    Looking for the right solution…

We would like to create a social community site like facebook where members have profile pages and can post videos, pictures and such. Create and join groups and get push notifications for chosen content.

    2. MEMBERSHIP ENROLLMENT BUTTON:

    2. A randomized video playlist player
    3. A grid avatar list of our core contributors below these two players
    4. Tabs up top to navigate to members profiles, groups and more

if I do it on the User Screen through the Admin page it works fine…but my Users won’t have that option.

That tells you there is something happening on the front end.
I’ll bet it will work if you deactivate any ‘lazy’ loader plugin or code. ( jetpack ? )
And / or any ‘minify’ plugin or code that is affecting javascript.

I am using a theme now that is tested with BuddyPress

Sez who? The theme creators? Always check by momentarily switching to a WP theme like 2016.

@prashantvatsh in a quick check I see that Jetpack is likely the problem. I have turned off allowing WP users to login with another account. In the users list, there is a jetpack symbol that alerts me that a couple others in our group may have been logging in this way which means missing information in our membership directory that would have otherwise been collected at registration (ex. name). Thanks for your assistance and I hope this resolves it!

    Hi ! Prashant,

Heads off you man for forwarding me or suggesting me below article for my above mentioned problem.

    Article : Link

By reading of above articles one of answer “Hi It is all resolved now. Turns out the Jetpack lazy loading option was on and causing a mad headache.”

In above answer has the word “lazy loading” strike in my mind that in my Flatsome theme’s advanced options has lazy loading sub menu.

I already checked “LAZY LOAD IMAGES Enable lazy loading for images. Use with caution! Disable if you have plugin comp ability problems.” and for that my above problem came.

So, I just unchecked it and my problem solved.

    Thanks ! for your time.

I managed to fix this on my site. The issue I found was with the Jetpack settings. I turned off the lazy loading option for images and viola!

Yes. Resolved it. It was due to JetPack image lazy load conflict. Disabled it as of now, and image crop is working.

Thanks @vapvarun, I tried that before and it almost broke my site. I stopped the process and went back to my main theme. By then I had lost all of my Composer settings, so I’d rather not try that again.

The only thing I found that helps temporarily, is switching off Jetpack. Then at least the avatars in the footer widgets (such as who’s online) come back, but the avatars don’t reappear on the member pages. And as soon as I refresh a page, the footer widget avatars are gone again.

Future viewers. My problem recurred right after I wrote this. It appears that BP and Jetpack are incompatible and cannot work together. I have turned off Jetpack for this site though that is not desirable. If anyone has any words of wisdom I will take it.

Also, if there is a developer with time on your hands that wants to tackle this problem……I have a clean site that can be used as a playground if you want to do some testing. Let me know.

All right. Everything is working now. I did NOT refresh the domain as mentioned in a prior post. Here is what I did:

    1. From wp-admin, I deactivated Jet Pack plugin.

    2. Set plugin folder back to “BuddyPress” (we previously set it to use -old suffix).

    3. From wp-admin, reactivated BuddyPress

    4. Confirmed that BuddyPress DOES work.

    5. From wp-adminm, reactivated JetPack.

    6. Confirmed BuddyPress STILL works.

There seems to be some unknown defect/inconsistency between the BP and JetPack plugins.

Note that there are other threads in this forum about JetPack problems that indicate SSO needs to be turned off. In my case, it wasn’t on, so that doesn’t seem to be the same problem.

Hope this situation and resolution helps someone else.

    Best regards! CHUCK

@galador WordPress login is same as BuddyPress login; you can create a themed login page as well.

IF you are concern about WordPress.com login options, it might be possible you have enabled it inside Jetpack plugin setting, you can disable from Jetpack option https://jetpack.com/support/sso/

Yes so I got it to work, it just decided to randomly work when I showed my husband why I was so angry haha

I turned off every plugin, and went into jetpack debugging and turned it off completely and then swapped the theme back to 17, once I did that it saved. I was able to re-add all my other plugins and themes and they continued to work after that. Hopefully this helps anyone else with this problem. I dont know why it worked that time but it did.

    Ah, forgot to answer these:

    • WordPress ver. 4.9.4
    • BuddyPress ver. 2.9.3
    • Installation: Runs in main directory (public_html)
    • Upgraded from WordPress ver. — I’m going to guess 4.9.3?
    • Yep, WP was working fine. It still is, I just recovered it from a pretty bad PHP error. (disclaimer, I have NO idea how to PHP)
    • Upgraded from bbPress 2.9.2
    • Other Plugins: Akismet 4.0.3; bbpress 2.5.14; Blackhole for Bad Bots 1.8; Comment Mention Notifications 1.0.0; Custom Sidebars 3.1.2; Fancybox for WordPress 3.0.13; Jetpack 5.8; MailChimp 4.1.15; Maintenance 3.6.1; SiteOrigin Page Builder 2.6.2; Patreon for WordPress 2.6.2; Responsive Menu 3.1.13; Shortcodes Ultimate 5.0.3; SiteOrigin CSS 1.1.5; SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle 1.11.4; UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore 1.14.4; User Role Editor 4.4; WooCommerce 3.3.3; WooCommerce Services 1.11.0; WordPoints 2.4.1; WP Super Cache 1.5.9; Yoast SEO 6.3.1
    • Parent Theme: Rose
    • I’ve uploaded the Rose theme and made a child theme. I’ve also altered wp-config.php to allow Multisite functionality.
    • bbp-custom.php– I made one now! There are no functions.
    • Hosted through BlueHost.
    • Server OS: More than likely Linux (Apache).

Hi @jonowen2k, Seems like you have enabled jetpack single sign-on and it’s added a login with WordPress.com, you can skip it and login with regular WordPress login page. It’s that’s still confusing you can disable single sign-in from jetpack settings.

    Hi Mr. Boone 🙂

Yes, I tried to activate it and *hum* everything went weird on my website lol

O.K. so I guess I would need to study this theme child mystery or try with Jetpack’s Custom CSS module, or maybe drop the groups altogether and go with bbPress…

I will first try to save the groups. 🙂

Thank you so much for your help!

I should note that, if you are at all uncomfortable with building a child theme, then you should instead use Jetpack’s Custom CSS module (or a similar plugin). While building a child theme is pretty straightforward once you’re used to it, it can be intimidating at first and has the potential to break your site (temporarily!) if not implemented correctly.

    #269101

Thanks for the link. It does appear that the margin-top property is the culprit.

Here is the CSS that should fix it:

    body.single-item.groups #buddypress div#item-header #item-header-cover-image #item-header-content, body.single-item.groups #buddypress div#item-header #item-header-cover-image #item-actions {
        margin-top: 0px;
    }

I don’t recommend that you make the change directly to your themes/parabola/style.css stylesheet, as it will be overridden on the next update. I suggest building a child theme. But you could also use a custom CSS plugin, or the Custom CSS tools in Jetpack.

Hi @jeffm2008 – Thanks for the post!

I’ve just had a look at how Jetpack handles this. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s probably fundamentally incompatible with the way that BP’s top-level pages work. While BP does use WP’s page infrastructure in the Dashboard, it then tricks WP into thinking that BP pages are *not* in fact WP pages at the time that the sidebar is rendered. So Jetpack’s checks – technically, is_page() and get_the_ID() – are failing in the case of BP pages.

As an alternative, you might consider this plugin, which advertises support for BP content: https://wordpress.org/plugins/dynamic-widgets/
