In reply to: HEY! Where did the BP-Media support forum go??
modemlooper
ModeratorWell this site sucks for using it as a plugins support forum when you are just a user and have no way to edit or delete or close topics in YOUR OWN PLUGINS SUPPORT FORUM. This is why I closed my plugin forums here and created a site to handle support.

Participant@skimpy2 if you’re referring to the Group Hierarchy plugin, then do post at plugin’s forum which the plugin dev checks out https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-group-hierarchy/forum/

ParticipantYes, obviously.
But the only way to find the forum now is when somebody gives that link to a user. Previously, there was a list of forums on the site, and BP-Media’s support forum was on that list.

Participant“For the time being, your display name needs to be different than your login to update your activity stream.” per JJJ at bottom of this page https://buddypress.org/community/groups/miscellaneous/forum/topic/forum-conduct/
Or, use Google. It’s indexed our forums pretty well. So enter “Buddypress.org anok4u2 keyword-phrase-used” in Google search.

Member@darren I deleted the forums page like you said. But, no forum was available in either bbpress or buddypress, even In components “forum” doesn’t show up anymore. Even after deleting and reinstalling through ftp. Why?
And, now that it won’t create it’s own forum page how do I get “forum” under components?
How do you “Double check that bbpress is using “forums” as the Forums base.” ?
That’s the only thing I didn’t do. Otherwise, I did exactly what you said and got a forum-less plugin.

@mercime
ParticipantIf you’ve revised any of the template files within the 6 BP folders transferred to your ubuntu theme folder during the compatibility process, then you have to delete those 6 BP folders within wp-content/themes/ubuntu/ and re-run Appearance > BP compatibility again to get fresh new folders.
The following instruction involves creating two files and uploading to your wp-content/themes/ubuntu as well as adding necessary styles then other recommended styles.
1. Open up your theme’s header.php file with text editor and Save As > header-buddypress.php
2. Open up header-buddypress.php and add the following at the very BOTTOM of the file:
``
Note: if there are errors on page later, remove the line “ from header-buddypress.php
3. Save and upload to server wp-content/themes/ubuntu/ folder4. Create a new file sidebar-buddypress.php and in it add:
``
5. Save and upload to wp-content/themes/ubuntu/ folder6. Open up your theme’s style.css and you must add the following at bottom of file:
`/* My BuddyPress styles */
body.activate #content,
body.activity #content,
body.blogs #content,
body.friends #content,
body.forums #content,
body.groups #content,
body.members #content,
body.messages #content,
body.profile #content,
body.register #content,
body.registration #content,
body.xprofile #content {
background: #ffffff;
padding: 20px;
width: 800px;
}`
7. Save and upload to folder
8. Note: other styles you might want to add after the above styles to remove UL list-styles or tweak some element widths, as needed per assistance with other themes are found in this page https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-dev-bp-template-pack-walkthrough-twenty-ten-bp-1-5/3/December 31, 2011 at 6:36 am #127114In reply to: Can’t create a forum in my groups?

MemberOkay. That’s great. I got rid of it. Thanks. The next thing I need to do is just get people to automatically join a group when they are registered, so they don’t have to create a group to post.
December 30, 2011 at 10:35 pm #80023In reply to: [resolved] turn off site wide forum
@mercime
ParticipantGo to wp-admin dashboard menu BuddyPress > Forums and deactivate sitewide forums.
Then to Plugins > Installed Plugins, deactivate then delete bbPress plugin.
Also remove the Page generated for sitewide forums, if any, in Pages > All Pages. That would go to trash. Go to trash and delete that page permanently.December 30, 2011 at 10:27 pm #127106In reply to: disable activity comment/replies
@mercime
ParticipantIf you want to disable commenting only for forum topics and blog posts in activity stream, then you only need to go to wp-admin menu BuddyPress > Settings and click Yes radio button beside “Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts?”
If you want to totally disable commenting in activity streams and you have a bp-default child theme, copy over https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.5.2/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/entry.php to your child theme folder following directory structure like mychildthemefolder/activity/entry.php then delete lines 54 through 84 as seen in link above. Save file and upload to server.
If you used the BP Template Pack to make your WP theme compatible with BP, open up /activity/entry.php which had been transferred to your WP theme in server during the compatibility process and delete lines as stated above.

MemberThank you @mercime for replying to this. I have now changed my display name so it is completely different from my login name. I went onto WordPress.org and changed it there as well. I’m still not seeing the Topics Started under forum>topics started.
I tried starting a new topic too, but still nothing.

Participant@Hysteriux Sorry if my comment assumed you weren’t familiar with open source projects. I apologize that it came across that way. My point was just to highlight that the shortcomings of the website, descriptions, possibilities, examples, etc are due to BuddyPress being open source that a lot of the descriptions of what it can do are done by volunteers (as you know). BuddyPress currently has a great group of programmers actively working on it, but doesn’t have nearly as many other people working on the “marketing” and “communication” side of it like many of the other large open source projects you mentioned have. This is still a major need in my opinion for the BuddyPress project.
Plus, as you mention, BuddyPress isn’t like many of the other open source projects where it was purpose built for something specific (blogging, forums, etc) or at least that’s not how it’s evolved. So, it’s quite a challenge to describe what BuddyPress can do since it’s being used in so many different ways. I think the Showcase page was/is an attempt at trying to feature the ways BuddyPress can be used: https://buddypress.org/showcase/
Outside of the showcase, I’m not sure anyone’s come up with a better way to show the various permutations that are possible with BuddyPress and how it’s being used or no one’s had the time to implement a new way to communicate it. I think the best way is to try it out and play with it to see.
“I’m just kindly asking for examples of constructive, every-day use of it. What the devs actually intended BP’s role to be and function to fill. “
Since you asked so kindly, here’s my take on a few ways that BuddyPress is being used (in no particular order):
-Group Centric – Communities organized around a BuddyPress group and interaction in the group while leveraging other things like profiles, messaging, etc lightly.
-Forum Centric – Communities organized around Forum discussions while leveraging other things like profiles, messaging, etc lightly.
-Blog Centric – Adding community features around a blog or network of blogs.
-Profile Centric – The profile is the centerpiece of the community and you create interactions between profiles.
-Wiki (plugin) centric – Some take a BuddyPress plugin and make that the core of their website (like the wiki plugin) and then lightly use the other things like profiles, messaging, etc lightly.I’m sure there are more creative ways it’s being used. I hope this helps you better understand different ways to use BuddyPress. Another place to see some real world examples is: http://www.bpinspire.com/

KeymasterFor site wide forums, it’s admin menu is in wp-admin as “Forums” item. If you can’t see it, go to your plugins and make sure you have bbPress 2.x activated.

MemberI’m also new to BP, and i also experienced it as a chaotic useless mess. But now, i get the logic. BP is not a ready to use tool. It depends on what you need for your site. It has some possibilities that “may” be handy for your site. If you install all of it’s components without really thinking before…it will overwhelm you. Install it, try things out, one at the time. Think how it can improve your site ‘or not’. Maybe you’re better of with a standard forum.
