If you have a look at the roadmap you can see that in the next major version we can expect fine grained privacy control.

I believe Jeff, one of the moderators here, is working on a privacy component, that might make it into core. I don’t know when he will release it, though.

In the meantime, you can copy registration/register.php from your parent theme to your child theme and add a sentence that profile pages are publicly accessible, so it’s not a good idea to save any credit card details…

    Thank you, Jeff.

I did go ahead and update Mootools and modify the plug-in as per their specifications (replacing the “$”) but I could not get it to work.

So, it’s back to how it was (only working on the front page)

…but I’m determined to make it work since I love my theme and it’s up and ready with cool features like the cinema effect, the sliding Image Menu header, toggle features, and the vertical slide box, and I don’t want to re-do it all over again in a new framework.

I’d love to hear how the Mootools slider might work in the profiles area. I’m looking for a way to present a vertical slider where members can toggle among activity, groups joined and friends.

Lucky you. I had to install a plugin and edit CSS files to get rid of that ugly thing at the top. My guess would be that removing the Buddybar is a feature of “Arthemia Premium theme”.

I have not heard of this specific behavior before. Are you using a custom theme or the default parent/child theme that comes with BuddyPress? Have you deactivated all other plugins except BP to see if that makes a difference.

When having issues with BP, you need to boil everything down to the the lowest, common denominator–use the default BP theme and deactivate all other plugins except BP. If the issue goes away, then you most likely have a problem with a custom theme, a plugin conflict, or both.

Well, I appreciate the sentiment but I do not consider myself the most important. That is why I’m sleeping now. ;)

To reconfirm what both Paul and John said above, Andy is the only official core BP developer. There are no other official core developers at this time. The rest of us play our various roles, trying to pitch in where we think we’ll have some positive impact.

From those who file bug tickets and offer patches, to those who create new plugins and themes, and to those who answer questions in the forums and IRC, it is truly the contributions of the overall community that make and will continue to make BuddyPress a strong product.

Irrespective of application, the MooTools framework and the jQuery toolkit do not always play well together.

So, it is not that MooTools is not allowed in BuddyPress, it is that since jQuery is the Javascript library selected to be used in BP, you may have issues when trying to get MooTools to function properly in BP.

    A couple of suggestions:

    • If by chance you are using Slimbox make sure it is Slimbox2 and not Slimbox1, as the latter relied on the Mootools framework. Slimbox2 was rewritten to utilize jQuery.
    • The use of the “$” can be a big source of the conflict. Both MooTools and jQuery attempt to claim the “$” as their own.
    • Finally, if you are not running the latest version of MooTools, upgrading may help as version 1.2.3 introduced framework compatibility mode. Read more about it here:

Yep, the template overlap is the issue, and this should a major design concern in the architecture I suggested: to design the buddypress functional theme layer in such a way that it overlaps as little a possible with different parent themes.

And yes, this is a future release issue.

Hah! I finally found what was wrong!

It’s not possible to use a secondary blog as the “material/theme” for Buddypress. At least not for the forums. It has to be the primary blog (that has incorporated BP).

Changing which blog that is this on bb-config.php doesn’t help.

    $bb->wordpress_mu_primary_blog_id = 2;

Well, now I at least know why I had my problems.

I’ve marked this thread as resolved. Please change it back to ‘not resolved’ if you’ve still got this problem after you have moved the themes.

@John James Jacoby – I’m using the BuddyPress 1.1 theme.

@Jeff Sayre – In the permalinks options though the input field has a prefix (un-editable) saying /blog. What is supposed to happen is WPMU adds /blog to the url automatically for your main blog. But it’s not doing. I’m guessing the new 1.1 theme of BuddyPress is perhaps breaking this? OR the BuddyPress plugin itself.

    #54730

@driz, are you saying that your main blog is missing the “/blog”? If so, are you using a custom theme of some kind?

@Bolonki, I’m going to play devils advocate for a second and probably take the wrong side of this conversation, but the problem with query reduction in a social networking platform is that the only way to do it is to limit the available run-time data, or rearrange data structures to the point where other plugins can’t tap into them or repurpose them.

BuddyPress itself is a core set of 9 plugins, an abstraction layer for WPMU blogs, an API for bbPress, and comes with an elaborate set of functions and API to retrieve that data and use it in a theme; and most of this is accessible on almost every page of your website. If you need the functionality that BuddyPress provides, then hopefully you’re prepared for the overhead it takes to have all of those resources available. If you don’t need parts of it, you can turn them off and reduce queries.

This isn’t to say that BuddyPress doesn’t strive to be efficient, and in future versions you can bet that as more people become actively involved in the project that it will only get better.

Everyone has parts of web development that they’re passionate about. Some people dig SEO, some love web standards, others are worried about queries, and others are worried about server speed. There’s a lot of roles and lots of talent paying attention to all of the different aspects of what makes this all work. Remember that this is an open project, and we welcome you or anyone else to take a look at ways to make the platform better and are genuinely excited for anyone to contribute in any way.

I’m curious how many queries other social network sites use on a single page load. Can you imagine how many servers Facebook must use? Or wordpress.com? Must be pretty intense to manage all that data and traffic.

Sgrunt!! What’s the word on the street for a front/home page status feeder????

I have a lot of request pertaining to this, curious to see what will come in the future. Any twinkies you could lay on us at this point???

I can only assume this would be classified under an optional widget for the home page. Site wide activity is great, wanna just fine tune the front page feeds to status if possible.

Also how and the heck can we get rid of the permalinks attached to the side wide activity that streams to our home page, every blurb comes with a permalink attached (looks janky)

    Thanks

    Jason

Mfjmk – would love to include it. If it’s not too much trouble, could you pop me a quick PM here when you have it updated? I have about 3-4 weeks left before the book is ready for print (according to me editor)

    Thanks alot! :)

As long as you don’t re-declare a function in your child theme’s functions.php, it should work. Basically use it as a place for new stuff, you don’t need to duplicate the stuff in the parent theme.

A few things to consider when seeing….(white screen)

First, if you are creating sub domains for each individual blog make sure the blogs are being confirmed through the submitted email during registration. you will see a white screen for every blog not confirmed.

Second, make sure all permissions are enabled in your dashboard, this too causes white screens for different blogs.

Third, make sure you deleted the bp themes in from the /mu-content/ root and that they are installed through the /mu-plugins/ not /plugins/

Fourth, a lot bp plugins take some sort of config to work correctly, sucks I know but true so I would definitely follow DJ Puals advice and deactivate all plugins while you try my suggestions.

You might be thinking that it’s a lot more difficult than that but Sometimes it’s as simple as that.

Oh, it seems it was only me that was the bug. :)

I didn’t have the theme-files in the proper place. I still can’t find root/forums but I guess I’ve done something wrong there also.

With Andy’s change in WP 2.9, regarding where the themes should be, I guess this will be an error of the past.

First of all, you are posting in a thread that is marked as resolved and is more than five months old. Please read this thread for more details why this can be an issue.

Secondly, we have no information on your current setup. One could assume that you are still using RC-2 since this thread pertains to that version.

Finally, see if this post in the linked-to thread answers your question:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-plugins-and-theme-not-loading#post-17586

I’m closing this thread as any further discussion should take place in a new thread.

Are you using a custom theme and have called bp_the_body_class() directly? A quick look at the code reveals that will cause missing argument errors but if this is on the default theme the error is a bit deeper and we’ll need to dig further.

If it doesn’t work on the default BuddyPress theme that comes with BuddyPress, it’s not going to work on third-party themes.

    13. the page just goes blank at login on IE7

If you look at your web server/php error log when this happens, is any message given? Also, if you disable BuddyPress and log in on IE7 via http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/, does that work?

    @David

Thanks. I hope you’re right. I’m designing a site that will integrate BP functionality throughout in widget areas and the BP pages. Once I get used to using hooks in WP through functions.php, it should be OK.

Also have to learn some advanced CSS to make it all sing.

@wordpressfan. My theme probably won’t be much use to anybody else, but I think the plugins I have to build will be helpful extensions of WP/BP. I actually started designodyssey.org to chronicle what I’m learning as I build the site I’m primarily working on.
