To debug, try disabling any custom code snippets or plugins that interfere with the activity stream.

Hi,

I’m trying to build a custom BP theme frontpage like wordpress.com. Does anyone know how I can get the image, title and link that I can use in entry.php in the activity folder?

The plan is to have the 12 latest posts on the frontpage but BP-theming is not made easy, in my opinion

I could do this by playing with the CSS but it would just make it more complicate

Hello,

The site that I manage (www.naidw.org) has a template that we like and was originally designed by a designer. We have since parted ways with our designer but are unhappy with the functionality of buddypress within our personalized theme. Is it possible (or feasible) to customize the buddypress staples like activity, groups, etc. We like the way that the default buddypress template looks. Again though, I don’t know if it’s possible to have these pages differ from our default theme. I would really appreciate anyone’s advice and expertise! Thank you!

LiIttle something i learned as a newb.
Activate your forum next thing you’ll want to do is then go to your settings you’ll see forums on the bottom

You’ll see archive slug and Single Slugs rename in the forum base and then in the forum slug below aswell. Because forum actually conflicts with the sitewide forum. let’s say name your sitewide forum bulletin board or support. The group forum natively is the forum on the header menu. Which you can later rename..

Now you want to make a topic go to topic in the forums. Click you’ll see “all forums” and “new forum”
I would click new forums, here you name a topic of interest. let’s say general discussion name your topic and below give a basic Description(optional).

Now you want to save it you’ll then see a link look at the link copy it. but only copy

http://www.example.com/support

Next thing you’ll need to do which is the final step. Go to the appearance section. You’ll see menu which is you site navigation menu. You’ll have a few things you have to do here.

First make sure you make a custom menu or which now the main theme allows you to or you can make a custom menu name.

look at the section on the top left corner a drop-down you click whichever theme is named or you select as your menu save .
Now go down to custom links remember that link you copied earlier(http://www.example.com/support) paste it in there and name it click add to menu.

Now you have a list you can now rearrange move or even create a drop-down menu on. What i did have activity /members /group and with forums i renamed that “group forum directory” moved that slightly to the right which creates a Drop-down, then the site wide forum which i named support or whatever you want to call it. Now save. DONE!!

Go to your site homepage and everything should be there. Best of luck!! :)

Buddypress 1.5 new patch is a nightmare. I cannot see my activity, members or groups. I feel so low. I think we might need to revert to the previous version. I cannot access even my dashboard. They changed the colour of the header to lighter blue after many people might have customised the rest of the pages to match. What they should have done is put in another section for lighter blue so that you have the choice to change it. It is very stressful after putting in a lot of work and hours. They really need to investigate Buddypress thoroughly before releasing the patch

I am creating a custom page and I would like to include a “wall” type feature (the page will have a similar format as a Facebook fan page). Rather than having users “comment” like in a post, I would love if could somehow have it setup to post the way activity posts, so that the stream for the page looks nicer. Could this be done by adding a custom filter? I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction as I am very new to WordPress/BuddyPress. Thanks in advance.

I am looking for two pieces of code (PHP) to use in my themes alongside the bp_follow plugin.

http://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-followers

I need the code for listing the activity of the users a user is following and the code to place a follow button anywhere in a template page.

If anyone can quote me, please contact me: mike [at] bigflannel.com.

Many thanks.

Hi guys,

I’m rather new to buddypress and am getting a little bit confused. My setup is quite unusual in that I don’t need several of the buddypress components such as ‘activity’ or ‘friends’.

Instead I need the template to display several custom built web applications that Ihave coded myself.

Therefore to make life easy I edited the php templates in my themes /members/single/ directory. the files activity.php and friends.php respectively, to show my web apps.

I then created a bp-custom.php file and redifined the SLUGS to match the names of my web apps. i.e.

define( ‘BP_FRIENDS_SLUG’, ‘photos’ );
define( ‘BP_ACTIVITY_SLUG’, ‘songs’ );
define( ‘BP_GROUPS_SLUG’, ‘songsearch’ );

This worked great, when I clicked on the photos link, I was taken to my web app for photos etc… when i click songs it loads the activity template which contains my songs web app etc… etc….

However, now I need to add in more of my custom coded apps but have run out of these subcomponents to ‘butcher’ so my question is…. How do I add a new one?

I have created the file songprofile.php in the /members/single/ folder.

what I want is when the URL is http://www.mysite.com/members/user/songprofile/ for this songprofile.php template to be rendered within the members component in exactly the same way as my modified activity/friends templates are.

But i genuinely haven’t got a clue as to how I go about adding templates to the members component.

Obviously I still want the members-header.php to be loaded etc… everything the same, but just this new custom template to be rendered if that makes sense

Can anyone help?

I am struggling with configuring buddypress in my custom theme. I’ve got a lot of it working, but for the life of me I can’t figure this one out.

I am running WP 3.2.1 and BP 1.2.9 and my servers are running apache/linux and php5.2.
I’ve got 28 plugins, including BP, BP Activity, BP Template Pack, BP Captcha (not activated) and WP Super Cache.

I’ve activated and deactivated the BP Activity and the BP Captcha to see if that had an effect and they don’t.

So the problem is that in my custom theme, there is a huge space between the Navbar and the Subnav.

This happened when I added the sidebar onto the left of the page – to be consistent with the rest of the site.

At first all of the content in the item-body was pushed down to the level of the bottom of the left-column sidebar. By adding a few float:left tags into the CSS, I managed to bring the item-header and the item-list-tabs-no-ajax to the top of the content area where they should be. But I can’t get the subnav to move up.

I’m on Firefox (site looks like crap in IE at the moment) and I’ve got the Web Developer Toolbar installed.

I can message you the link if you’d like to see it.

Hello I am trying to custom my theme for buddypress which I am really enjoying and wanting to see if I could get some help or guidance.
I would like to display the item nav and item header to be site wide for logged in users. I have got the code below from the members/single/home.php and it well work for when I am on the members pages but every where else like on /activity or /groups or /members it just doesn’t display any user information. What could i I do to display the current logged in users information?

@gregfielding – Hi! I’m running into similar problems. I defined a seperate loop (for announcements, more important than other updtaes) to be displayed on the top of the page. But when I add an update in the ‘normal’ loop, the same update is also added to the custom loop on top, even though it doesn’t match the filter set to that loop.

Did you manage to solve your problem? Is it a case of making sure all IDs and Classes are different, so AJAX call doesn’t reach the custom loop? Any help or pointers would be highly appreciated!

I’m creating a community site (no!) Instead of landing on the BP ‘home’ page, I want to land on a custom page, and have that page’s menu entry to be the first, or, to be before the BP menu. such that:

Home (new index.php) | Activity | Members | Groups | Forums | (Other Custom Pages)

Talking with some of my users recently they were asking about the way the forum directory works, and asked how come when they click a link to the forum item it doesn’t take them to the latest post. Instead the link goes to the very first post in the thread and they’ve got to page through to the latest post to read it.

Now I understand better how BP works and if they’re paying attention to their activity streams they should see a latest post link but this still depends on whether they’re friends with that person or have been participating in the activity..

I’m not deadset on this but thought I would bring it up. I know the forum component is a carryover from bbpress (if Im not mistaken) and don’t expect the BP team to own it. Just something I was thinking about as most forums users are accustomed to being able to see things like ‘unread replies’ and new posts.

I was considering some other alternative, but can accept if this is not possible I can inform our users and try to train them better.

Hey,

I tried the following code from your post above, but it still isn’t working. :-( The activity from the group I’m trying to hide is still showing up on the home page.

‘
function bp_my_activity_filter( $a, $activities ) {
global $bp;

if ( $bp->current_component != $bp->activity->slug )
return $activities;

foreach( $activities->activities as $key => $activity ) {
if ( $activity->type ==’activity_update’ && $activity->item_id == ‘131’ ) {
unset( $activities->activities[$key] );
$activities->total_activity_count = $activities->total_activity_count – 1;
$activities->activity_count = $activities->activity_count – 1;
}
}

$activities_new = array_values( $activities->activities );
$activities->activities = $activities_new;
return $activities;
}
add_action( ‘bp_has_activities’, ‘bp_my_activity_filter’, 10, 2 );
‘

I added the new file /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php. I got the group id by adding bp_group_id() into groups-loop.php which is 131 as dictated in the code above. I did a test and removed the first if statement, and it removed all of the activity on that group’s page successfully. Everything from that group was still visible on the home page though.

By the way, thank you soooo much for helping me with this. I am totally lost on this thing.

Ok, so tried to move some code from core to create a custom component and nothing worked. Never got a page to create and not sure how to link it to template files.

For example: in bp-activity it has a file bp-activity-template.php and in include array there’s an entry ‘template’. Is this pointing to that file? Do we need to include all these files listed in the array? If I had bp-example-template.php in my array id still use ‘template’?

To me it seemed much easier to create components before. I know I can still use old method but that won’t last forever.

Can somebody update the skeleton component to reflect the new method?

modemlooper

create a file bp-custom.php and add to /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php

add this code to file:

`<?php
define( ‘BP_DEFAULT_COMPONENT’, ‘profile’ );
?>`

To change other settings read this page: https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/changing-internal-configuration-settings/

Profile
Friends

Friends
etc

I also would like to know how you take one out

Thank you for your time and help. I greatly appreciate it. Let me know if you have a possible solution or anything else that might help :)

I know what the problem is, but not necessarily how to solve it.

These JS rich text editors work by hiding the HTML textarea, and hijacking the form submit process; when you submit the form, the CKeditor takes the content of its custom editor and puts it into the hidden textarea before the form is submitted for processing. The problem with the activity update form is that it’s submitted with ajax rather than with a regular HTML form submission (which requires a page load).

TinyMCE has a method called .triggerSave() that you can call manually on an event (such as (‘#whats-new-submit’).click()) that will do this content shuffling without a regular form submit. It’s possible that CKeditor has something similar.

Hello,
Recently I updated to all the latest versions of BP and WP. Everything seemed to be going swell, except then I realized that in our activity streams certain links are not working as they should, rather they are redirecting to the home page. Is there some way to force refresh all the permalinks in Buddypress perhaps?

My permalink structure is: site.com/%category%/%postname%

When I hover over the ‘view’ link my browser status bar shows the URL is formated by BP like: site.com/activity/p/1234

Normally when you click the ‘view’ link the site will redirect to the correct URL like: site.com/members/stig/activity/1234/

Oddly enough if I take a link that isn’t working and I manually form the URL like the end result should look even that goes to a home page for any of the links/activity posts that aren’t working…

Some of my links are doing this correctly and some of them just redirect to the home page. I’ve tried changing and saving my permalink structure countless times but the issue persists. The permalinks can be changed in the dashboard I verified that’s working because my URL structure changes, but it doesn’t resolve the issue I’m having with activity links..

I’ve read tutorials on modifying .htaccess with stuff like:

‘RedirectMatch 301 /([0-9]+)/([0-9]+)/([0-9]+)/(.*)$ http://www.site.com/$4’

However Im not that savy with .htaccess rules and I don’t think the above code is written correctly to handle activity links. Also if I’m manually forming the URLs and they don’t work I don’t expect this method would work either..

I’ve tried this with the default BP theme and it’s still broken. I’ve researched as many threads as I could on this site and WP.org and while I now better understand the use of permalinks I’m still stumped on this issue.

QUESTIONAIRE:
1. Which version of WordPress are you running? WP 3.2.1 (Multisite)
2. Did you install WordPress as a directory or subdomain install? installed in root
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? n/a
4. Did you upgrade from a previous version of WordPress? If so, from which version? 2.9.x
5. Was WordPress functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes
6. Which version of BP are you running? 1.2.9
7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? the version that came just before 1.2.9 (I’ve only been using BP about 2 months)
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? If so, which ones? Several plugins for BP including /blog removal from permalinks, BP Album, FB Autoconnect, etc. I’ve tried disabling them all and that didn’t make any difference.
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? ReviewIt theme from Ghostpool. However the issue persists in the BP default theme.
10. Have you modified the core files in any way? Only style sheet (css)
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? not that I’m aware of
12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? Used the Buddypress included files to activate a new instance of forums
13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. 404 errors to old permalinked pages and ‘deprecated with’ errors related to a classifieds plugin, I just turned php error reporting off.
14. Which company provides your hosting? We have our own colo in Dallas
15. Is your server running Windows, or if Linux; Apache, nginx or something else? WinServer 2k8 running Apache and php5

@r-a-y – hey man thanks for being a great help here to the community. I’ve been reading most of your posts in the forums over the past several hours fighting with my permalinks in activity streams.

I saw your .htaccess redirect post for mismatch 301 and tried it but I think I need it customized for activity streams?

In my example, certain activity posts are just going to the front page of my site rather than the post itself, they’re all coded like: http://www.site.com/activity/p/0001 when you click ‘view’ it just goes to the home page :(

Pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to get them to refresh or something. My permalink structure is /%post_id%/%postname%

It’s making me crazy lol
