    bbimg My attempt at photos…

This is my first post in any sort of WordPress related project, and with me using it so much I finally wanted to start giving back. I have a few plugins and Ideas that I have been working on that I think I’ll just give away instead of hiding them away on whatever servers I put them on. I am starting to do a lot more work with elements that I cant find already made so I have to make them, but then I forget that someone else may need that same thing.

With that, I am the webmaster of a small(3,000 users) site that is a social network for models and those in the modeling agency. Right now its totally free as we are building a userbase. Soon that will change as well as the engine we are running on. It is old, slow, I didn’t make it, and wont scale so I have been searching for a replacement and I was going to use JoomSocial, but I decided against it as I would rather foster this project.

At the modeling website there are thousands upon thousands of images as that is the users primary resource and reason for being online. So I have decided to work on a plugin to handle the images and albums. I have written a outline in my project notebook, but would love some feedback. My plan is to update this thread as I progress.. I have a week until next semester so that should be plenty of time to get a beta out..

Some of this is in coding format, but no real lines of code yet..

    HERE WE GO!!

    • First the user clicks add photos, a page loads with a single field and a MORE button.
    • once all photos are selected the user POSTS data to the same page.

(note) More AJAX’y stuff could go on here, but I’m keeping it simple at first..

    • checks that file is image type, makes all lowercase, renames jpeg to jpg.
    • all files converted to jpg(or whatever file type)
    • Checks if height > width, then checks larger value against max_width/max_height.
    • Resizes with correct ratio.
    • sets image quality
    • Generates filename from userID and photokey such as 1234_15.jpg
    • Photo uploaded to image directory

It keeps the data as session data and moves to creating a thumbnail

    • Admin sets weather to resize, crop, or scale images. Does so to set options
    • Thumbnail uploaded to thumbnail directory (SAME FILE NAME)

Then comes what we are doing to the database.. I had TONS and TONS of ideas for this, and was trying to avoid creating MORE tables for each user, if they have a blog they already have 8!! So what I have done is added 4 fields to Usermeta, and created two sitewide tables called images and albums.

      Usermeta

    • Photokey – key that a user adds to each time a image is uploaded. No duplicate image names in a database or directory.
    • Albumkey – Same thing.
    • Albums – Names of albums user has created, this is to relive querys to other tables as usermeta is loaded automatically.
    • Tagged – This is ALL PHOTOS the user is tagged in, returns an array

The larger of the two tables is Images, it holds all the data for each image in the directory.

    • Key
    • image name – I used 1234_15.jpg earlier.. extension could be left off..
    • user – this is so wp doesnt have to parse the image name.
    • active – When a user elects to delete an image it is first switched to inactive, this gives the user time to “un-delete” a file, while also allowing an administrator to remove all files in a single action reducing storage size and server load. I plan on doing this during lower traffic hours as a cron job.
    • albums – this is to reduce query load when someone wants to display the name of the album a image is in, and allows direct targeting of the album table.
    • date – timestamp when uploaded.
    • Caption
    • Comments – my plan for now is a hack job of a very long array.. I dont think anyone will max out a data field for a image with too many comments..
    • Tags – userid’s of those tagged.

    Then the Albums table:

    • key
    • Album name – userid_albumkey
    • userid – who made the album
    • Title
    • Caption
    • Comments
    • Date
    • active
    • List of image names in this album. Returns an array.

    WHEEEEW!!

    how to call it:

    • get_album(“id”, maxdisplay, number of tags, number of comments,); returns markup
    • get_img(“name”, options);
    • get_thumb(“name”);
    • get_img_data(“name”, options); if left blank all data is loaded as img_id, img_caption, etc..
    • get_tagged_img(); returns a list of all images person has been tagged in.
    • get_album_info(); same as img, useful if say you just wanted the names for a carousel or slider..

Of course tagging would call an event or whatever BB uses for its “wire” I havent learned enough of that code yet but Its in the works.

a user can un-tag themselves from any image, and it would remove it from the image database as well as the meta data. It would work the same when deleted..

What do you guys think? What should I kill immediately, or what should I add? I will have a TON of configurable options for admins, but didnt want to post all that.

Well thats it for now I guess, I’ll start coding the meat of it tomorrow..

    -Dennis..

I have selected all three check boxes yet there is no Insert or embed video option beside the Insert custom character like in the wordpress default installation.

Is it not available for wpmu?

So far I have tested I can only add video links….

I think this capability is something important that is missing in bp groups. The concept of group and its integration with bbpress are certainly expanding the users interaction within bp groups; yet the privacy of groups discussion is not assured.

Firstly, is there a quick fix to autohide all bp groups forum from bbpress forum? I have not enabled group forum support because of this issue; and currently only using a separate install of bbpress integrated with wordpress as a place for general forum discussion. Hiding the whole forum is certainly not a totally acceptable solution especially when there are thousands of existing topics that are already there and not associated with any groups.

Secondly, what is the code to check if the logged user is a member of a group with forum id that can be done from bbpress with deep integration; this could be added in bbpress to limit access to group topics where the logged in user is not a member.

After searching & searching I cant for the life of me find how to turn on moderate new members.

I was sure I saw a setting in the admin panel for this but now cant find it. Which led me to believe maybe I was going mad, but then I read this:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-registration-options/

So… can someone please tell me where in my admin panel the option is to turn on member moderation?

Basically accounts need to be approved before they join the site.

    thanks pcwriter.

Yes the pages widget works and shows my pages, but it still looks ugly compared to a classic wordpress menu system with drop downs.

I also use the email login plugin, but generate a username from the fullname using Javascript (link is for blogname from blog title, but the principle is the same). I think that’s a cleaner solution that avoids a lot of the issues you ran into.

    Hello,

I’m working with WordPress MU 2.8.6 and Buddypress 1.1.3

I have successfully set up forums under the buddypress menu. However, when I set up a group (and enable discussion forums) I am still unable to post a new topic. I click on the “post new” link and nothing happens. Help most appreciated.

    thanks

As for your other question, here are a few places to start:

    1) Make a Gender field and a Enter the Competition field in Dashboard > BuddyPress > Profile Fields. Make sure they’re required on registration.

    2) If by “top nav menu” you mean the thing that floats across the top of the screen, you can add to it by creating a button inside of a php function, then using add_action to attach the function to the bp_adminbar_menus hook. See buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-adminbar.php to see how it works in the core code.

    3) Use a plugin like JJJ’s https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-member-filter/ to create the filters that will populate the pages that the “Men” and “Women” dropdowns will point to.

    I have a website http://peaksoverpoverty.org

I would like to keep the website as is for the main site, but enable buddypress profile capabilities for my users. So if a user registered and had the domain http://tony.peaksoverpoverty.org, then I could have tony’s user profile like:

    http://testbp.org/members/caiado/

Does anyone know of an easy way to do this?

I guess if this is not possible, do I have to somehow convert my current wordpress theme to a buddypress theme? If so, any useful tutorials?

    Thanks!

    Hey guys,

I’ve been searching for this plugin since i’ve been creating in WordPress!

    I’ve found it :D

To get a mulit lang BACK-END ( Note: this will not effect your front-end in any way! ), please follow the follwing steps:

    1. Download : http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-native-dashboard/

    2. Upload it to the /wp-content/ folder, and activate it ( not sidewide )

    3. Got to : http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/ and select the language templates needed for you site ( note: download both the .po and .mo file! )

    4. In your /wp-content/ folder, create a folder named: languages

    5. Upload your .po and .mo files to that /languages/ folder

    6. Set your settings in your Settings / Native Dashboard page, and you’re all done!

    I hope you enjoy!

    Cheers,

P.S.: I failed to mention that the second blog uses the buddypress theme too. Maybe I can achieve a more “secondary blog” customization changing the theme, am I correct?

    I’m totally a newbie.

I have a working buddypress/WP installation, I’m still working to get in the new mentality required to understand some processes.

    I have some questions:

    – what is Disable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing for?

    – I’m still trying to understand the blog philosophy of WP. It seems like that buddy press is a sort of social oriented blogs container. In this container the users could create a blog. I disabled the blog creation feature for the normal user and I have created just two blogs, now I have some trouble to understand:

    — once a new user is registered, is it registered to buddy press, to WP or to the single blog? It looks like it’s registered to buddy press, but a WP profile is created too, why?

    — it looks like the first created blog works as “main blog” , in fact, the header line title appears to be the name of the first created blog. If I switch to another blog, the header title won’t change. Is this meant to be? Anyway this feature doesn’t bother me, the only problem I’m having is that I’d like instead to customize the top-right tab menu, since I don’t want “Groups” and “Members” appears for the secondary blog.

    — on the secondary blog, while the “Recent Posts” widget works nicely, if I click on the “Blog” tab, the site will show me “The page you were looking for was not found.” Is it because the user is not a subscriber of the blog?

–if this is the reason, how can I make a new user subscriber of both the blogs once registered? Another solution could be let the blog to be read even by not subscribers.

    – Is there a way to let the group be created only by the admin? If yes, can you show me how?

    – Is there somewhere an help page where I could have found the answer to my questions?

Thank you for your really appreciated help!

The first way is for users that may have been registered before BuddyPress was installed. They can still login, post comments, and use the forums, but if they never edited their profile and set their display name(fullname), BuddyPress won’t find them.

The second is if a user edits their profile from the WordPress side (firstname, lastname, nickname) without changing their BuddyPress display name. At that point the two will be out of sync.

It’s possible to hook into the save profile action of WordPress and change the BuddyPress display name when the user changes their WordPress nickname, but some sites may want a combo of the firstname/lastname while others may want to use the nickname, and others still may not really even care or use either. From that perspective it makes sense to not have BuddyPress try to interfere too deeply with syncing profile fields that might not have a direct 1 to 1 relationship with each other.

Please, don’t cram BP full of this type of features! Leave them to third parties; basic free plugins, sophisticated paid plugins, external apps with a plugin interface, etc.

There are already so many WordPress plugins available. Why not start with adapting and extending those, instead of reinventing the wheel within BP.

Please core developers, concentrate on the core! Make sure it’s clean, solid and secure. Concentrate on APIs that make it easier for third parties to hook into BP.

Photo albums may be core to some, but not for everybody. I can think of dozens of other applications that could be core to someone; event management, mailing lists, groupware, file sharing, paid membership levels, video galleries, group video editing, chat rooms, video conferencing, shopping cart, credit card payment bridge, mobile apps, geolocation … etc.

haloid – I wrote a plugin for group invitations that uses the same autocomplete code as the messaging system to allow group mods to invite any member to a group: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/invite-anyone/. So it’s definitely possible to extend BP to do what you’re asking. I haven’t looked at the code for messaging, but if it’s anything like the invite code, it’d be pretty easy to do. A quick glance at bp-messages.php makes it look like you could probably alter BP to do what you want it to do by finding the function messages_ajax_autocomplete_results in bp-messages.php, commenting out the code that populates $friends, and replacing it with a list of all site members (you could use exactly the code I use in the Invite Anyone plugin).

Better still would be to build it into a plugin. Wouldn’t be too hard. If I get a chance in the next few weeks, I might take a look at it.
