@boonebgorges and his work may help with both

    1. Under BuddyPress, Profile Field Setup, you can add a new field or field group, including text box type fields. As stated on that admin page, “Any fields in the first group will appear on the signup page.” An URL entered will be picked up as a link in the profile’s public view.

While setting up profile fields, have a look at Custom Profile Filters for BuddyPress https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-profile-filters-for-buddypress/ with which, among other features “Administrators can specify certain profile fields that link to social networking profiles.”

    2. See BuddyPress External Group Blogs https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/external-group-blogs/ with which individual users might include RSS in group and site activity streams even without blogs being enabled. See BP External Activity https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-external-activity/ for more admin options, or even FeedWordPress https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/feedwordpress/ for user blogs.

@jeffsayre ‘s right. We figured it out thanks to his McGruff The Crime Dog Hook Sniffer plugin. I highly recommend if you want to do some serious under-the-hood looking

    1) Wherever your bbPress theme is, add a functions.php. eg. my-templates/MY-BB-THEME/functions.php… if you’re using Kakumei, then it would be /bb-templates/kakumei/functions.php.
    2) The path has to be an absolute filepath and not a URL. eg. /var/www/wp-content/uploads/avatars/. I’ve tried to guess where your WordPress install is using $_SERVER, but you might need to adjust this for your particular install.

Have a look at or refer to https://codex.wordpress.org/AJAX_in_Plugins. I’d also suggest you do a find-in-files in BuddyPress for “wp_ajax_” to see how BuddyPress does it.

No one has registered on the site; no users are in the database; registration was set to no until last night. Regardless, the activity stream started to show _______ joined the ________ group. This happened once last night and 3 times yesterday Has anyone else seen this on a site?

What you’re describing is the expected behavior of BP/WPMU. BP is designed to work on a single blog in a WP installation. Additional blogs are more or less totally independent (“more or less” because BP still tracks activity that happens on those blogs).

You might be able to do what you’re trying to do with a plugin like https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpmu-new-blog-defaults/, which lets site/super admins determine defaults on new blogs. You could set your home theme as the default.

If you want to offer child themes, you’ll have to build them. Make them children of your BuddyDress theme, make them available through Site Admin > Themes, and then your users will be able to select them.

A lot has already been written about URL/URI design, the new WordPress 3.0 enhance support for Custom Posts and Custom Taxonomies so I leave it to the reader to “Google-Upon” it to find out out more about it.

The new WordPress additions bring WordPress a step closer to a real CMS system. A step closer since it will bring many new WordPress applications enabled by these new options but it also makes it apparent that it is really in the core a system for building weblogs.

In CMS systems very roughly spoken we have something called nodes which is a very generic “thing” often tied to a unique URL. So /animal/goat is the node about a goat.

To be honest I’m currently totally LOST with regards to the architecture behind WordPress with these new custom posts and taxonomies enhancements.

I just take a little outtake on what’s now present:

    So… the core thing I don’t understand:

    – why is there the difference made in all these types of content while they could have just become the same thing.

In the example above you can decide to make a custom taxonomy for movies e.g. if you write 100 posts about startrek1 an 100 posts about startrek 2 you could make a term “movie” and a taxonomy “startrek1” and “startrek2” to label your posts with. When you then type /movie/startrek1 you get all posts about startrek1. Sadly when you type /movie you do not get all posts where you used a taxonomy related to that term.

In the example above you can also decide to make a custom post type “movie” you can then write a custom post of type movie called “startrek 1” and the benefit is that with /movie/startrek1 you have unique url to your startrek1 postingS(!) and with /movie you get all your movie posts. Nice for url hacking.

In the example above you can also decide to make a custom field “movie” to tie to your e.g. blogpostings. So you write a post about startrek1 and then fill you custom field “movie” with “startrek1”. In this case you do not get any url support…

Is there any difference here what you try to achieve from the point of the social graph/urls? Nope.

Reading through the forums you can now e.g. also see questions about comments. When you tie in buddypress you even could say that /movie/startrek1 could involve your forum or group you wanted on that page.

In short: both in the database storage and is the url representation of “objects” and/or “taxonomies” and/or “whatever” I don’t understand which way all of this is heading.

Because in my viewpoint all of this is much simpler when I look at it from the viewpoint of a url (and url hacking). An endpoint of a url is simply a node, whatever on that node is. It “represents” something that could just as well be the “term”.

I think that (custom) fields, (custom) posts, (custom) taxonomies are all of the same. If I would be a facebook person I would say that /movie/startrek1 is an endpoint for everything around that movie. What I would want is say /contact/edward.de.leau is the node for “me”. and /contact/edward.de.leau/addresses shows then all my addresses. While /address/mystreet_63_amsterdam shows my address and /address/mystreet_63_amsterdam/contacts shows all persons living on that address.

I would expect not only url handling doing this (so everything is clickable) but also the database structure underneath e.g.:

Taxonomies versus Custom Post Types example 1

Suppose you have –whatever- relational database (just pick one) and you want to represent the records as custom-post-types of type

. No problem. Just loop through the list of tables and add them as custom post types (register_post_type(‘
’,$args);). The fields of the records then become custom fields which you attach to this custom post type via e.g. a nice meta box on the right hand side.

So /wp_term_relationships/record_1 would display the contents of that first record another one would be /wp_posts/recorcd_23

The problem is now how you are going to represent the relations between the tables (hence relational database). What you want to indicate is e.g. that with 1 record within a table there are 3 related records in another table e.g. wp_term_relationship –> wp_posts. A nice thing is that /wp_term_relationships shows all records of that table.

Laying the relation now is more difficult since you can not lay relations out of the box. You have two choices here. Since we have two relations outgoing out of the custom posts types either via custom fields or via a custom taxonomy.

    1. via custom fields you would have to code a custom field that does a query on all custom post types of a certain record and then pick the ones that are related. In the gui you then would have to make them links to the correct custom post type object of the related item.

    2. via a custom taxonomy you could create a custom taxonomy per record e.g. wp_term_relationship_record_1 and then “tag” the records that are related with this custom taxonomy.

In terms of work it is the same: you have to go to the specific record and then click either the custom field relations or click the custom taxonomy entries.

The advantage of the taxonomy direction is that it becomes a hyperlink and brings you to a record 1 page where it shows all related records. Unfortunately this is not the custom post record 1 page, so you have to code something for every entry to show to custom post on top (or something likewise).

The advantage of the custom fields is that the items will be more or less more easier to select via your own written selection system. The disadvantage is that they will not be clickable in the gui. So you will have to write that link to the custom post type object yourself AND you will have to add a loop on there yourself showing all related records.

    So in this example:

/wp_posts/ : shows all records out of the box IF using custom fields otherwise shows nothing if using taxonomy
/wp_posts/record23 : shows the record23 posting but the related records you will have to add yourself (when using custom fields) or visa versa: shows all related records but not the custom post object of record 23 itself (when using custom taxonomy).

I don’t know yet which is the easiest way.

One in-the-middle-solution could be to also “tag” the initial record with the custom taxonomy of the relation and then define that one to be “sticky” so that it appears on top and when coding against it so you know which one is the “from” and which ones are the “to”.

I’ve tried implementing this plugin. I’ve placed the plugin in the mu-plugins like they say to do but it does not show up in my admin panel. When I place the plugin in the plugin directory it shows up and I can change the settings. But when I have it in the plugins directory it only shows up for admin and when i send an invitation to someone and they click on the link they get the sorry, this ssite is for invited members only type thing. Can someone please help me get this working?

Im using 1.2.4 for buddypress and wordpress mu.

    Thanks,

I think I’ve solved this problem the same as every here has been describing.

After about 3 re-installs and 10 cups of tea, I finally dawned on me like a chisel falling from the grasp of a tired granite mason.

You do indeed need to install at the domain level, this also includes as I have found, the sub-domain level.

    1) Create sub-domain. http://www.SUB.DOMAIN.com
    2) Fresh wordpress install to your new sub-domain
    3) Then Buddypress install

Hey Presto works, get your self one final cup of your favourite beverage, that you can now take the time to enjoy.
Then get some sleep, you’ve earned it.

my twitter is @samuelmunro if it worked for you or didn’t I’d like to know either way.

The above steps takes into account the understanding that you already know your way around cPanel, at least to the same level as me, which boasting aside is about one level higher than that of a monkey with lobotomy.

Buddypress 1.2.4.1 and WordPress MU 2.9.2

I am constantly getting attacked by Spam Blogs registering to my site and creating blogs.

    I have done the following:

Modified the .htaccess file with the code that is supposed to stop them
Edited the fileds on my registration page
    Changed my registration slug

    Use the following Plugins:

    1. Akismet
    2. Bad Behavior
    3. WP-Ban
    4. WP-SpamFree
    5. WPMU-Block-Spam-By-Math
    6. WPMU Super Captcha
    7. Invitation Code Checker

I also have required fields in my buddypress profile.

What’s happening is these spam blogs are signing up, but somehow bypassing all the required fields. When I look at their profile, the only field filled in is their username. How is this happening? Is there some sort of backdoor signup page that I missing?

When I go to try and signup and leave fields blank it won’t let me on my registration page. So this is just puzzling me.

I have all this protection, but there is a hole somewhere that they are squeezing through. I have googled wordpress spam blogs and followed all the steps in the guides and still, they get in. The only way to stop this is to de-activate people from joining. Which is not what I want to do. I want real people to join.

    http://senilityguild.com/joinsenility/

I eagerly look forward to more help on this.

I just saw “BuddyPress QuickPress” for having User-Blogs posting from the front-end (without going to the Dashboard-interface).

Is anyone using this plugin already ? It says to be working with BP 1.2 ?
Is this plugin working fine or are there any issues with it ?

Please let me know your experiences with this Plugin if you have this in use at your page.

Ok, really sorry about this but I’m a complete newbie to wordpress. My host is 1and1 and I have the installation working, but when I try to activate the buddypress plugin I get the 500 error. I see the recommendation here to modify the .htaccess file, but I don’t have one! Any tips?

I know there are similar forums threads on this subject all over BuddyPress.org so I’m at risk of getting told off for reposting, but the plugin has the potential to be so useful, I think it deserves a bit of encouragement.

@johnjamesjacoby: If you see this. Please, Please, Please reply to some of the forum topics on getting BP Member Filte working. I’m sure you are really busy man, but nobody seems to be able to figure out how to get the plugin to work.

The main problem seems to revolve around the latest version (1.0.3) not working with BP 1.2.2+ and/or the pastebin at (http://pastebin.com/bw0suXwe) code being wrong, out dated or incomplete. I’m not asking you to spend hours improving the plugin. If you could just provide some more extensive documentation, that would be fine.

If anyone else could address some of these issues please do, that would be great.

Here is a comprehensive list of other forum threads on this topic (as far as I have fond), you’ll notice I’ve tried posting on all of them first, before coming here:

Hello! I’m trying to install the Teatro Macigo buddypress child theme. Buddypress is already installed on wordpress without problems. The default theme works fine.

When I attempted to install the Teatro Magico theme, it initially seemed to work. WordPress said that the installation was successful, and the preview worked as well. When I attempted to activate it, it reverted to the default wordpress template. It says that the Teatro Magico theme is broken. The Broken Themes error explanation is as follows:

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

    Name Description
O Teatro Mágico The parent theme is missing. Please install the “bp-sn-parent” parent theme.

Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong here?

Is bp-sn-parent another wordpress theme that I just haven’t downloaded yet?
Can anyone identify it for me?

    Thanks

Ok i get that in theory but the syntax here isn’t making sense. Got the type conditional to work but can’t echo the secondary_item_id object. I really wish the codex for buddypress was as easy to get info from as the wordpress codex. Thank You so much though… you’re the first person to respond to any of my posts.

Yay, I found a plugin that disables display names and forces to show the username on all your bbpress. You can find the plugin here: https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/disable-display-name/

I’ve tested it on bbpress version 1.0.2 integrated with buddypress 1.2.4.1 and wordpress 2.9.2 and so far no bugs.

In reply to: Forums tab not working

Thanks. I went into the admin dashboard under BuddyPress and Forum Setup and this is whatit says:

bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly. If you are having problems you can re-install

NOTE: The forums directory will only work if your bbPress tables are in the same database as your WordPress tables. If you are not using an existing bbPress install you can ignore this message.

Where do I check my bbPress table and database settings?
