Hi r-a-y thank you so much for your help!! Sorry it took so long for me to answer but at first i had no idea how to create a new page template but finally i slowly figured it all out and now it sort of works (its not exacly what i hoped for but i think it will do).
Here is what i did:
- I duplicated my current Page template giving it its own name.
- I duplicated all the “sidebars” (widget areas) i wanted giving them unique names so they only are displayed on the “Commuiny” page.
- I then create a new WordPress page and applied the page template i created in step #1.
- In the WordPress Widget admin i added the BP widgets i wanted to the different Sidebars.
- To get the widgets to look more like how they do on the BP Default Home Theme, i coppied some of the CSS and icons frome base.css to my current CSS.
Im pretty new and pretty sure i made some mistake or broke some kind of “best practice” so please correct me or suggest extra ideas!

Okay, I know developers don’t like to give timeframes for when a new release/product is coming out. But, I so need something like Buddy Press on my single install WordPress site, I need to get an idea if it’s really coming and some general idea of when, before I choose an inferior plugin.
I searched the forum and didn’t really find an answer.

I’m actually dealing with a WordPress MU install, and I’ve been looking for a way to display in our homepage a login form, redirecting the user to his dashboard.
I surfed the net for a while, and the plugin that some people pointed at (here) needs a script which is not avaliable anymore – in the site that the readme.txt points to.
So, as I know that BuddyPress have a simple widget to assign a login-form in any widget-ready area, I was asking if someone knows the way I could use that, without installing the entire Buddy-Press.
I’d like to know how to write that function myself, but I haven’t still the skills.

This is interesting. Originally I felt that WordPress was solely lacking author pages – someone publishes an article and there isn’t an easy way to simply have the author’s name as a clickable link to their profile page with the latest X articles written by that author and links to all articles written. Such a feature would seem standard. When I look at buddypress, it seems like it has a whole bunch of other features but I’m wondering if I’ve missed a part where you can see all the articles a member created. Most users never use blogs, from my experience, and “articles” would seem to be much more useful. Forgive me if what I’m saying has an obvious solution but I haven’t seen it and I would think it should probably come out of the box. Thanks and look forward to developing more with buddypress.
I’m usually capable of working my way through a tutorial and learning something by the end. But this post is of a magnitude that I’m not sure I know enough to tackle all the steps. Is each of your posts, Burt, a step-by-step instruction on how to accomplish Ben’s request, or do you revise your answers along the way?
I’d like mostly what Ben is asking for. I want to use BuddyPress as a member directory. I don’t wish for anyone to make blogs through MU/BuddyPress other than my staff. I don’t want the “create a blog” option to appear anywhere. Not in the member profile, not in the tool bar. Essentially I want the option not to exist for users. Will the tutorial above show me how to do that?
Starting from instructions in post one, I’m finding that changing the admin setting from “only user account can be created” to “only logged in users can create new blogs” results in a “you must login to create a blog,” which takes me to the wordpress sign-in page before I have even registered.
The “only user account” setting generated what I would like to have happen, a signup screen sans “gimme a blog.”
Please forgive my being an ignoramus and let me know if I should patiently work my way from top to bottom, or if there is another solution outlined in a different post.

WordPress MU and Buddypress have separate profile/user management tables that aren’t synchronized and in some ways clash. End users will see different profile editing screens, in wp-admin and buddypress front-end, with different data that have nothing to do with eachother. Users are identified by full name, username, nickname, blogname or whatever depending on where in the system you are and how it’s configured. It’s a confusing mess and my pet peeve.
But I’m not even sure if that’s relevant to your problem, so I removed the rant.
Well, looks like WannaNetwork guy grew so fast it put him out of business!
Since our launch of the new WordPress powered platform on WannaNetwork in Early February, WannaNetwork has been growing substantially larger and larger.
With this growth also comes a few negative aspects. Running WannaNetwork as a free service is quickly becoming harder and harder when there are monthly server and maintenance costs adding up.
The last 12hrs have been nothing but disappointment in regards to the themes listed on BuddyPress. I don’t know if they are spam, poor coding or both.
I created a new install with WPMU 2.8.2 and BP 1.0.3. Tried the Avenue K9 theme, the Facebuddy theme and the Solitude theme. All of them failed to work properly or display accurately. In most cases, they throw an error when select various menu items; I tired of trying to figure out why, figuring that if a simple side-by-side test against the default theme wasn’t done by the developer, it’s likely I’ll find even more things wrong.
I’m willing to pay for decent themes, but I expected the same level of quality contributions that WordPress is afforded.
Has anyone found any themes that work 100% out-of-the-box?
I need a more professional member registration as well. I’ll use this excellent plugin which allows login with email address, but there are a lot of other annoying issues I still have to solve:
Restructuring registration process to an industry standard
How to use full name, first name + last name
Make 2+ part name in full name required + xprofile_sync_wp_profile()
Autogenerate or remove username
Generate username (+ blog url) from fullname
Use full name in confirmation emails
ListMessenger (or PHPlist) integration – plugin?
I’m not sure how much GigaOM actually changed. Their form looks a lot like the regular Buddypress (?) registration, minus that annoying username. Not sure how they did that.

Most of it is just a radically customized theme. I suspect they probably also use one of the commercial member subscription plugins.
I’m working on my new site here. The old site has a registration system based on PunBB. I’m not a PHP programmer, so please keep us posted on any progress you make.
Since this is more of a WPMU issue than a Buddypress one, like I mentioned in the other thread you made, you might want to consult the nice folks over at mu.wordpress.org/forums/.
Login with the same username and password and make a post there.
Re #3 – Your blogs will stay intact. Buddypress will create a few components called groups and forums (if you have bbPress installed). Groups can be configured by users or admins. BP forums are a part of groups.
Re #5 – There’s a few forum threads about integration and a couple of guides floating around the net.
The next version of Buddypress is scheduled to be released next week (August 11), but I won’t be surprised if they push it back a few weeks since there’s a lot of new stuff being implemented.
Right now, if you want a tight integration, you’ll have to theme WPMU and BuddyPress at the very least. There’s no way around it.

Keep in mind that these plugins would give a group a blog, but not a forum for each blog like you want… both have a different way of achieving this method.
The groupblog plugin would be more tightly integrated, whereas the “Community Blogs” plugin provisions group members to an existing WPMU blog.

3) If you already have users blogging on WPMU, BuddyPress will detect these user’s blogs (I’m quite sure BP detects them!). BP groups and forums build off of WPMU’s userbase; groups being a BP thing and forums being a BP/bbPress thing. So when you install BP, your users will have to configure their groups and forums from scratch.
Could you clarify this a bit more?
5) BuddyPress does indeed utilize bbPress for forum functionality. The next buddypress when does it get released?
Is there some documanation on bbpress + wpmu + buddypresS? I once did a regular wordpress and bbpress integration but could not find a simple way to integrate the bbpress forums in a wordpress page or match there layouts

It has very nice user registration without any of the wp-login.php and wp-signup.php files.
How would one create such registration? Is there a plugin or do I have to custom code ( IM php dev, so that would be no problem) The only thing I could think of is copy the wp-login.php and signup.php and rename them, then recode them to use different templates and the way I would like, like the way on pro.gigaom.com
Hi Everyone. Im considering BuddyPress with WPMU to build a sort of community but then in a little different setup than normal, therefore I have some questions I could not find answered yet:
1) Say mysite.com runs on WPMU and i have several (WPMU generated blogs) Could I register from any of those blogs and get a “global” account. With, I would be aple to comment on any blogposts from ANY blog that runs from my WPMU installation?
2) Say mysite.com runs some introduction to what my site does and i do not want the /members directory to popup there would that be possible?
3) How and where do these “groups” “Forums” and “Blogs” are generated? I have several blogs created true the WPMU interface, does buddypress link to them automatically?
4) I dont want any users to create blogs, they can only upload avatar and post comments on any of the wpmu sites. Is that possible? Since the admin creates all the blogs, the users can only communicate on the site.
5) Last but not least, Im looking for some forum functionality… I was hoping buddypress would have the forum like this one ( Which is bbpress i assume?) I would like to have a blog with categories like this one, the buddypress only seems to be able to post a topic without any categories, is that correct? I need a forum like this one for EACH blog I have, they should be seperated but they should all share the same user login so it would be possible for a visitor to post on any forum that runs true my wpmu installation
6) Well, really finally: Would it be possible to have a list of all blogs generated and place them on a wordpress page?

Ok so i have installed:
Mu wordpress (latest release: 2.8.2
Buddypress 1.0.3
I have followed the install to the letter on both MU wordpress and Buddypress but i have the following problem. I get error 404’s on all pages from the home page. The home page displays but no links work at all.
Interestingly only one theme will actually work with this installation as well, the others show white screens of death. (other themes that come bundled with buddypress).
So i am left with http://www.pricethat.co.uk and nothing more, i am sure it is some kind of mod_rewrite issue or something to do with the .htaccess but i cant imagine what, having checked that mod_rewrite is working fine etc.
Could anyone help me, i am at my wits end and have been sat here all day trying to work out what it is. I see a few people have had this very same problem with error 404’s but no one has actually documented any kind of solution to it.

I have a wordpress-mu theme operating on a customized theme. I am new to buddypress. I have it all installed and now I want to make one of my wordpress-mu subpages the main page for the buddypress home. I thought about renaming the subpage to “members” but that isn’t exactly the home for the social networking. How do I get my buddypress theme index.php to show up on my mydomain.com/subpage URL?
I am getting the emails appropriately, but when I click on the link to approve/accept the group add, it gives me a website with “WordPress Failure Notice” at the browser title, and it asks “Are you sure you want to do this?” But it has no option for me to select yes, or check anything to actually approve. So this is still in the queue.
Similarly, I cannot reject the request – and if I click on the link in the email that says to view the request, it takes me to the user’s profile – but the request is not listed. In fact, in his of groups, it lists (1) as the number of groups (assuming because he requested), but then underneath it says he “hasn’t joined any groups yet.”
Okay! I got this after a lot of bug searching. I didn’t have the right adress between the css-file and images.
