ParticipantSorry for the delay in replying, @binaryfabric. I just happened to notice your message in my spam folder.
I didn’t make any more progress with that problem, unfortunately. I’ve also changed jobs and don’t manage that project anymore. Good luck to you!

ParticipantScrew it. I tried to post the code in various ways, but I don’t have time to spend trying to post A SIMPLE COMMENT FFS.
Go to this link and use the code specified in the file.
I hope it’s still available years later when someone stumbles across this comment thread.
BuddyPress forums need some sort of fix for this crap. What an incredible waste of time and energy, just to post a helpful comment that contained code. I’m not a freaking spammer. I mean, if your forum software is needing to be THAT sensitive to fight spam, make us do captchas or some crap to verify we’re ‘human.’
Ya know, I get why spam filters exist, but when they make a site UNUSABLE FOR ACTUAL USERS then your technology is worthless.
Anyhow…lol, end of rant. Here is the link:
I hope this solution helps others as much as it’s helped me. <3

Participant@venutius oh thanks for the suggestions, appreciate the plugin links…but they don’t accomplish what i need to do
i need specific avatars for classes of users, ones that correspond to the styling and hierarchy of my site
so identicons being ‘fun’…? sadly i don’t need fun, lol….i need a streamlined business look and fun with random identicons won’t work
and creating local gravatar avatars for users that ‘don’t have one’ is also random — not corresponding with my site; if i wanted to have default gravatar avatars populate i’d just choose the options that come with WordPress by default — that already is an option
and gravatar is incredibly cumbersome with its pinging to the servers where the gravatars are stored….it may seem minor to many, but it does burden a site
plus, gravatars have weak coding that allow the email address of the user to be ‘scraped’ by bots
so to protect my users from future spam and to keep my site as speedy as possible AND to have my site avatars correspond to the styling of my site i need gravatars to never ever ever be used, and nothing random either

ModeratorAh great! Glad that one is solved. It’s only half of the solution though. These bots will still plague your site with registration requests. To get rid of those try https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-google-recaptcha/ thi sworked like a treat on my sites, totally eliminating spam bot registrations (for now…).

ModeratorI’m not sure anything’s been done with it due to potential issues with spamming users. To work around this my suggestion would be to install one of the BuddyPress Mass Messaging plugins and email all with a link to the activity post. It’s a bit clumsy I know.

ParticipantHere is my theme and a list of plugins, most of which came with the premium theme. There have been no complaints I’ve found of the groups not working “out-of-the-box” with this theme.
*** These were the only plugins that did NOT come with the theme.
Theme: WOffice
Active Plugins:- Akismet Anti-spam
- All in one WP Migration
- BP xProfile Location ***
- BuddyPress
- Buddypress Xprofile Fields Custom Css Classes ***
- DP Pro Event Calendar
- Eonet Live Notifications
- File Away
- GamiPress
- LocateAnything ***
- Slider Revolution
- Unyson
- User Role Editor ***(suggested and tested compatible plugin)
- Wise Chat
- WP ERP
- WP ERP – PDF Invoice
- WP Bakery Page Builder
Still no luck getting group creation working.
Thanks for your response! Any ideas?

ParticipantI installed this plugin and all PM spam stopped ever since. It requires a person to be your friend before they can PM you. https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-private-message-for-friends-only/
DL
ParticipantI just tried disabling BuddyPress PM’s but any member can still send public messages to any other member which still results in an email notification sent out, so a spammer could still use that.
DL
Participant@prashantvatsh Thanks, I didn’t realize that every user could see the /members page and then if they click to a members profile they see the public and private messaging buttons too.
It seems that every new registration on the site automatically becomes a Buddypress member. So then they can see the membership list and message any other user without being a member of any group.
This isn’t good, easy for manual spammers to register and send PM spam to members.
August 15, 2018 at 6:54 pm #275692Topic: Registration form not working
in forum How-to & TroubleshootingPhoenix
ParticipantHello, everyone!
After I have filled the registration form WP redirects me to the Homepage. In users list (Dashboard) I don’t see new user too.
Steps which I tried to resolve the problem:
1) WP in simple mode, not WPMS
2) Dashboard – Settings – checkbox “Users can register” checked
3) Disabled all plugins and checked BuddyPress registration function
4) Changed theme to another one. (I use OneCommunity theme by default)
5) Installed WP Mail SMTP (tried to send messages via php wp_mail & smtp). Both variants work for WP, also checked to send messages via Contact form 7 etc. BUT not sending any mail from BuddyPress
6) Tried to reinstall BuddyPress plugin, still not working
7) There is no hosting problems too…
8) I don’t see another user accounts in Users dashboard.
9) Switched between old and new BuddyPress templates…
10) Additional information:
– WP version 4.9.8
– BuddyPress 3.1.0
– Activated plugins (15): Anti-Spam by CleanTalk, bbPress, BuddyPress, Contact Form 7, No Category Base (WPML), OneCommunity Shortcodes, UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore, UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore, Wordfence Security, WP Mail SMTP, WP Sitemap Page, WP-Polls, WPBakery Page Builder, Yoast SEO Premium, WP Recaptcha Integration.
11) There is no any php errors (when I enable debug) and js errors in browser console.I can’t find another reason why didn’t registration form not working…. Domain – barbiusa58.info
How I can fix it? Thanks in advance)July 9, 2018 at 7:20 pm #275127djsteveb
ParticipantUsing ‘good question’ or similar plugin,
‘graphic captcha’
‘ip geo block’
unfortunately spamshield had some meltdown with the wp.org people so it’s out, but similar functionality for logins and such is in ‘shield’you’ll never stop the manual spammers, if you could stop them, you would be stopping legit users..
on my multi-site I use a plugin that makes all new blogs/aka sites that are created automatically set as ‘search engines do not index’ in settings.. this helps too..
the bp plugin that limits the amount of private messages that can be sent is nice (BuddyPress Private Message Rate Limiter),
one one install I disallow user’s group creation ability – and ask them to send me a note about any new groups that should be made.
also enjoy “register ips” – so I can ban really bad cidrs..

ParticipantHi
I have never actually used the feature of adding custom or editing profile fields. Under Users => Profile Fields, there’s nothing, I guess meaning none have been added manually.
On the Edit User => Extended Profile tab, the only options there are Update Profile from pre-selected “Spammer” to “Active”, which does not work, View Profile and Edit Profile Photo. So I do not see where I could delete that field.

Participant@dggerhart I was able to register for your site without a confirmation email and post “test” comment to your general group. Enabling email confirmation to register will help. Using a checkbox for your Privacy Policy GDPR compliance, is needed and will help too. I would give the Honeypot plugin a try on your staging site (disclaimer, I don’t use, and it’s old) but what it does is pretty simple so it could be ok. Admin notification of new users will help. Manually checking email addresses and questionable profiles (if you have more profile fields) will eliminate the obvious spammers and most are obvious. You can manually approve new users if that won’t be overwhelming. On a different note, you might want to block your dashboard access and you have some html tags displaying. Also a registration menu item (it was hard to figure out how to register) are some things I noticed too. I hope you find this helpful

ParticipantHi David,
This is very common problem that we all are facing with the Buddypress websites. The combination of registration process that I am using to stop it
1. I have enabled social login as it is very easy for users to login with almost no spam users. Every users is having a google or facebook account. It increases the engagement of users also.
2. Restrict sign up with only a few legit and popular email domains like GMAIL, YAHOO, MSN aor anything u want. You can use BP Restrict Signup By Email Domain plugin.June 20, 2018 at 7:17 am #274573Venutius
ModeratorI still use Wanguard, it still works for checking the validity of email addresses. I notice recently however that I’m getting a large number of spam registrations from domains ending with .xyz or .top so I ended up forking r-a-y’s plugin BP Restrct Signup by Email Domain, turning it into a blacklist intead of a whitelist. My new plugin is called BP Blacklist Signup by Email Domain, I’ll be uploading it to the repository later. This seems to be working well on my systems so far – not had any spam registrations get through for the last few days whereas without it I was getting about 8-12 per day.

ParticipantThanks for the suggestion, Varun. I’ll read about it.
For the record, here’s a link for anyone reading this in the future:
Discusses the options, and ‘wares to deploy … but seems really dated.
WordPress.com suggests:
https://github.com/pixeljar/BuddyPress-Honeypot
But I can’t verify it’s compatible with the newer systems (6 years old.)
My problem persists, but seems to run in spurts…
