Moderator$some_field is a variable that you create.
Its value is whatever you assign to it, iow. whatever is to the right of the = sign.
The name of the variable can be whatever you want, as long as it’s unique.
It could be $bongos_ahoy or $smelly_dog, etc.
This is basic coding and not really appropriate for this forum.November 6, 2014 at 1:25 pm #228306In reply to: Is it better to use a Buddypress specific theme?

ParticipantI found it much easier to build BP with a specific BP theme. All the groups and forums and profiles etc are layed out much much better than the default BP plugin. 🙂

ParticipantSince BP 1.6 there has been a constant that defines this.
Just add
define ( 'BP_GROUPS_DEFAULT_EXTENSION', 'forum' );to your functions.php or bp-custom.php file. From then on, when you click to go to a group, it will display the group’s forum page instead of the normal ‘Home’ activity landing page.

ModeratorAt 3M users the issue is the configuration of your servers.
So, yes, BP can handle it IF you know how to setup and manage an array of servers.
Management and setup of such an array requires good server administrator skills.
And is way beyond the scope of this forum.>the expected database size
There is no way to give you a number.
Here’s an adjective: Big.
The biggest table would be the activity table.November 4, 2014 at 10:35 am #228204In reply to: Profile BuddyPress

ModeratorThat’s how your theme styles the page. It’s done via HTML and CSS. Regarding your question, you have a few options:
1. Write HTML and CSS yourself so that the style looks the same. See here and here for a guide to get you started
2. Find a theme from the Themes Directory that does this for you. Note that you’ll want a theme that includes styles for the BuddyPress profile page (unfortunately, there’s not many around right now but more and more are slowly being released)
3. Hire a designer to write some custom styles. The BP Jobs Forum is a good place to start if you decide to take this option.October 31, 2014 at 10:56 pm #228053In reply to: Pointing to the wrong url
@mercime
Participant@elprebsi Last time I checked, Canvas is not compatible with BuddyPress. Confirm with canvas theme support/forums whether latest version is compatible with BP. Check if issue is resolved when using BuddyPress and Twenty Fourteen or any of the WP Default themes only.

Sarcasm will not get you far on this forum so how do you figure you can fire anyone being that this forum is volunteer based? If you would like to hire a pro then post it on the jobs board here: https://buddypress.org/support/forum/plugin-forums/bp-jobs-board/
or here: http://jobs.wordpress.net/https://buddypress.org/support/reply/228048/edit/ Then you can be more demanding because you are paying someone to fix your issues.
If you expect volunteer help from here then I suggest that you refrain from using sarcastic remarks on the forums otherwise you may push people away from helping you because nobody likes a smart a** and if you are so smart then you can fix your own problems! Happy Halloween!October 30, 2014 at 4:14 pm #227957Tanner Moushey
ParticipantHey @professornate! Thanks for posting in the forums!
The issue you are seeing here is a result of some BuddyPress assets not loading. The site is throwing a Javascript error and that is preventing the page from loading.
First thing to try here is to deactivate and reactivate the BuddyPress plugin. If the issue persists, try changing your theme to one of the default WordPress themes (say, twentytwelve). I’m virtually certain that one of those steps will fix the issue. Let me know if it doesn’t.
If the issue is fixed by switching the theme to twentytwelve, try switching it back to your current theme. If the issue comes back, then there is something up with the theme and you should try re-installing it.

ParticipantHi @henrywright,
I tested the plugin “BuddyPress Component Stats”, it seems very good, but for “Blogs”, “Forum” and “Group”, it not shows data.
Why?The second plugin is very old and I think that not works with buddyPress 2.x
Thanks.

Participantthis issue is posted all across their forums and no-one has ever received a decent reply from BP dev’s.
here’s just a few of the many i’ve read trying to solve this over the past week:
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/registration-reload-error-lets-get-this-solved/
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/buddypress-refreshing-on-register-to-blank-page/
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/buddypress-register-page-not-working-just-refresh/
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/impossible-to-registerbuddypress-registration-process-broken/
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/user-registration-issue-submit-brings-refreshed-page/
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/can-not-register-since-upgrade-to-1-2-1-it-just-refreshes-the-main-page/
http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/cant-register-new-bp-account-helpthe two possible workarounds i found didnt work with the latest release. This is clearly an issue many people are having with Buddypress and have been for a long time. it would be really helpful if the devs could work out what is causing it.
From my reading i’m suspicious that it is conflicts with junk left in the database by other plugins, which have since been deleted. but that’s not based on much actual understanding of the issue – and i wouldnt know how to repair this without deleting my site.

ParticipantHi Shane, I have 1 more question for you 🙂
I need the exact same function to redirect groups home activity page so that I can add something like this url siteurl/groups/home/ to a button on my site and this redirects members to their groups activity feed. or in the forum what is known as the home button.
think you could help with my last request?
October 28, 2014 at 12:45 pm #227833In reply to: Suggested Plugin
shanebp
ModeratorI’m not aware of such a plugin.
And would be surprised if it exists, since you want something that adds bridge functionality to 2 specific plugins.
You’ll probably need to write some custom code.
You should ask on the support forums for those 2 plugins.

ModeratorThe event manager plugin has a search function.
For additional questions about that plugin, you should use their support forums.October 27, 2014 at 9:55 pm #227801In reply to: Comment Notifications

Thank you so much. I haven’t had much luck with answers on this forum until you replied.October 27, 2014 at 7:06 pm #227795In reply to: redirect buddypress groups page to forum page

Participantso you are redirected to your group forum where you see previous topics and can submit a new topic?
I added the code [edited] in a file titled bp-custom.php and put in in my wp-contents/plugins/ folder and still when I click on siteurl/groups it just shows my group names which I still have to click.
Any idea? Would it help to send my url offline?
thanks …October 27, 2014 at 4:43 pm #227788In reply to: redirect buddypress groups page to forum page

Participant🙁 nothing changed still displays a list of the groups instead of linking to group forum.
That being said the path I have on the post button is siteurl/groups
I have attempted to put my-groups in the url but doesn’t work.Wonder if I am missing something. If you have a test site does this work for you when linking to a group? also to clarify I am adding this to theme function.php, is that the correct spot to add it.
Thank you…October 27, 2014 at 4:34 pm #227787In reply to: redirect buddypress groups page to forum page

ModeratorMy function was hooking too early.
And using name instead of slug.Try:
function my_group_forum_redirect() { if ( bp_is_groups_directory() ) { $user_id = get_current_user_id(); $args = array( 'user_id' => $user_id, 'populate_extras' => false ); $groups = groups_get_groups( $args ); $groups = $groups['groups']; $group_slug = ''; foreach( $groups as $group ) { $group_slug = $group->slug; } if( $group_slug != '' ) { wp_redirect( home_url() . '/groups/' . $group_slug . '/forum/' ); exit; } } } add_action( 'wp', 'my_group_forum_redirect' );October 27, 2014 at 3:40 pm #227786In reply to: redirect buddypress groups page to forum page

ParticipantThanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it 🙂
The answer is each member will only below to 1 group.
I added this code to the functions.php file but when I bring up my url/groups I still have to click on my group name to enter the forum.Any other thoughts?

ModeratorCan a user belong to more than one group?
If not, try this (untested):function my_group_forum_redirect() { if ( bp_is_groups_directory() ) { $user_id = get_current_user_id(); $args = array( 'user_id' => $user_id, 'populate_extras' => false ); $groups = groups_get_groups( $args ); $groups = $groups['groups']; $group_name = ''; foreach( $groups as $group ) { $group_name = $group->name; } if( $group_name != '' ) { wp_redirect( home_url() . '/groups/' . $group_name . '/forum/' ); exit; } } } add_action( 'init', 'my_group_forum_redirect' );October 27, 2014 at 1:12 pm #227778In reply to: redirect buddypress groups page to forum page

ParticipantThanks for your reply here .. only problem is I can’t define a url because every member will be associated to a different forum.
Any suggestions?October 27, 2014 at 9:20 am #227770In reply to: Comment Notifications

ParticipantHey @chatty24, thanks. Buddypress actually added this functionality to the latest update (activity mentions) but It would be great to have a more convenient bbpress forums mentioning system.
