    1.) yes, the group admin can add other admin/moderator and ban users

    2.) they need to join your group, then under group memebrs you can add them as an admin/moderator

    3.) this is possible yes, I accomplished this by adding <?PHP if is admin ?> into the bp-core to hide the create group button from non-admins (your community will want the ability to add groups though)

    4.) you can create “private groups” that are visible to everyone, but you can only join if you’re accepted…

    why don’t you create a couple different types of groups, then you’ll see all the features/abilities they have

    Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for that (oh and for your tweet yesterday!). I had already looked at your plugin actually. It doesn’t quite have the functionality I’m after in this specific case.

    What I’m after would actually be solved by allowing non-members to see the members of private groups, hence my other post.

    Philip-

    We are working on a proper privacy component for BuddyPress that will allow for a given member to decide how much of their personal data they want to expose to the world. This not only includes their profile data, but also a member’s data contained in the other BuddyPress components.

    As far as group-specific privacy control, that is also an area we are discussing.

    Is there, or could there be, a way to display members of a group to non-members?

    On Facebook, for instance, invite-only groups are still accessible by non-members who can see anyone that has been accepted into the group.

    The three different group settings (public, private and hidden) are good but they lack flexibility.

    I think it\’d be much better to have a range of settings, such as;

    – Anyone can see this group | Only invitees can see this group

    – Anyone can join this group | Only invitees can join this group

    – Members can invite others | Only admins can invite others

    – Allow non-members to see group wire

    – Allow non-members to see group form

    – Allow non-members to see members

    – Anyone can write on this group\’s wire | Only members can write on the wire

    – Anyone can post on the group forum | Only members can post

    This would allow much more freedom for group/site admins.

    What does everyone else think?

    @DJPaul any ETA on how long after v1 it might be?

    Also is there any way to just limit members viewing privileges solely to the groups to which they are subscribed. So for instance if I, as a new member, sign up on a blog I could be automatically relegated to a specific private group. From there I would only be able to see and friend others in my own group?

    I haven’t dug around in the code too much to see about this but intend to. Has anybody done this that you know about?

    Hi Andy

    I would have sent you a private message but I’m not sure if that can be done here. I thank you for the great work you have done on BuddyPress. I have it installed and am very happy with it.

    I know you are a busy man but I (and a few others) have noticed that the BuddyPress demo has a visual verification system enabled which I assume is a plugin (perhaps you modified the one from the dev site to get it to work properly – I don’t know).

    I just wanted to ask if you could please zip up whatever visual verification system you are using on the BuddyPress demo site and make it available as a download or tell us what modifications we need to make (if any) to get the one at the dev site to work like it does on the BuddyPress site.

    Thanks so much for your consideration and for all you have done for Buddy

    Press.

    Sincerely, BPFan (Steve)

    This is a future concept idea that I came up with a few months ago.

    I don’t think it’s a completely new idea.

    I have noticed (as have web trend bloggers) that E-mail is on the decline in social circles and social networking messaging (chat, private messages) are taking its place. However, E-mail still has an important function in business.

    What if social networking messaging could replace email seamlessly!

    So, if you send me an email at lukejanicke@facebook.com, it shows up in my Facebook Inbox. If I send a private message from BuddyPress to my friend at myfriend@gmail.com, then BuddyPress moves the message from the social networking protocol to the SMTP protocol. My friend gets a normal email in their Gmail account from lukejanicke@buddypress.com. If I send an “email” from BuddyPress to Facebook, it is transferred from one social network to another using an E-mail-like protocol. If BuddyPress could do this, it would set the precedent for the evolutionary integration of E-mail into the Web 2.0/3.0 world.

    People could forget about traditional E-mail, but those who still use it remain in full communicability with the next generation.

    Have I explained the concept?

    well, private messaging is still not working on the site, so here’s the download link:

    I’d appreciate all feedback. You can mail to me or reply on the plugin thread.

    Thanks again, I really appreciate your time.

    Hi Enlightenmental1,

    The functionalities/features of the Photo Album plugin so far are:-

    * Create unlimited number of albums

    * Inserted unlimited number of photos into each album

    * Album Cover Selector

    * User comments per album and per photo

    * Owner of the album/photo can moderate all comments

    * Users can alter their own comments in the album/photo

    * Automatic image resizing and optimisation

    * Permalinks to albums and photos

    My plan (which can change) is as follows (in no particular order):-

    * Twitter Integration

    * JavaScript Thumbnail Cropping

    * Create an AJAX driven interface – but only when the main extras of the plugin are complete (easier this way and for SEO reasons)

    * Website Administrator Settings – number of albums, photos users can have, and/or user upload limits.

    * Handle other media like videos.

    I generally don\\\’t like to release a unfinished product until it\\\’s stable enough in my own opinion, otherwise it\\\’s too hard to administrate feedback and ideas when I know some little parts are broken here and there.

    However, if anyone would like to get a glance at the plugin first, drop me an email though my website (http://www.dallasjclark.com/contact.php) or directly here on BP.

    In the future:

    I will be happy for other developers to make improvements or the general public to submit ideas, however every line of code will be moderated and thoroughly checked. The licence of the plugin will be GPL sometime soon.

    Donations:

    I have in the past tried to do things for free, however when you have a home loan to pay and a family to look after, doing work for free isn\\\’t as easy. Especially when I have an endless number of projects lined up that will pay me.

    The plugin I\\\’ve created so far, already has a sponsor but only a small one. I\\\’m working on this plugin 3 hours a week, and both the sponsor and I would like to see more. I\\\’m not asking anyone to fork out hundreds of $\\\’s (would be nice and I would only ever be so kind) but it would be great to get a few dollars here and there.

    For anyone\\\’s interest for my credibility, these are some of the projects I\\\’ve worked on and currently working on.

    Free Projects (see I did do some free work :P)

    * Particls – http://www.particls.com

    * Peepel – http://www.peepel.com (25% of my development time was paid for)

    Paid Projects

    * WOMF – http://www.womf.com – In Particular v3 (http://cairns.womf.com)

    * Fitnice – Gym / Club Membership Management and Billing Software – converting to Adobe AIR and iPhone shortly.

    There are more projects but some of them are private and cannot be discussed.

    Any further queries, let me know.

    I think I got this one… I just deleted any checks for private or public in the file listed above and it was fine. Since we are running a unique install, we don’t care if the blog is public or private.

    kennibc
    Participant

    In the file: /mu-plugins/bp-blogs/bp-blogs-classes.php

    Change wb.public =1 to wb.public = -1

    Change b.public =1 to b.public = -1

    This allows me to show the blogs in profile pages and the blogs directory since they are all private on our site. We have a walled garden for K-12 education. But my question is this: How do I make it so that whether the blog is private or public it shows up on the BP site.

    Can I just delete the code that is checking to see if the blogs are public or private? What should I do? Thanks! Please be specific as to what code changes I might need to make.

    Chris

    PS. What is happening is that the site is setup to have everything private, but we now have some blogs that are public. Once I make the blog public it disappears from the profile as well as other places. I guess I don’t care whether the blog is public or private, I want it to show up and be accessed by BuddyPress.

    to aggregate forum(bbpress) posts(title/links ) in the user profile page with option to public or private. That will be very cool.

    hmmmmmmmmmm…

    I do not find any option, to do that:

    Only these informations are getting listed:

    Activity Streams

    Blog Tracking

    bbPress Forums

    Friends

    Groups

    Private Messaging

    Comment Wire

    Extended profiles

    What shall I do now?

    I wouldn’t mind to pay if service like wpmudev premium exists for buddypress.

    For example, a plugin to limit private messages user can send for each user…

    blah, blah, blah… :)

    @Jimcipriani

    Okay, I read your request differently.

    <>I need 2 groups of Groups: Practice Groups and Offices</>

    By this, do you mean that your client has employees that fall into what they term practice groups? Such as, lawyers or doctors who are “in practice”. If so, then how many practice groups and how many offices do they have?

    The best way to do this would be to disallow the creation of groups by anyone except the site admin or a few, select group admins–for lack of a better term. Then the group admins would create all the necessary Practice Groups and Offices groups, making them public or private as needed.

    Since it seems that you are simply dealing with nomenclature, it is overkill to create a new component with the exact same functionality but with a different slug name.

    @Stefk, try Burtadsit’s solution.

    Private members and groups sections should be a core feature of Buddypress imho.

    Is it possible to have a buddypress as private?

    If so, how do i create the social network to be completely private? in otherwords, the homepage will have a log in / password spot and a sign up area that will require an email responder based on an approval process, and thats it. Once we have approved the user, they can log in and it opens up the network.

    Thanks,

    I succesfully installed WPMµ ( beta 2.7-r1722), BuddyPress (trunk r1324), the forum Bbpress (1.0-alpha6), and the BuddyPress Group Forums plugin (last version 0.35 I think), everything seemed to be OK (amazing ?!), once I imported groups in the Bbpress admin/bpGroups.

    But this morning I turned a group Public to Private, but it remains Public in the Bbpress Forums frontend.

    Also, when I rename a group forum in BuddyPress, the name is not edited in Bbpress.

    I noticed that when I Import Groups another time in the bpGroups admin of Bbpress, details of groups like Public/Private/Hidden is updated, but not the name.

    So, is it a bug, or normal, or it happens only to me and that would means I missed something in my config perhaps …?

    Thx to help me :)

    Just to add my 2 cents,

    I’m using Eclipse as my IDE, and have had great luck with phpeclipse and subclipse. Because eclipse is java based it is cross platform, for the ide and plugins. I have used this setup on both a Ubuntu system and my Current Mac.

    I have 3 projects currently “checkout out” the Buddypress trunk, the WPMU trunk, and my private svn for personal development. This allows me to look at source code for everything. I only have submission permissions on my private svn, which is probably good.

    On my server I can also use the command line and checkout the files and copy them into the required directories.

    Hopefully this inspires someone,

    Brad

    Let me try and answer this diplomatically because this seems like spam without being spam to me…

    BuddyPress isn’t Facebook, and it really doesn’t have any intentions of trying to imitate it. That’s up to an audience of GPL contributors to try and mold and shape it into that, if they so choose.

    BuddyPress also has a test development site already, to flex its muscles and allow people to use it as they like. testbp.org.

    There are unlimited domains available, with unlimited hosting and bandwidth options. None of what you’re offering really has anything to do with BuddyPress other than using it for potential profit. Contributing a domain that specializes in spreading bad news isn’t any part of Automattic’s roadmap that I’ve seen, so don’t count on getting any hosting.

    If what you’re doing is offering a business opportunity to specific individuals, you should contact them privately and see if they’re interested.

    (I’m locking this for now. If any other staff feels like re-opening it for discussion, go for it. My gut tells me this isn’t what the forums here are for.)
