also, what if you can benefit from this plugin:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gd-star-rating/

    but make it work for MU and for buddypress sso that the rating will add point to the users’ tokens or karma…. and so on..

    mmmm….wiki on buddypress, this would be amazing!

    add to that a karma plugin for users who work more on the wiki and it will be just great!

    if you are using your own theme, you are out of luck!

    There are many, many many. post on this topic.

    When you use your own theme, you will need to copy the register.php to your theme directory.

    If you do so.. you we always get.. the login page.

    If you are not copy the register.php to your theme directory, it will default to wp-signup.php.

    it works fine, however, because it does not use buddypress-language file your site will have mix of English and your mother tounge language.

    The best work around I come up with is… do not copy the register.php.

    Translate the WPMU language into your language.

    I believe, this is logged for bug fix.

    This plugin works with wpmu 2.7 in following steps.

    1. user manually registers.

    2. activate account

    3. go to profile, add openid

    4. users can now login with their openid account(s)

    OpenID login form is displayed on wp-login.php, but not on buddypress themed wp-signup, as it’s customized for buddypress.

    This thread is not updated since 2 months ago, anyone else with tips or updates?

    my wpmu/buddypress is on the root, but my registration page returns 404 as well. However if I manually type wp-signup.php, then it shows the page just fine.

    How about something for the site admin. A few ideas. A blog clone plugin. Setup one or more clone blogs including plugin settings, then depending on the role, group or whatever of the new user it would clone the blog with all the setting, menu, etc. already setup. This would of course go great with a true role-manager for wpmu that could create site-wide roles, or edit the site-wide rights of any of the roles. Which used with a wpmu specific adminimize plugin that would recognize not just the old roles, but newly created ones too and then set the menus site-wide for each of the roles (or if we can clone blogs, at least would recognize newly created roles). This would be great for educational or setups that want to charge for extras (although I guess these are kind of wpmu ideas, but still very relevant to buddypress too.

    Another tack would be to create some educational plugins for quizzes somewhat like Moodle without Moodles rigid structure. (But those are more WordPress specific rather than buddypress) although buddypress with individual eduacational spaces for each student, but sitewide feeds of grades to teachers would be great. And schools need the free stuff with money hard to come by from administration types who think computers are just big calculators for adding up costs.

    And yes, I definitely agree about the privacy issue.

    Lots of great ideas above all the best in making your choice and best of luck at GSoC.

    Hi there

    Im pretty new to buddypress, but have worked with WP (and WPMU) quite some time.

    I have just set up a clean buddypress installation on kennethsblog.dk and is testing it out untill the right domain becomes available early in april.

    I would like to limit my users to having one blog only, and not the oppitunity to create more. Is there a way to do that? Or should I just comment out the option in adminbar.php?

    You need to create that file yourself. bp-custom.php is a file that BuddyPress looks for, kind of as a helper file to allow anyone to modify BP without needing to hack the core files.

    The function that Andy wrote for you will give you the information you need to create a plugin or widget for yourself. He’s teaching you to fish, basically… :)

    Hi everyone, wanted to see what people’s thoughts/opinions are on how they plan on using the main blog that comes in the default BuddyPress install, mysite.com/blog. Do you use it/plan on using it to update the community on your site’s goings on (new features, etc.) or do you view it as a real blog in its own right.

    I ask because I plan on blogging a lot through my own site/community, mostly covering news items. But I’m wondering if I should blog through a separate blog, citizenjake.mysite.com say, or through the main blog. I guess my thinking is that if I use the main blog as my main personal blog that might hinder the overall community. Thoughts?

    No side effects that I know of, though our setup is still \”young\” (only been live for just over a month) so I don\’t know the long-term implications yet.

    One thing I will mention, though — if you site has been live for a while you\’ll have to do some SQL cleanup in the database to rename things that have been cached (like user activity). For example:

    UPDATE wp_bp_activity_sitewide SET content = replace(content,\' wire:\',\' wall:\');

    What do you have to do different now that you didn\’t before you had the faux translation?

    Actually, the biggest difference is a positive one: instead of hand-changing all the instances of \”Wire\” in the plugin and theme files we keep that in the language file instead. Since the language file (and the bp-custom file) aren\’t in the BuddyPress SVN repo they will never get overwritten when we upgrade.

    Thanks a few questions if you dont mind… my replies below your pont

    ********

    1. First I opened the POT file, copied it to a .po version, and then made the changes I wanted in a text editor (most with search and replace, but also had to do some new lines by hand).

    *******

    Yes i have started doing this with poedit and i have now looked at doing this with text editor.. so once i have changed all groups to spots etc ill be ready with the .po and .mo file….

    **********

    2. I uploaded the .po file to my web server, and ran this from a command line:

    *********

    where do i upload the .po file to??

    msgfmt -o buddypress-spots.mo buddypress-spots.po

    **********

    What directory to i run this command in.. in the bas root one of the site or in /wp-content/

    or /wp-content/mu-plugins/

    ???

    what does this command do exactely

    ******

    4. Then I went into wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-languages and added the spots.mo file there.

    ********

    did you mean.. “and added the buddypress-spots.mo file there…”

    ___________________

    I too think that this is better long term as if each time i update it will nock out my changed files…

    QUESTION the things i have defined…

    define( ‘BP_GROUPS_SLUG’, ‘spots’ );

    define( ‘BP_MEMBERS_SLUG’, ‘spotters’ );

    i have already set up in wp-config.php will this clash with what you have said to doo..

    Hi Jane_135,

    You can add the messages, activity, and wire areas as Widgets to any page you want. Look at the file called “home.php” in your home theme to see an example of how BuddyPress does this by default on the home page.

    If you don’t have a home theme, read up on the installation process at https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-individual-components/ — look for the “Installing the default home theme” and follow the directions there.

    Also, the explanation of how the themes work (and how the Widgets within the home page file work) see https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/using-the-buddypress-themes/.

    Produlz,

    It sounds like a WordPress MU installation issue (not a BuddyPress issue).

    If you suspect a problem please report it to the support forums but you must include the information asked for in the WPMU bug reporting guidelines!

    There’s lots of threads on this very topic at https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/tags.php?tag=installation.

    To create a custom translation file just for the purpose of label changes, see my instructions in https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1877#post-9927.

    To be honest, that’s all I did with my translation was change “Wire” to “Wall” for the BuddyPress setup at Tucson Digital Arts Community.

    Michael,

    Getting a custom slug into the page title involves adding something like this into the theme header template:

    <?php wp_title('»', true, 'right'); ?>

    You can see my notes / comments in https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/126 for a better example — that was in the home theme, though.

    @Trcwest

    Here is how I did a custom translation to replace slugs and labels. I’m replacing my language name with spots so you can see how it would work for you.

    1. First I opened the POT file, copied it to a .po version, and then made the changes I wanted in a text editor (most with search and replace, but also had to do some new lines by hand).

    2. I uploaded the .po file to my web server, and ran this from a command line:

    msgfmt -o buddypress-spots.mo buddypress-spots.po

    3. In my bp-custom file (wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-custom.php) I added a language definition:

    define( 'BPLANG', 'spots' );

    if ( file_exists( ABSPATH . MUPLUGINDIR . '/bp-languages/buddypress-' . BPLANG . '.mo' ) ) {

    load_textdomain( 'buddypress', ABSPATH . MUPLUGINDIR . '/bp-languages/buddypress-' . BPLANG . '.mo' );

    }

    4. Then I went into wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-languages and added the spots.mo file there.

    This solution is better (in my opinion) than using the define (‘WPLANG’, ”); in your wp-config.php file, and won’t break when you upgrade BuddyPress.

    this post will probably be locked by a moderator(sorry), but I simply have to ask:

    I would like to pay you to customize a script for me… it’s the “Bulk Import Users”

    http://manojkumar.org/bulk-import-members-users-plugin-for-buddypress-site

    instead of just:

    username|firstname lastname|email@email.com

    i want to add additional fields/xprofile fields that can be imported

    like this:

    username|firstname lastname|extra_field|email@email.com

    the Extra_field would be an xprofile field

    I have also changed the “Full Name” to “First Name” and added an additional field for “Last Name”

    so the new import line would look like this:

    username|field_1|field_2|field_3|email@email.com

    I’ve got $25-$100 for you if you can do this asap

    I posted this to original plugin creators website(he deserves the first crack at it)

    but i really need this done…deadlines suck…

    please email me

    OK, I’m no programmer, but I’m an idea guy.

    If some programmers are feeling bored, or just needing some inspiration, here’s some ideas, pulled from various places around the web which could really allow the BuddyPress platform to take over the web. It goes without saying (but can never be said too much… thanks to all the programmers who’ve worked so hard on everything we have so far!) These are in no specific order.

    1. BOOMj.com has a fantastic interface for their members section. Basically, you answer some questions, and it will import the data into a specialized template. It’s probably no different than creating a member theme for BuddyPress, but I love the interface. I’ve been playing around with the member theme a bit, and after I get some things figured out, I’ll upload some ideas into this site myself, but until then, if someone gets some inspiration from that site and can create something similar… please do!

    2. BOOMj.com Rewards Center. WordPress already has a plugin called CubePoints which would be a great starting point for a system to gain points. BOOMj offers points for uploading a picture, etc whereas the CubePoints system only allows for points for leaving comments and things like that. As far as redemption options for points, we’d probably need some discussion as a community over what things we can offer if people get tons of points. I’d love to see this point concept expanded into something end user configurable, as different people have different needs and goals with their sites, but some starting points include:

    * 1 point for viewing a post

    * 5 points for leaving a comment

    * 100 points for uploading a picture

    * 100 points for filling out (perhaps) each section of a profile

    * 50 points for joining a group

    * 500 points for referring a friend who actually signs up

    * 25 points each day a “game” is played (see idea 3 below)

    * or other things.

    The entire point of this plugin would be to encourage our users to get in and interact with the site.

    3. Games. As anyone who’s played a Facebook game knows, They are incredibly addictive. http://apps.facebook.com/zoobuilder/ is one example that keeps me glued to my computer screen at least a half hour per day. It’s a brilliant concept in that the only real way to “succeed” with the game is to interact with other people on the site. I throw out that Facebook game as one idea, but I’m sure there could be others.

    4. Suggested Friends plugin. All the big social networking sites seem to operate around a geographical area (a city or town), a school (college or high school), or other common interests. Perhaps a plugin could be developed which would incorporate all this data, and help members find other members with similar backgrounds and interests, and the plugin would automatically “suggest” them to members.

    There may be a little trickiness in the worldwide end of setting up a database which has all the schools in each city (if we wanted to get that tricky) but ClassMates.com seems to have the same dataset that BOOMj and Facebook have, so it’s out there somewhere. If that database could somehow be pulled into this plugin, and when the plugin was activated, it would automatically add the “what school did you attend?” question to the profile signup page, it would be awesome.

    5. Pokes and Flirts, and other such things. I still don’t know what to do on Facebook when someone pokes me, but enough people do that it’s a very popular feature. Once again, it leads to end user interaction. If there were some level of flirting (not exactly sure what to call it, but you could flirt or FLIRT with someone (the later would express more interest than the former) that would be an even better feature.

    6. On the subject of Facebook, tagging has become really big. Someway to incorporate something similar would be great.

    7. Dodo integration. There’s a wordpress plugin called Dodo, which hasn’t been updated for a year, but it’s a wonderful start to an idea. Basically, it tracks what a user is looking at, and suggests related content specifically for that user. My only real issue with the plugin is that you can’t seem to use it if you have a home.php file. If someone could wigitize it (as a start) those of us with content and BuddyPress on our sites would be able to use it to provide a more user friendly atmosphere.

    8. On that user specific end comes two ideas. On my BuddyPress installations, I offer users blogs, primarily because the standard profile doesn’t allow the users (in my opinion) enough options to express themselves. Using idea one above, perhaps we could offer user “themes” which would be quickly changed by the user. It’s sort of somewhere in between a blog and a profile. The site would store the users preference, and display that user theme whenever that user’s profile was viewed. (A simple start would be to develop one user theme, and offer various color options… Over time, there could be pretty pink themes with flowers, and big black themes with chains, or white picket fences,etc.)

    Secondary to that (or perhaps primary) Google (at http://www.google.com/ig) and Yahoo (at http://my.yahoo.com/) have ways for a user to customize what appears on their “dashboard”. Could something similar be integrated?

    9. Similar to Idea 7 above, we could offer the same options for groups.

    10. Live chat. This is a big one, and probably way outside the capabilities of what BuddyPress can handle at the moment, but a live chat feature would be great. I know there are plugins which as supposed to be able to handle this, and I honestly haven’t played around with too many of them.

    11. “Other Site” integration. There’s Facebook, BOOMj, MySpace, Gay.com, and a million other social networking sites. I can’t think of the others, and I’m not even really sure what I mean by this, but someway for users to easily switch from the big guys to a BuddyPress enabled site would be a HUGE thing. Each of those sites has their own idiosyncrasies, so that would be problematic, but someone will get what I’m trying to say and hopefully explain it in this forum.

    12. Last idea (for now) would be a sort of “BuddyPress Member Pool” Various sites using BuddyPress would be able to opt into some sort of main site which would know that Member 123 is a user of site ABC, but would really be interested in the content of site XYZ. Through some sort of shared protocol, his or her user data could be shared with site XYZ, and XYZ’s content would be shown within the interface of site ABC. Members and groups could operate in this same fashion, wish shared friends and group lists, etc.

    I know on my own sites, I have trouble getting people to sign up because it’s a very small community. (I only have 7 members on the biggest site… 10,000 visitors per day to the content section, but only 7 people have signed up to be members). Through this “sharing” system, it would appear as if I had a lot more members, and more people would sign up (would you have signed up for MySpace if there were only 6 other people there?) People in this system would not only have more active communities, they’d have shared content, and eventually get more visitors, as people from ABC would be traveling over to XYZ and back again.

    Well… that’s enough for people to think about today. I’ll be back with more ideas later. Please comment in this forum and let me know what you think, perhaps help figure out what the priorities should be, or expand on these ideas.

    Thanks in advance,

    Eric
