I have installed Buddypress on wordpress MU. I have added a notifications widget to my right bar.
problem is when i click on the notifications received, it gets automatically deleted from notifications.
i want those notifications to be there, if the user has not yet Confirmed the Request.
As soon as the user confirms the request it should be deleted from notifications.
I am one of three finalists in a Papa John’s “Create your own Specialty Pizza” contest, and to the point where I have to develop and execute a marketing strategy – nationwide – to sell as many of my pizzas (The Big Bonanza) in August as possible, beating the other two finalists.
Papa John’s (PJ) is making and offering all three on their menu August 2-29, and while I have what I think is a strong approach for such a quick turnaround promo period, I do not have much experience with website management software. I happen to be a marketer, which is what drew me to the competition, but we’re basically asked to do this with $1,000 that they’re giving us (I have to pay taxes on it, so I’m already down to $700) and I am hoping to get smart professionals on my side who what to help for the social media experience of this experiment. I think if I set if up right, the results of this will provide marketers with a great snapshot of what works/didn’t work in turning social media “fans” into paying customers. I’m at no shortage for ideas on what to do once the site is up (celebrity endorsements, mock beer/wine pairings with my pizza, challenges for free PJ gift cards, etc), but REALLY NEED YOU HELP ON THE TECHNICAL SIDE OF DEVELOPING MY SITE AND ONLINE TOOLS. That said, here is my approach and my questions for you, my brilliant sounding board:
Plan: Find a web development tool (free or nearly free) that will allow me to create and customize a social website that a dummy (me) can manage. On this site, I’d like for visitors to be able to upload their own videos of them eating my pizza, talking about it, etc, comment on posts, vote for fave videos, and forward posts to their friends via email, FB or Twitter. I’d also like the site to prompt people to sign up for email alerts throughout the contest and link to PJ’s online locator of PJ stores and online ordering system. Secondly, I’d like to set up a texting option for people to text “pizza” to 12345 for periodic updates throughout the contest.
Questions:
1) Will Buddypress work for me in delivering what I want to do, how I want to customize it, and be easy for me to use? (To qualify: I am familiar with wordpress as I use it for my company’s blog).
2) Will buddypress give me a way to manage the email addresses I’m hoping to collect? Will they let me do this through my thebigbonanza@gmail.com account that I’m currently promoting in local press?
3) With the whole texting campaign- where do I go/how do i get a 5-6 digit # to promote as the # to send their text to? Will i get a database of these peoples’ #s to send out in mass when I send out my updates? Does anyone know how i can do this on the cheap?
4) Who wants to help? I am in it to win it with this contest, and because my company is supporting me, I am approaching this as an experiment that I’d like to turn into a case study once I win (fingers crossed). I am adding a “Partners” page to my website to recognize those people and companies whose expertise contributed to my win, and whose skills I plan on promoting nationwide with the buzz of my win and methods used. Papa John’s is doing an outstanding job promoting this contest in mainstream and social media, and coupling the results of their contest with the tools I used to win will hopefully help marketers better understand what elements work/don’t when it comes to transitioning online ‘fans’ into customers. Again – whose in? I can’t pay for services, but WILL send you some pizzas once I win!

is there a way to hide all members from all other members completely – I know that i can just loose the “members” page but what about search engines picking them up and the site search component picking them up I know this might seem contrary to what buddypress was invented for but it’s for a very specific usage – i will be creating custom post types in wordpress and i will have all the connection done through those

Ah Peter, without visionaries such as yourself, how would we ever have got to where we are..?! Growing out of rigid definitions into new flexibility is where the virtual world is heading, like it or not. Everything you see online now will be long dead in five years, and all the concepts you hold dear buried deep. Might as well get used to it.
BuddyPress is a mess, as I see it. It isn’t really anything, and at the same time it’s too much. If I want a community conversation stream, along with simple WordPress themes, etc., there’s Mingle. If I want a forum on my site that’s easy too; there’s BBPress, Mingle Forum, etc. If I want member groups regardless of these, there’s, erm… there’s… well, BuddyPress does that, kind of, in a big and over-complicated way.
BuddyPress should be about making social contacts. The name’s a bit of a clue, right? In other words, friends and contacts with grouping of such, contact streams, and strong privacy for users so they determine who sees what they post. On top of that, as it’s a social tool; community moderation/banning, and reporting to site admins in a simple and obvious way. Oh, and of course, easy to see notifications such as friend/contact requests, etc. Who thought it was a good idea to *include* forums in all of this, and relate them to groups?! Each entity and its associated operations should be separate and self-sustaining. Basic OOP.
It just doesn’t do anything easily, does it? And the hype on the download pages about plugins to do whatever you like is just hype, really. Oh, it ‘kind of’ does everything you want, but only kind of. You have to jump through hoops, and even then you’re fighting with a forum which tries to be a group trying to hold conversation streams together.
I’m interested in productive discussion about social networking sites and their take-up and impact, though not here as I feel it’s not the right place. For one thing, the developers and those who kiss up don’t like to hear how their baby was malformed from the start. If anyone is interested in finding solutions to creating truly interactive social networks in the easiest and most stable way possible at present, please email any-name-you-like at our domain.
I know – you are probably sick of updates – but what’s more fun than creating something from nothing?

Moodle is now operational – the login ID is now tied to the WordPress login. Students no longer need to register twice – but only once. The same login ID and password used at the front of the site is the same as the moodle account.Number 2:

This is an embedded PDF containing links to the vocabulary students are to memorize. If the student clicks on the link then the vocabulary loads – and provides an opportunity for the kids to play hangman, solve a crossword puzzle, etc.

BuddyPress was updated to the latest stable version – with some additional plugins and edits. Theme changes in Moodle and MediaWiki to accept the navigation. Embed plugin for PDFs and web into the Wiki.Bragging stuff:

1. The photos album is going to be expanded. I can’t wait for the BP Album + …
2. Bug fixes: I suspect once kids start using this thing again – they’ll find problems and want things changed.
3. Embed learning guides so they do not need to be downloaded.
4. Performance on BuddyPress is really poor. This is due to RackSpace, their MA and lack of being able to use expired headers and gzip. I cannot use minify either. This causes plugin errors to crop up. These problems are supposed to be fixed in W3-Total-Cache next release.
5. More content! Yes. While there are over 550 articles, so much detail is missing. So lets hope I can convince kids to actually add more content
PROJECT PENDING G.C.S.N.S.
The GEO CLASSIFIEDS SOCIAL NETWORK SYSTEM will be power by wordpress3, buddypress1.2.5 and gpress. It will be a highly modified system with 60+ plugins it will also be laying the groundwork for a never before seen type of classified system very few classifieds even use maps and there the most advanced. Although gpress is in a very early beta state its the best time to get ideas for development going. We also need a name for the site but for now its the gcsns project.
So why go head to head with the likes of craigslist? Frist off it hurts my eyes with its plain like early 95 web design. 2nd we can speed up communication by offering better contact methods with the use of social technology. In the end you will still give out the info like you do on craigslist but you can stop wasting your time with unneeded vist to your house by buyers that just end of being lookers that dont buy. A webpage with a phone number only goes so far (as in your how many mins you have) so lets end the use of bad design and a gamed system to a system thats solid and frist off can expand.(go wp!)
