So is this something you guys really feel is a good feature? I understand you can do a stand-alone bbpress install to change this, but there must be a reason the integrated, default method ties Groups and Forum categories together.
Isn’t it a bit odd that when you click the Forum button there is no “New Thread” button? Perhaps I’m just not realizing the potential here.
Sidenote: I think we could use another forum category here at buddypress.org for General Questions maybe. I couldn’t really find a fully appropriate category for this post IMO.
Is there anywhere else to go to for support questions?
Topic: BuddyPress and Multi-Sites
I’m building an mu site and I’m trying to determine if BuddyPress features can be retained using the model I’m proposing. Thanks very much for any comments on this…
Proposed Model
1. Exclusive Content Blogs
made up of a series of 10-12 blogs under the same branded banner.
i.e. news.nichesite.com;
sports.nichesite.com,
people.nichesite.com etc.
Each blog will be accessable to public but full content and commenting only accessable to users based on member level – i.e. free, paid can view all, but public restricted to viewing post excerpt only.
This access will be controlled by post access tags used within each post.
2. User Blogs
Give users the option to setup their own blog that they can use to promote their business inside the nichesite.com community and of course externally to a wider audience.
All Member levels of nichesite.com as well as the public can view these blogs.
Ideally, these blogs could have their own blog-specific users so that the blog owner can run their own marketing campaigns to the specific users of their blog.
The User Blogs section will have its own unique identity, (i.e. mynichesite.com) whilst still remaining part of the larger network and brand.
3. Social Network Layer (using BuddyPress)
Overlaying all of the the above is a nichesite.com social network.
This allows for all user activity across both areas (Exclusive and User Blogs) to be aggregated within the social network using BP.
If you’ve read this far… thanks for sticking with me

My most pressing questions are:
1. Can BuddyPress work across the entire network as above if the User Blogs area is setup using a multi-site plugin?
2. If the answer is NO to #1, then can BuddyPress still do its job across all users if the User Blogs are Domain Mapped on top of the root install?
thanks for any help in advance

Topic: Page not found, why?
sorry for so many questions!
everytime i think we are good to go someone finds a problem, lol
Someone help me troubleshoot – why is this page not found
http://successiqu.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http://successiqu.com/members/admin/friends/requests
but this one works
http://successiqu.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http://successiqu.com
if i login, and then go to my friend request page it works, but when it is trying to go to the login page and redirect i get a 404
Hi all. First please forgive the ingnorance soon to be displayed. And now:
I’m going to try to upgrade to the lastest WPMU and BP. I’m currently running pre 2.7.1 and BP 1.0.1.
So when I go to backup the current /community directory from which I’m running, I find it is quite large – nearly 140megs, with about 138,000 files in over 1000 folders. I was shocked at the size, frankly, and much of it seems to be cache files.
1) Do I need to back all of this up before the upgrade?
2) Will this contunue to grow if I keep caching turned on, or is the size of this self limiting, somehow?
3) Is this unusually large?
4) What will I lose dumping these files? Site speed? Actual user data?
5) I haven’t even looked at the db size – I assume the db should be backed up before any upgrades?
Thanks in advance. Perhaps there is nothing of note here, but I don’t want anything to go haywire, esp. with this much data.
Topic: Social Network Integration
This is a topic being discussed in various places here under various specific auspices, but I wanted to start a new topic to discuss my specific issue. Please forgive any redundancy.
I initially selected WPMU for the platform on my current long-term project for two main reasons: 1) My existing familiarity with WP Theme Development is far greater than with any other CMS, and 2) WPMU supports this thing called BuddyPress. I need a social networking component for this project. However, upon looking into things further and thinking about them more and more, the exact functionality I need to make BuddyPress sustainable does not seem to exist, though I feel like some development in this direction is critical to BuddyPress’s long-term relevance.
It is just not sustainable for us to expect folks to accumulate account after account after account … ad infinitum. What I am wanting is a plugin for WPMU that will allow a new user to register via an existing Facebook/Twitter/OpenID (basically an API for Google, Yahoo!, Blogger, WordPress, and more)/etc. account, allow for certain communications between my blog and the given social network (ie – adding blog comments to a user’s news feed and that sort of thing), AND create a user in my WPMU database, filling in certain profile data brought over from the given social network, such as username, e-mail address, first and last name, age, gender, etc.
This last piece is what seems to be missing in most of the plugins/applications that currently exist. I am not a full-on developer, though I can hold my own while digging through and manipulating php code. It seems to me that this type of application could be built, given the access we now have to this sort of profile data thanks to the OpenID PHP libraries, the Facebook API, Twitter API, etc.
I guess my questions are:
1) Am I completely off base that this sort of thing can be done?
2) Is there a product out there currently doing this (or in development) that I am unaware of?
3) Could we start a project or development group for this?
Again, I am not a full-on developer, but this seems doable, and furthermore, it seems critical to the long-term relevance of a package like BuddyPress. Please accept my apologies if this is redundant, but it seems like a conversation that needs to had again and again until the ball gets really rolling.
