In reply to: [Resolved] Remove Activity tab from Groups
iheartwine
ParticipantThanks Shmoo. My community is based mainly on WP Events manager for groups, BBPress and Buddypress links. I don’t need activity at all (but just like I said, BP Links uses it for comments, so I had to turn it on). So basically I want to get rid of it in both places – in groups and profiles.
When I will remove activity-loop there is still the link in navigation tabs :/

ParticipantBut shouldn’t een Moderator have control over comments inside the group ?
Okay he can not edit the group description or delete the group as a moderator but I think a moderator should be able to bann people, en edit comments inside the group.
Thats what moderators do, keeping an eye on things.
Right now he can edit only when bbPress is active. He can only moderate on topics and replies not in BP-groups.
Maybe if thats’ what they want – delete this moderate option IF bbPress = not_active.
Because right now you can make somebody moderator but he’s still a regular Member when you don’t use bbPress inside Groups.November 25, 2013 at 10:18 am #174773In reply to: Buddypress profile

ParticipantHi all I am using WP 3.7.1, BP 1.8.1 and BBPress 2.4.1.
I am in the process of customising the MesoColumn theme and having a bit of trouble with the login function.
What I would like to create is a login form in the header of my site, that once a user has logged in will load the Activity, Profile, Messages, Friends, Members and Settings options, but I am unable to find anything in the forums to help me do this, can anyone please point me in the direction of the code to do this or help in any way, as this is a key function of the theme I am developing.

ParticipantTrue, but I was thinking of using the FitText.js plugin to prevent usernames from going to a second line when they become longer at this index page.
While working with min-heights on each element I try to control each member ‘widget’ having the same overall height.I would like to use BuddyPress as an upgrade (redesign) of an exciting bbPress site that has been broken from upgrading from bbPress 1.0 -> 2.0.
This site offers news articles, video + audio Post Formats and support trough bbPress but has grown into some very active ‘online-public-bar’ where people like to post a lot of Off Topic stuff mainly on the forum-side of the of the website while the homepage (news) is often overlooked.Using the Groups section for all Off Topic forum discussions and use the bbPress forums module only for real On Topic support would make this website more social and getting more people involved though the Activity-stream.
Plus I could make a custom audio-postformat (Podcasts) query on the BP Groups page to list all latest Podcasts.Redesign of the Groups section. Replacing the Avatar for an icon that will be the same through the entire site and people will recognize it as Off Topic stuff.
Maybe the font-size, spacing and coloring is still a bit off but I’ll look at this at the end, right now it using the Global styles.

ParticipantNope, that didn’t fix it.
BuddyPress and bbPress are not network activated.
If I delete a group from one site, it is deleted from all other sites at the same time π
Any suggestions?
P.S. I’m new to BuddyPress

Participant@chouf1
Oh sorry about that! I’m using:
Wordpress 3.7.1
Buddypress 1.8.1
bbPress 2.4.1After having deactivated everything and tried things 1 by 1 and because i’m running a subscription based shin-dig, like i suspect a few others here are doing, running the show from the back end seems like the best course of action (althought the back end version works if i’m using another account with similar access).
The former is another work around if one wants to use less plugins.

ParticipantI haven’t been around enough in the past number of months to know exactly where BuddyPress stands now, however in the past there were a couple of areas that really effected my ability to use BP.
1. Privacy – There were way to many holes in the privacy settings for users. Meaning that users were not able to define EXACTLY what was shown and to whom it was shown. Any public facing field ever entered by a user should have the ability to define who sees what is being posted.
2. Speed – There were way to many ‘joins’ throughout the code and on a somewhat ‘large’ site it basically made using BP impossible for us. We had tied together using bbPress with BP via the group forums, and even with only a few million replies a fully dedicated server would consistently be brought to its knees. There have been tons of tickets with numerous ideas on patches and fixes for this, but overall I would say that anything which can be done to help optimize some of the more intensive queries would help a lot.

Your tip worked a treat though, thanx alot! I would never been able to solve that without your helpful tip π
The only thing missing now is the sidebar on bbPress generated pages… you wouldn’t by any chance know how to fix that too?

Participant@boonebgorges thanks for that very illuminating and honest message π
I totally agree with you and do understand that BP and bbPress are not comparable to WP in their development resources. That we only have a small handful of volunteer coders who advance the project and a similar group of non-coders who help out as and when they can.
It is exactly *because* the resources we have are very limited and precious that we need to organize and prioritize more formally. Because this is the only way to maximize what we can achieve out of those precious but valuable time and resources available.
Of course, this would be something that the buddypress contributors as a group would need to agree on in unity. I do not wish to nor am I suggesting to ‘impose’ this on anyone. This is merely a suggestion for a better way forward.
This may be the only way to bridge any potential gap between what ‘needs to be done’ and what ‘inspires or excites’ the contributors. We somehow need to connect those two things. Ignoring one or the other is not good for the project in the long term.
The idea of a community generated and ranked list was a way to bridge this. And to foment more cohesion between the wider community and the small group of BP contributors. That’s just one idea, no doubt there are many more and better ones at that.
I would love to hear thoughts on this.

November 20, 2013 at 4:36 am #174518Asynaptic
Participant@modemlooper Thanks, I did know about hiring a coder to build a plugin. But you’ll note that’s not what I asked.
The article lays it on a bit too thick but it does have a point. For example, the ticket on custom post types has languished without any attention after a great initial discussion. And it has been punted several times already.
This is arguably an important feature. And it is 2+ years old. With the last activity being 6 months ago with trishasalas commenting and not receiving any feedback or response (except the punt).
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3460
I don’t want to get bogged down in this specific feature or ticket, I’m only using it to illustrate that, well, things can be improved on.
Do you really think that there is no room for improvement? That the status-quo is honky-dory a-okay? Because you don’t have to be negative or have a jaundiced eye to realize that things can always be improved. And it is obvious that the development process for both bbPress and BuddyPress can be improved when important tickets are ignored, marginalized and peripheral improvements come in way over their delivery date.
I would like to start a constructive dialogue on how we can improve things. If no one here is interested and thinks that there is no need or room for such improvement, then I’ll be happy to go back to lurking.

Participant* Better customisation options of the activity stream: ie to be able to define a set of “or” filters for content type, and who. So (with plugin support) I can define a feed to include things from “me or friends or followers” showing “topics and topic replies and posts and new users” (and ideally be able to have a permalink to this with no other fluff on display). The current activity feed selectors are a mess and don’t provide what most people want to see.
* A way to select which filters and views are available in activity/, and persistently set the default activity feed view (from the admin panel)
* live activity updates
* A reply by PM hook into bbpress
* Better options for users to self delete
* Improved management/rethink of the tabs on profile pages (because this rapidly piles up as you add in plugins) : “Activity Profile Messages Friends Following Followers Location Groups Blog Forums Events Gallery Settings Links” Is not viable for a one line menu bar – this is maybe a display issue, but…!
* be able to pass a function to the members loop, thats called to determine the display order (e.g. so I can easily order by City or age or any xprofile field)
Maybe these are already there, but these are the things that are bugging me as a non-expert dev right now…

WPWally
ParticipantSorry, forgot to add the details:
1. Which version of WordPress are you running? 3.7.1 2. Did you install WordPress as a directory or subdomain install? Directory 3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? Root on server / subdirectory on localhost (I have two copies for emergencies like this but this time both are behaving badly) 4. Did you upgrade from a previous version of WordPress? If so, from which version? Yes, 3.6.1 5. Was WordPress functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes 6. Which version of BP are you running? 1.8.1 7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? 1.8 8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? If so, which ones? Yes: AddThis Social Bookmarking Widget / BuddyPress Template Pack / Edit Author Slug / Login With Ajax / Popular Widget / Video Thumbnails (disabled all plugins save for BuddyPress and the behavior continues) 9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Customized 10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No 11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? Yes (2 lines - excluding php open and close tags): <?php add_filter( 'bp_use_wp_admin_bar', '__return_false' ); define ( 'BP_DISABLE_ADMIN_BAR', true ); ?> 12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? Not running bbPress 13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server's log files. None 14. Which company provides your hosting? nearlyfreespeech.net 15. Is your server running Windows, or if Linux; Apache, nginx or something else? Linux: Apache (both localhost and server)I have also just removed the avatars folder and it does indeed create one as well as the userid folder although that remains blank (no files are placed there) and the same error as my original post appears. Hope that helps in solving this.

ParticipantHi mercime. Thanks for your reply. I was under the impression that bbPress (I don’t actually know what that is) is integrated into the new BuddyPress, so I should have it if BP is installed.
I’ve settled in at the codex you directed me to, trying to work my way from the very start. In the Before You Install section, it mentions ‘pretty permalinks’. But again, I don’t know what that is. In the Settings>Permalinks page in my Dashboard, there’s no reference to it. Searching for it as a plug-in doesn’t seem to find anything.

ParticipantIβm looking at a video on You Tube and my BuddyPress Setting page looks different. …. I donβt have a Forums tab in my BP Settings window.
@mark-gordon That’s an old video. Forums are now installed via the bbPress plugin https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/Have I got a faulty installation? What am I missing? All help welcomed!
@sencerim Since BP 1.7, BP is compatible with most WP themes i.e., if you go to your site’s Members page for example, you’ll see the BP member directory component on that page. If you’re not seeing the Member’s directory using the slug/page name you used for it, try changing to the BP Default theme in Apperance > Themes and navigate to the members directory page or the component pages you have activated.November 5, 2013 at 11:42 am #173831In reply to: bbPress to Activity import

KeymasterIt sounds like you’ve run the importer that comes with bbPress 2. If BuddyPress and Activity were set up and working prior to you running that data import/migration, I would expect the Activity stream to be populated. If this isn’t the case, perhaps it is a bug. Might be worth a quick look on bbpress.org’s forums to see if the question has been asked before.
I’m not aware of any scripts or plugins that backfill the data for you.
