spammer signs up for *hundreds* of accounts on the system, often over a period of many months, and only sends out spam messages one at a time …often days, weeks, or months apart.
“Slow” attacks are very difficult to counter using automation …at least without annoying legitimate users.
The best way people have come up with so far is just a “report spam” button which, when clicked, reports the member to an admin so they can investigate it and if necessary delete the account. This will be implemented as part of @francescolaffi ‘s BP content moderation plugin in a couple of months.
Unfortunately, a “report spam” button doesn’t work well against “fast” attacks.
This is because:
a) There is a delay while the admin responds to manually submitted spam reports, or,
b) When a consensus scheme is used (if X users report a member their account gets suspended), there is a delay while enough votes are accumulated to flag the member as a spammer.During that time, people are reading the spam messages and the spammer is winning.
Goals of Proposed BP Core Anti-Spam Mods
The goal of the proposed core modifications is to counter “fast” attacks by the following means:
1) To make it difficult for a spammer to create large numbers of member accounts using automated means.
2) To make it difficult for a spammer that already has a member account to use automated means to:
a) send large volumes of PM’s
b) send large numbers of friend requests
c) create large numbers of groups
d) create large numbers of group posts
e) post large numbers of comments
f) post large numbers of status updates3) To accomplish 1) and 2) without being annoying to legitimate users.
4) To make the system configurable, so it can be adapted to the needs of the site …for example: visually impaired users, or display on mobile phones.
5) To make the system “on by default” and “secure by default”
How We Can Accomplish This
1) New User Sign-up
a) Add a captcha on the new account sign-up screen.
b) If the “user” gets the captcha wrong on the first try, require *TWO* captchas to be solved before they can proceed. (If the odds of a bot solving ONE captcha with OCR are 1 in 100, the odds of the bot solving TWO captchas with OCR are 1 in 10,000. This is a technique Gmail uses.)…set X to be a random number on each installation between 3 and 7…
c) If the user gets X captchas wrong in a row, block their IP for a random amount of time (15 minutes to 2 hours). (This is what Craigslist does)
d) If the user fails X captchas *again* after being blocked, permanently ban their IP and post it to akismet.
e) If a locally banned IP tries to sign-up, don’t throw an “error page”. Completely ignore the request and don’t send anything.
f) If an akismet banned IP tries to sign up, require *TWO* captchas to be solved on the first try, and if they get X captchas wrong in a row, permanently ban their IP and repost it to akismet.
g) Add an option field to the admin menu that limits the number of accounts that can be created per IP address. By default, set it at 2.2) Existing User Sign-In
a) Use a “normal” password box on first sign-in attempt.
b) If the member gets their password wrong on the first try, require them to solve a captcha on the second try. Offer password recovery option.
c) If the member gets their password wrong on the second try, require *TWO* captchas to be solved before they can proceed. Offer password recovery option.…set X to be a random number on each installation between 3 and 7…
d) If the user gets X logins / captchas wrong in a row, block the visitor’s IP for a random amount of time (15 minutes to 2 hours).
3) Private Messages
a) Add a field to the user table that allows PM limiting to be bypassed or set to a unique value on a user-per-user basis.
b) Add three option fields on the admin menu: allow “X” messages to be sent every 24 hours, averaged over the past “Y” hours with “Z” hysteresis
…when BP is installed, randomly set X, Y, and Z to allow a daily maximum of between 18 and 24 messages, averaged over between 2 and 24 hours, +/- 3 messages.
c) If the maximum is exceeded, require the member to solve a captcha before they can send another PM.
d) If they get the first captcha wrong, require them to solve two captchas before they can send another PM.…set R to be a random number on each installation between 3 and 7…
e) If the user gets R captchas wrong in a row, block their IP for a random amount of time (15 minutes to 2 hours). (This is what Craigslist does)
f) If the user fails R captchas *again* after being blocked, permanently ban their IP and post it to akismet.
g) If a locally banned IP tries to visit the site, don’t throw an “error page”. Completely ignore the request and don’t send anything.Consider how difficult the algorithm above makes it to send automated messages. A spammer can’t just send “12 messages a day” or “1 message an hour” and avoid triggering the system. Every BP installation will have a unique combination that will cause it to trip. Yet for a “normal” user, the system will hardly ever trip, and if it does, it takes all of 5 seconds to enter a captcha and continue. And the system can be bypassed entirely for edge cases, like paid advertisers or site news.
3) Friend Requests
a) Create a config option in BuddyPress that allows the admin to remove the member’s directory with one click. Disable the member directory by “default” on new installs. In my experience, the only people that use the member’s directory (in its default state, on a socially oriented site) are Spammers, Marketers, and Competitors. There’s a reason Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter do not have “global” member directories.
b) Implement same scheme as private messages.4) Group Creation
a) Add a field to the user table that allows Group limiting to be bypassed or set to a unique value on a user-per-user basis.
b) Add an option field on the admin menu that sets a maximum number of groups that can be created by a user. By default, set it at 5.5) Group Posts
a) Add a field to the user table that allows group post limiting to be bypassed or set to a unique value on a user-per-user basis.
b) Create a “whitelist” field on the admin page that allows “trusted” media sharing URL’s like YouTube, Revver, Flickr, etc to be bypassed in spam protection.
c) Create an option that automatically “scrubs” URL’s and email addresses from group posts if they are not on the whitelist. Not just “nofollow” …complete removal. This will stop 90% of abuse dead in its tracks, because most spammers are just trying to get traffic to a site or replies to an email.
d) If the system detects a URL or email address embedded in a message, and it’s not on the whitelist, require a captcha to be solved before allowing the post.
e) If they get the first captcha wrong, require them to solve two captchas before approving the post.…set R to be a random number on each installation between 3 and 7…
f) If the user gets R captchas wrong in a row, block their IP for a random amount of time (15 minutes to 2 hours).
g) If the user fails R captchas *again* after being blocked, permanently ban their IP and post it to akismet.
h) If a locally banned IP tries to visit the site, don’t throw an “error page”. Completely ignore the request and don’t send anything.i) For posts that do not contain a URL or email address, run the post through akismet. If it passes, approve the post. If it fails, require a captcha to be solved before allowing the post.
j) If they get the first captcha wrong, require them to solve two captchas before approving the post.
k) If the user gets R captchas wrong in a row, block their IP for a random amount of time (15 minutes to 2 hours).
l) If the user fails R captchas *again* after being blocked, permanently ban their IP and post it to akismet.
m) If a locally banned IP tries to visit the site, don’t throw an “error page”. Completely ignore the request and don’t send anything.6) Comments
a) Create an admin option that only allows users to comment on their *friend’s* items. Activate it by default on new BP installations.
7) Status Updates
a) Add a field to the user table that allows status update limiting to be bypassed or set to a unique value on a user-per-user basis.
b) Create a “whitelist” field on the admin page that allows “trusted” media sharing URL’s like YouTube, Revver, Flickr, etc to be bypassed in spam protection.
c) Create an option that automatically “scrubs” URL’s and email addresses from status updates if they are not on the whitelist. Not just “nofollow” …complete removal. This will stop 90% of abuse dead in its tracks, because most spammers are just trying to get traffic to a site or replies to an email.
d) If the system detects a URL or email address embedded in a message, and it’s not on the whitelist, require a captcha to be solved before allowing the activity stream post.
e) If they get the first captcha wrong, require them to solve two captchas before approving the activity stream post.…set R to be a random number on each installation between 3 and 7…
f) If the user gets R captchas wrong in a row, block their IP for a random amount of time (15 minutes to 2 hours).
g) If the user fails R captchas *again* after being blocked, permanently ban their IP and post it to akismet.
h) If a locally banned IP tries to visit the site, don’t throw an “error page”. Completely ignore the request and don’t send anything.i) For activity stream posts that do not contain a URL or email address, run the post through akismet. If it passes, approve the post. l) If the user fails R captchas *again* after being blocked, permanently ban their IP and post it to akismet.
m) If a locally banned IP tries to visit the site, don’t throw an “error page”. Completely ignore the request and don’t send anything.8 ) In All Cases
a) When a member account is banned, or repeatedly triggers spam protection measures, send an alert to the site administrator.
b) Allow admin alerts to be disabled if necessary, example: DDOS attack against the site.9) CONCLUSION
While the list of modifications above may look incredibly complicated, really, it’s not.
I’d say “worst case” it’s about a week of work to research and make these modifications. Then we can push it out into beta testing with all the other new code to give it a proper shakedown.
I’m sure there are plenty of ways the algorithms above could be improved, so please go ahead and post your feedback!
Thanks!

Participant@r-a-y is similar because it seems that all links take me to the main blog author template which is cool. but I’d like to keep things as is and be selective with what links i send to the author page so instead, from my profile home, add ‘quicklinks’ to the various subblogs i’ve authored on not only the main blog.
I was able to link to the individual blogs users are admin on, by using bp_has_blogs(‘user_id=’ . $bp->displayed_user->id == $bp->loggedin_user->id) but i guess that only works for being an admin of a blog. what if user has contributed to another blog on the system, how to link over to the author posts template for that user, is the thing

ParticipantSlowly I am beginning to realize that Buddy press is not a straight-out-of-the-box solution. It is not like wordpress. In order to create a proper Buddypress community you really have to *develop* your community.
The negative with this is that the default install is confusing. Comments/updates in the activity stream, forum posts, comments on forum posts, comments on blog posts. Not only do you have different types of comments but you also have meta comments. No wonder things are confusing!
I am tempted to use an analogy of Linux vs Apple. You can do a lot with linux, but all the choices may lead to confusion and an unproductive environment. Apple on the other hand knows the importance of keeping things simple. The iPad is an example of this. It has less features than regular computers, and this makes it easier to use and less confusing. It does fewer things but it does them well.
So what has Apple and Linux got to do with Buddypress? I believe that Buddypress should have several options. (as it has today), but it should be easier to customize Buddypress in order to suit every individual communities` needs. You develop the site to suit you needs. Use what your community needs and remove everything else. Less noise and less confusion and more Apple like

As it is right now, in order to really customize the default install, you have to know PHP etc. This is good if you are a programmer, but unfortunately not all of us are. It seems to me like a lot of the BPusers are non-programmers who just want to add a social layer to their WP site. If Automattic wants to cater to these people, it will be necessary to make it easy to customize BP without having to dive into the code.
I suggest expanding on the options (toggles) in the Admin panel in order to customize the BP install more. That way you can really streamline your community experience.
Example:
– disable commenting for ALL activity-items at the homepage, or choose which one you want to disable. (forum/blogs etc)
– disable activity streams on groups (if admin wants to use forums instead.)
-Choose what is displayed in the activity feed. (Friend connections, blog posts etc)What is apparent, just by reading the previous posts are that we all have different needs:
“Built-in forums are increasingly clashing with commenting on blogs and wires and the social networking structure. There is no reason to have old-fashioned forums in a next generation social network.”
vs
“I think it’s best to strip out sitewide activity stream as well as the groups activity stream. Force users to post content in forums and use their own profile activity stream to post a message to a specific user.”
People want different things, so why not let them have a choice. The new Bp.org is proof that all these different features are useful. They all have their advantages.(although it could use some more improvements to streamline the experience)
I agree with RAYs view:
“For groups, you can either go one way – embrace the activity stream or embrace the forums. It’s not the best thing to try and have it both ways. But this is a decision the BP admin should make (which it is right now). At the end of the day, BP gives you free reign to customize your community all you want.”SUMMARY: My thoughts are that Buddypress needs an easier and more complete way of designing the community through the admin panel.

ParticipantI am shocked, however, that Andy left on the Activity stream Reply function for forum posts which which, by design, bifurcate the support conversations due to those users who live more in the Activity stream than Groups
I use etivite-rich’s @nuprn1 (man I wish he had an easier username to remember, display and ‘real’ username) subplugin for Activity stream replies to forum posts that show up inline (ajax-expandable) to the forum posts themselves. It’s perfect, and keeps the conversation from fracturing. Preserves hierarchy in replies, too.
Don’t expect @andy‘s going to do that here, though.
What @mikepratt said is exactly right, though. I’m looking forward to seeing some serious useability changes as a result of using the current BP here. As it stands, and much as I think BP is great stuff, I think it’s a poor fit for the purpose. I am very sympathetic to my users’ concerns and complaints during a recent alpha run with BP for an existing community, even more than I was before, about being confused about how the parts fit together (until I seriously changed things around, changed terminology with the language file, and beefed up forums functionality a lot).

Participantr-a-y, i started with that 2 months ago. Honestly, I’m frustrated. It seems like I can’t even throw money at this issue. I have an elance job post and the folks who’ve replied can’t do what I’m asking…I’ve posted that I’m willing to pay for this answer here at BuddyPress.org…and no one has responded…and buddypress.org has the forum categories working here…and to date has not shared the procedure and code that could allow users to do the same.
I’ve been trying to release a basic install of BuddyPress that works like BuddyPress.org for one year. I have 19 years experience as a technical writer (albeit off and on), and I’ve offered to help BuddyPress with documentation in exchange for assistance. I’ve offered to make videos, and yes, I’ve posted in more than one thread. I’m a proficient “hack,” so to speak, and am happy to mess with code, however, I’m not a programmer and I just don’t understand the back end of BuddyPress the way you do…
..can you expain why you haven’t shared the code? Or rather, can you just share the code? I mean, asking me not to bump several posts…after months of my effort in trying to do something most likely so simple that it’s just figuring out a file path and the right file in which to call a particular function…which is really hard for me to figure out…but most likely you and several readers of this post
know how to do and are just not sharing
…is just frustrating…
can you relate?
I mean, I’ve been at this for a year and what I’ve wanted is:
1) a BuddyPress install that works like BuddyPress.org, which means:
1.1) the forum works the way the BuddyPress.org forum works
1.2) the look and feel is consistent for the main and user blogs
So, maybe I’m wrong, maybe this isn’t easy for you…maybe you don’t have access to the code…or there is something else going on…but geeze can you relate at all to how frustrating it is to be sitting here, and, my assumption (which could be wrong) is that all you’d need to do is share a few PHP files and some quick instructions, and I’d be off and running…
…and a few other folks have gotten in touch with me with a) willingness to split the costs of figuring this out b) asking me to get in touch with them when and if I do wind up receiving an answer.
…so those folks might be shy about coming out with their desires, because they don’t want to be treated harshly.
…and frankly, how am I supposed to feel with you posting
“Use the bbPress admin backend to create your forum categories.
/yourdomain.com/your-bbpress-install/bb-admin/”
…yeah…ha ha…like I wasn’t back there 2 months ago…you know…it’s hard not to get sarcastic and just say “thanks for not helping” you know?
…honestly, how do you expect me to take your reply?
I mean, are you guys going to share the code and procedure for creating what could be called “Main themes” “Forum Categories” or “Sub Boards”
and not just creating them in the backend, because that is really easy…
…are you going to share the code and procedure for creating and displaying them or not?
It’s hard for me not to be upset about this issue…because it’s been so incredibly long…and I just feel like the developers, for whom this is likely a super easy issue, are really just “code hogging,” which frankly, I find simply mean. Especially when I’ve sincerely offered to create documentation in exchange for help…and I’m a documentation professional…so I’m not talking about slacker beginner docs.
So really, can you give me a straight up yes or no? Cuz this issue is really tiring, and I don’t feel like beating a dead horse anymore…
…if you won’t reveal the procedure and code, please explain why.
…if you won’t reveal the procedure and code, please help me figure out where i can get the answers to these issues either at a developer forum or in a paid coding community… i mean, is wpmu dev the right place where people would share both code and a procedure so that folks can move forward instead of going round and round in circles?
It would really help if you could clear these issues up, cuz it’s also tiring for me to continue expecting to receive help (in a positive environment), and well, I just might be wrong about my expectations for help and I might be wrong about what this forum offers.
I just figured you’d be willing to share the code and a procedure.
…ok…enough circling around the same issue…it’s clear what I need, what I want to do, what I’ve offered repeatedly to get it…so I’ll look forward to any replies this post receives and any assistance I can get in displaying forum categories.
