    If we add a script of code to allow our WordPress site to allow the same email address for multiple user accounts, would Buddypress still work? (Working on a social site where a user may want to have multiple profiles, but have communication from each sent to their same email address.)

    I’m not an expert on GDPR, but what are other large sites like Twitter doing about this? Twitter’s user handle is approximately the same as BP’s username.

    If you want BuddyPress to use something else for the profile URL, you can set the username in the user_nicename DB field and BuddyPress will use that for the user profile URL.

    Keep in mind that this might break whatever custom configurations you might have on your install.

    If you’d rather not mess with altering the data in the user DB columns, you can also potentially filter 'bp_core_get_user_domain' and 'bp_core_set_uri_globals_member_slug'.

    View this ticket for more info:
    https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6694

    If you wanted to use a plugin to change the profile URL to use the user ID, you can try using a plugin like this (untested):

    LH Number User Nicename

    Reminder: Always test in a development environment before deploying major changes on a live site.

    “The user_nicename info also isn’t exposed in the WordPress admin dashboard, which is why you might be confused”

    Bingo! That fact, hitherto unknown to me, is the source of my confusion.

    I will try some “edit nickname” plugins on a test site, and report back.

    If this doesn’t work, am I correct in thinking I can change nicknames using phpMyAdmin?

    Good morning! I’m running a job site for a specific industry. The industry includes specific jobs in several categories. On my site, I’ve got a custom post type with a post for each job title and these are sorted into a custom taxonomy of job type categories.

    Users have two drop-down xprofile fields where they can declare the two job titles in which they usually work. These drop-downs are populated with the titles of the job title custom post type. So, each user can select two job titles under which they can be listed.

    I have a page which lists the job titles, sorted by their categories. Each title is linked to a BuddyPress search for users who have listed that job title on their profile. You can see the gist of that here:

    /*** List Uers by Job Title ***/
    add_shortcode ( "list-users-by-job-links", "list_users_by_job_links_shortcode" );
    function list_users_by_job_links_shortcode() {
            echo '<div class="newspaper-3 users-by-job-list">';
            $custom_terms = get_terms('job_category');
            foreach($custom_terms as $custom_term) {
                    wp_reset_query();
                    $args = array(
                            'post_type' => 'job-title',
                            'tax_query' => array(
                                    array(
                                            'taxonomy' => 'job_category',
                                            'field' => 'slug',
                                            'terms' => $custom_term->slug,
                                    ),
                            ),
                    );
                    $query = new WP_Query($args);
                    if($query->have_posts()) {
                            echo '<h2>'.$custom_term->name.'</h2>';
                            while($query->have_posts()) : $query->the_post();
                                    echo '<h3><a href="https://obfuscated.com/members/?members_search=' . get_the_ID() . '">' . get_the_title() . '</a></h3>';
                            endwhile;
                    }
            }
            echo '</div>';
            wp_reset_postdata();
    }

    The page where I’ve used this shortcode is highly utilized and I’ve been requested to create one that will list the uers who have any job title within a certain category.

    But, I can’t find a way to do an ‘OR’ search in the members search. Is there a way to do something like this to search for users with any of the searched ids on their member profiles?
    https://obfuscated.com/members/?members_search=3147+or+3187+or+3189+or+3192

    I’m newish to PHP and WordPress, so I’m having some trouble figuring this out, but there’s another method of which I’m thinking. Loop though each custom post within a category, return a list of user_ids where each job title from that category appears, and concatenate them into a big list. Then, do a BP user query that filters by that list of user_ids.

    Would either of these be a feasible method of acheiving my goal? Any hints on where to start if the second method is the only viable method?

    Let me know if any more information would be helpful! Thanks very much for any tips or hints you can provide!

    The strings “admin” and “firstname-lastname” are no present in the respective user profiles. Those phrases ONLY exist as the @-mention name that appears in the profile page across from the picture.

    You kind of answered your own question.

    The at-mention name uses the user_nicename field from the wp_users database table. This can differ from the display name. The user_nicename info also isn’t exposed in the WordPress admin dashboard, which is why you might be confused.

    If a user registered manually on your site, this would be the Username that they enter on the registration page. If you imported a bunch of users from another system, check your database with a web app like phpMyAdmin or Adminer. You can also use a command-line tool like wp-cli to view the user fields:

    wp user list

    You can also try using a plugin like Edit Author Slug if you want the ability to edit the user_nicename field, but use with caution (untested):

    Edit Author Slug

    Test in a local environment before deploying on your live site.

    I’ve been using Theme My Login to avoid my users having to register an account with WordPress to use my site…now they have updated to a new version and from what I am understanding this update is causing big problems and causing site crashes and such. It’s also costing money. I haven’t updated yet, but I want to get away from this plugin before something bad happens.

    What can I do to make my site to where users are not directed to a WordPress login page when they sign in? This was a major issue when I first started my site.

    By the way, I need a very dumbed down answer as I’m very technologically illiterate. Thank you so much to anyone who can help!

    If you’ve already tried the solutions in this thread:

    BuddyPress 3.1.0 is now available!

    Then, here are a couple of other possible solutions:

    1) Remove the “Reply-To” email address from BuddyPress emails.

    By default, BuddyPress adds a “Reply-To” email header to each BuddyPress email containing the admin user’s email address.

    I’m guessing email senders might have problems with this because the “From” email address and the “Reply-To” email address could use different domains. Email senders might think this is spammy and would reject the email. Just a guess. You’d have to look in your email logs to confirm.

    Anyway, here’s a code snippet you can try in your theme’s functions.php or in wp-content/bp-custom.php:

    add_filter( 'bp_email_set_reply_to', function( $retval, $email_address ) {
    	// Wipe out Reply-to email header if it matches the admin email address.
    	if ( bp_get_option( 'admin_email' ) === $email_address ) {
    		$retval = new BP_Email_Recipient( '' );
    	}

    	return $retval;
    }, 10, 2 );

    2) Try setting a different “From” email address

    If you are having problems sending any email on your WordPress install, you might have to set the “From” email address to one that contains your website domain.

    There are a few plugins that can do this. Here are a couple:

    Change From Email

    WP Change Default From Email

    3) Try using a WordPress email SMTP plugin

    If all the above fail, try a SMTP email plugin:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/smtp/

    Please let me know if either of the solutions work.

    Your syntax is wrong, add quotes around the first 2 parameters.

    Hi, I am experiencing several strange bugs on my website related to BuddyPress.

    1. Avatars aren’t displayed in Firefox, though visible in Chrome browser.
    The only place the avatar is visible is in the admin bar area, but not in BuddyPress widgets nor member sites.

    The console tells me Firefox can’t establish a connection with
    wss://public-api.wordpress.com/pinghub/wpcom/me/newest-note-data

    Maybe this is related to the problem.

    2. The Add Friend button is not working. It is visible, hover works and you can click on it, but then nothing happens.

    Slava, the code that you posted above is the most elegant solution that I’ve seen for enhancing readability. I’m using it through the WordPress “Additional CSS” functionality. It works perfectly on the “Account Details” side on my registration page. However, I’d really love to do the same thing for the “Profile Details” side. I searched for several hours with no luck. Any suggestions would be very greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    im wondering what´s currently the best practise SEO setup/solution for BP3.x
    if my information is correct, for example, Yoast SEO still does not cover BP related pages and features like the activity stream, profile pages and groups, correct?

    in the past i used some mods based on

    Making WordPress SEO plugin compatible with BuddyPress Part 2

    but i am not sure if this is still state of the art.

    i really like Yoast SEO and use it for my members blogs as default but whats the best solution for BP, are there any new mods or plugins available?

    tnx, Eric

    For a temporary workaround this worked for me:

    buddypress\bp-templates\bp-nouveau\buddypress\groups\single\cover-image-header.php

    line 62
    <?php echo esc_html( bp_nouveau_group_meta()->description ); ?>

    replace with:
    <?php echo bp_nouveau_group_meta()->description; ?>

    Have you looked at Auto Group Join? also Registration Groups? These could help you do what you achieve. Auto Group Join includes a handy admin page where you can arrange who is in what group.

    Hiding the Group Activity (Home) page is a bit more involved, but one option could be to simply disable activity?

    Ah, That’s an error I’ve been unable to fix, the test system I tried it out on I ended up completely reinstalling. I looked all over for what might be wrong but no joy, I think that it’s down to permalinks for the register page becoming corrupt.

    I reported it on Trac here: https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/7744

    Maybe you can add to the ticket?

    I did deactivate all the plugins aside from BP and it had messed something up. After reactivating everything, I think I had to save my permalinks again. It’s been a couple of months, but something messed up that I had to fix after reactivating everything.

    Here’s how the mess began. I was getting a ton of spam users. A guy who runs a wordpress group told me to change the url from “register” to something else. I changed http://starwarscards.net/register to http://starwarscards.net/registerSWC and everything went downhill from there. So, I changed it back, saved my permalinks… still not working. I then deleted the register page, created a new one, saved my permalinks…and it was working about a month ago when I tested it, but I just got an email yesterday from someone who had the activation link error 🙁
