Not right now. Although, WP is now working on the post by email for WordPress posts/comments. Once they refine that process, I’ll be very surprised if someone doesn’t build this type of functionality on the backs of that work.

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/jet-quickpress/
Which, even if you do not allow creation of sub-blogs will allow users to post to main blog – in effect making the single blog a multi-author site. You either set all new users as Contributors at least (you need to approve each post before it gets published) or as Authors (users get to publish asap).

Why not just use a standalone installation of bbPress with a matching theme? bbPress is also coming up as a plugin for WordPress but not anytime soon. So I would suggest you to use bbPress 0.9 and theme it to match with your site ;)
By bbPress 0.9 you get better performance, more plugins working and you can anytime upgrade it to later version 1.0+ or the upcoming bbPress WP-plugin.

Hi guys, thanks in advance for any help. Hoping its somthing obvious.

I’ve installed BP on my site recently. I can’t remember if it was before or after that, but in the past few days I changed the site directory from http://www.citizengame.co.uk/wp to the root (so http://www.citizengame.co.uk).

All my own links work fine (with the exception of screenshots which I guess I’ll have to re-link myself). But whenver I use the admin bar in Buddypress, they don’t work. The link brings me to http://www.citizengame.co.uk/members/danny/profile/public/ and a Page Not Found error. However if I put the /wp into that address (making it http://www.citizengame.co.uk/wp/members/danny/profile/public/) then the link works fine. PROFILE, MESSAGES and FRIENDS don’t work, but any non-profile links (such as GROUPS and ACTIVITY) work just fine and use the correct links (without the /wp)

I’ve checked the plugin files and the database for any residual “/wp” references, but nothing is there that would explain why ONLY the profile buddypress admin links aren’t pickung up on the new permalinks. I’ve tried

The curveball in this is that I don’t have a htaccess.dist file on the server (deleted by accident – i know, really dumb).
If its worth anything my .htacess file reads as follows (seems a bit light, right? no BP references):

    # BEGIN WordPress

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index.php$ – [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    # END WordPress

You can also look at simple:press – some work has been done integrating that with BuddyPress

@lisa – I share your frustration with the BuddyPress approach to forums; every client we have worked with (6 in total now) has asked for standard forums to be integrated, and not the BuddyPress Group / Forum approach.

The BuddyPress Group / Forum idea might be an interesting technical approach (and logical from a data modelling point of view), but unfortunately doesn’t seem to have been an end user requirements driven decision.

The best approach to get full functioning standards forums (working with a BuddyPress site) is to disable the BuddyPress forums (a simple checkbox in the admin system), and install your forum solution separately – you’ll then want to ensure you have single sign on, and integration with the activity stream – there is some work documented already to do this with simple:press and bbPress (search on their community forums), but I’m not aware of an out of the box fully functioning solution.

Of course, you’ll also want to design your theme to seamlessly integrate the forums.

[aside: I noticed an announcement re: bbPress being moved into WordPress as a plugin. The announcement also said it was being coded by @jjj, one of the core BuddyPress deveIopers. I don’t know how this will affect the functionality of bbPress (more or less featured?), or whether it will integrate a standalone forums solution into BuddyPress by default. Any more info on this @djpaul or @jjj?]

I have been looking at buddypress since version 1 and every time I hope for improvement and every time get disappointed at the focus of the developers.

Most of the strength that wordpress has, buddypress is lacking. It’s not simple and user friendly and lacks basic needs for a forum community. In more than 1 year buddypress has only 187 member. Too bad.

I wish I was a great coder like the people behind wordpress, but I am not. If I was I would definitely contribute to buddypress.

The default BuddyPress theme, under bp-themes, is the correct place. Any other themes go into wp-content/themes/ as usual. There’s code-magic that makes the WordPress theme page look in the bp-theme folders for the default theme.

I believe your problem is your install path. To quote, “WP installed as a subdirectory (mainsite.com/members).” BuddyPress uses the url “/members/” for its members component. BuddyPress gets confused when you install it in a directory with the same name as one if its components (it can’t parse the URL).

To fix: either reinstall WordPress into the root of your site, or in another directory that’s not called “members”, or try putting this into your wp-config:

    define ( ‘BP_MEMBERS_SLUG’, ‘users’ );

This will change BuddyPress’ “members” URL to “users”, so http://example.com/members/members will look like http://example.com/members/users

VERY NEW – so please excuse my ignorance folks

    Wordpress (Single-user) 3.0
WP installed as a subdirectory (mainsite.com/members)
Was a fresh install of WP 3.0
WP functioning properly – but not used to speak of – was intended for installing Buddypress. Things looked good, defaults, etc.
    Buddypress Version 1.2.5.2, fresh install
There are a number of plugins, but all but BP have been deactivated, problem persists
Problem occurs on default, a Milo theme (i.e. Spyker, Detox, etc.), whatever I try
No mods to the core files.
    No custom functions
bbPress came with the copy of BP I installed
OODA Domains provides my hosting service (is a Godaddy reseller, from what I understand)
It is a Linux, Apache, with PHP 5.x

I installed Buddypress through the WP interface, changed the permalinks. I uploaded themes manually in .zip form through the WP interface.

Everything seems to work fine on the site except I get this when clicking on the “members” tab:
    “Page Not Found
The page you were looking for was not found.”

It’s an error within the buddypress install / not a generic one on my server. When I click on members, this is the syntax in the url: mainwebsite.com/members/members

I don’t see a “members” folder in my install anywhere when I look at folders via FTP. (Besides, obviously my overall WP install in .com/members)

When I had Spyker, Bruce, or New Yorker activated, I also got an error on the front page about a file not being found related to members.

When I click on the other available tabs (activity, groups, forums, about) I don’t get the page not found message. I do get “there were no groups found” but I don’t have any groups or forum posts yet, so that seems quite right. Since I do have some test blog posts up, there is activity and when the activity tab is clicked, you can see those posts.

I’ve done a lot of reading on the forum and via google searches regarding 404 / links / page not found errors. Many seem to involve WPMU and / or a Windows server – I note something like “IIs” re: Windows is mentioned.

Since I have a Linux / Apache install, I am hesitant to apply any fixes related to a Windows server issue.

I note in reading some of the threads here, that @jeffsayre references that Buddypress must “live solely” within the plugins.

Here’s what I’d like to clarify:
The default Buddypress theme is in the plugins folder under /bp-themes
In reading the readme file it SEEMS like I installed additional BP themes as per instructions – it doesn’t specify to install via FTP manually to the bp-themes folder.

WHERE are themes supposed to be installed? In the wp-content/themes folder or in wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes folder?

IF the themes have to be installed to the bp-themes folder how do you activate them? There doesn’t seem to be anyway to force WP via the dashboard to look anywhere specific for the themes.

IF Buddypress is supposed to live solely in the plugins folder, does that mean EVERYTHING needs to be installed in the subfolders in wp-content/plugins/buddypress/ ??

You may be able to ‘bridge’ phpBB, etc, into WordPress, but you’d have to probably rewrite all of the BuddyPress forum integration code. It’s non-trivial.

@intimez I tested https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/jet-quickpress/ on WPMU 2.9.2 and WP 3.0 with BP 1.2.5.2 and it’s working as advertised, it is BP compatible. In addition, if blog creation is enabled, there is a dropdown for which blog/subblog you want your post to be published in. I haven’t tried One Quick Post yet.

    Hello,

I’m just starting to fiddle with BuddyPress and currently don’t see a way to limit who can start groups. Right now, when someone signs up for an account, they are automatically put into the WordPress “Subscriber” role. Seems that this roll can start groups.Should I auto-assign them to a different roll?

    Thanks for any help…

How do I get the Home page link to point to my site address instead of the wordpress address? I reset my wordpress address and site address on Settings>General. I think I have a very simple question for someone with a little experience.

Hi, I’m trying to have an activity stream with two of the action filters. I tried multiple combinations within the bp_has_activities() parameter but it didn’t seem to work. Also, I see that activities is very important to the buddypress experience, is there a way to make custom queries such as in wordpress, for example, I would like to make an activity stream which only shows forum posts in topics you have participated in. Thanks.

Has anyone used either plugin and can tell me which one is good for member to submit post for frontpage and to review by admin first appearing? I also saw some on wordpress plugin directory and it’s very confusing. Why did @apeatling create two different kind?

    Hi all,

I installed buddypress over wp 3.0 and initated teh multi user so now people can have their own blogs on my site. Everything before was smoothe with the buddypress install and still is. However the problem I am having is that when I go to my Blogs and try to create one (me being a dummy enduser with fake test name) the first two screens work, when it asks for blog name. Now after I go to try to create the blog, I see all white and dissordered buttons. I also noticed an error in themes “The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.Name Description
bp-default Stylesheet is missing.” This is from the regular themes, not super admin. So my guess is that the admin panel is missing a css file. Now with all of this, as a super admin or admin I can go into the regular dashboard no problem and new just like the regular wordpress. But the problem is in when I log into the front in and try to create a blog from the user end. Sorry if I don’t make sense. I tried all themes, mainly the basic buddypress default one. That is where it is at now.

    Thanks in advanced

You might want to check out Richard Venable’s Biblefox plugin:
    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/biblefox-for-wordpress/

It’s not exactly a prayer request module, but might be related to what you want.

    Hello World,

Installed a wordpress mu with Buddypress and its working nice. MJRajore.com/community/

The unique problem is Images. Once you have a profile and try to change your profile image with one on your local box the image uploads ok. But does not show.

The same with trying to post. Try to add an image, it uploads but fils to be displayed in the web 2.0 box. But if you choose to edit it then it is visible.

    Strange!

If you care to try it for your self please login as tester password abc123

Please do help and advice. I am a novice with WordPress/mu/Buddypress and Code.

    Thank you.

    Two things come to mind:

    1. Create a new plugin for a customized Prayer component
    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-skeleton-component/
    https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/creating-a-custom-buddypress-component/
    or
    2. Why not create a Group called e.g. “Prayers” or “Prayer Requests” instead so that way you rely only on native BP group creation.
You could change the design/layout of your Prayer Group Pages via a plugin https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-css/ or by adding custom body_class to your Prayer Group Pages and then tweak CSS in your theme’s style.css file

Did you setup pretty permalinks in the WordPress settings?

It is my understanding that blog comments should be showing by default but they are not appearing. Every other activity is appearing. Of course, blog comments are the only thing that come from the original WP install so something isn’t linking up. I’d link to it but it’s on a localhost install.

FWIW, I have made very few customizations to BP so far. It’s mostly all default right now. All components are enabled and all general settings are set to No (meaning I have not disabled anything).

I only added a few profile fields and added a function to change the default avatar.

I am testing this on two different registered users, one admin, one subscriber.

Ok, I have been beating my head against my keyboard trying to figure out how to install buddypress to only one site in my wordpress 3.0 multisite network. Is this even possible? any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    #86148

They do, but only for registered users.

If you have unregistered users posting comments, try BP Include Non-member Comments

    BP Include Non-Member Comments

i wrote an experimental plugin that will replace (or tack on) activity comments to a blog post – (only tested it on the main blog)

    (example: http://etivite.com/2010/04/what-does-it-mean/ )
